8 fun ways to customize your Squidoo bio page

In August 2008 we launched a new version of the lensmaster profile or bio page. My goal was to make it more fun for you and your readers, to give you more ways to spotlight favorite lenses (yours or a friend's). And hey, a customized, personal, content-rich signpost online is never a bad idea for the search engines. When someone goes looking for you online, what do they find?

To get started, stop by the Profile tab on your dashboard and play around in the "More About Me" section.

There are a lot of new features in the bio page, and it's designed to be sort of a "grow as you go" bionic bio.

So I figured I'd throw together a lens to help you make the best of yours!

But first, see these great examples

lensmaster bios that know what's up

I'll start this off with some really cool lensmaster bio pages I've seen, and why I like them.
KAB
I love her lenses, and her bio page is no exception. Check out the "About Me" section. Neat way to call attention to some of your other lenses, and other signposts online (like Facebook, Twitter, your blog, etc).
Victoria Neely
As of today at least, Victoria hasn't used any of the new features (like "More about me" links and adding "Featured Lenses") but you know what? It doesn't matter! Because she's such an active lensmaster with so many lenses, favorites, and fans, her bio page is really interesting and robust as it is.
Janet21
See how Janet has a really short custom bio, which points you to a lens with loads more info? Smart way to chunk it up. Nice, Janet.
Adez7
Donna, Adez7, chooses to spotlight 5 of her best of-the-moment summer lenses. Smart to keep your featured lenses list timely and fresh.
Comfortdoc
No surprise, Comfortdoc is giving back to the community. Not only is she spotlighting a few of her own lenses on her bio page, she's also calling out a bunch of other great lenses for charity. Way to go, comfortdoc.

Now, 8 easy ways to rock your bio page

  1. Add some lenses to the "Check out these great lenses" section on your bio. (How? Just stop by the profile tab on your dashboard and look for the Featured Lenses section).
  2. Keep your featured lenses fresh. Switch them up often. Summertime? Surface your best beach lenses. Getting close to a holiday? Spruce up your older lenses and bring them back up top. You get the picture.
  3. Better yet, point to OTHER lensmasters' lenses on your bio page, too! Do your friends a favor and send them a little love. Wouldn't you like to get some in return?
  4. Make sure you've added a picture of you to your bio!
  5. Go here and fill in the blanks under "External links." Point to your blogs, your Twitter page, your Facebook page, whatever you like. Do as much or as little as you want! Empty spots don't show up on your bio, don't worry.
  6. Add lenses to the "Other favorite lenses" section. Pick and choose your favorite lenses that answer questions like the below. As many or as few as you want. Don't just point to your own lenses! Have some fun identifying yourself by what you love.
  7. Turn on your Favorites section. This lets people see the lenses you've favorited within Squidoo, right on your lensmaster bio page.
  8. Make lots of lenses. Your bio will automatically list them (except for your WIP lenses). It will grow as you go!

So, tell us...

What do you think of the new bio?

I don't care. At least it's better than it was before!

Solitudinarian says:

And I get to be the first in this column. Sad, aren't I. But the dashboards need an RSS feed that lets people subscribe to all your lenses, and that they can add to their web site for that little bit of extra publicity.

Dare I say, HubPages have such a feature. Come on, Megandoo, catch up.

It's cooler than ice cream. I also wish it included...

TheDailyBlonde says:

I'm a newbie here...but I did notice after I wrote my first lens it did NOT show up on my bio once published. Does thsi take awhile?

RuralRoute2 says:

I've found most of my favorites by browsing the bio pages of lensmasters.

ElizabethJeanAllen says:

It's great. When I stumble on a lens I like, I always go back and read the bio. A good bio is essential.

pokerspokesman says:

Hi, I like it. Now I have to do something with my own bio, good hints, thanks.

I think the new bio page layout is good as I am already checking back to see how many fans I have, just think it's missing something else, Although I can't put my finger on it

S-Ahsan says:

thanks for the great tips! rated 5

BethErickson says:

Wow, I can make use a lot of this info. Thanks!

Jewelsofawe says:

Love it!

rms says:

I love it! Can't wait to start playing with it!

KimGiancaterino says:

Looks great... I agree about having the ability to highlight groups too.

bcarter says:

I like most of the changes that were made. Especially the resizing of lensmaster photos in the followers section. I'm not a real fan of the bio section being moved below the fold, but for the most part I can get rid of the links I had there.

SemperFidelis says:

I love the new layout, however, I wish the fanclub links were dofollow!

aj2008 says:

Agree with the others that including Groups we manage and our Squidcasts would be great.

johndilbeck says:

I didn't like the change at first, but after looking into it more, I discovered how much better it is when compared to the older version.

I'd like to second the requests for our latest SquidCasts and a way to feature at least one of our groups.

Act on your dream!

kephrira says:

It is definitely much better, but I do agree with Jimmie that it would be great to include groups that you run on there somewhere.

Jimmie says:

I think it's fab! Looks so nice!

Request -- fully customizable links on the left side. I have other links I'd like to post there that don't fit into the options. (Fav forum, flickr stream, etc.)

Another request -- Show our groups or at least let us spotlight one of them in the left hand side links.

Rajays says:

I am loving it! Such a great improvement from the last layout. Like kab, I think adding the latest squidcast will be great.

badmsm says:

The new format gives us a chance to showcase more about ourselves, and give a plug to those deserving lenses that may not have gotten the attention they deserve.

The Master Squid rock, you know... :D

kab says:

I also wish it also included a few recent squidcasts.

Here are some screengrabs for you:

Look for the "More about Me" section on your dashboard "Profile" tab

This is my favorite part... surface your favorite lenses by answering some of these questions with a lens that matches them!

"External links" are your chance to show off your other signposts online, like your blogs, stores, Twitter profile, Facebook pag
