I am a stay at home mom. I am married to the most wonderful man, he is a US soldier. I have one child who is 7 and has Autism. Online, I call my son "Cutie" (for now) because I want to protect his privacy. We have talked about it and he likes the nickname because he is particularly proud of how cute he is- not just because he is physically attractive, but also because he has a Cute personality! He is a very outgoing, fun, energetic and funny kid who enjoys modeling and acting.

He always beams with pride when someone tells me "Oh, he is such a Cutie"!

If he ever requests another nickname, I will change all references to him to his new name! I also liked the idea of calling him a name that was obviously fake because I hate the idea of using a name that sounds real and having a reader believe that was really his name- that would be misleading. I like to be honest about the fact that you are NOT hearing his real name.

When his communication skills and social skills mature enough that he can truly understand writing online, he will be given the option to use his real name, but at 7 years old, I do not feel that he is mature enough to make that type of decision.

I used to work as an EMTS providing emergency medical care in a large city, I also used to provide rehab for adults with brain injuries. When my son was born I "took a year off", and when he got the diagnosis I became so involved with Autism, I never went back to work!

I spend my spare time studying genetics and hope to be a molecular biologist someday (many years from now). Currently I am trying to help families of young children with autism by helping them navigate the system (which can be extremely challenging) and by offering free printables and finding low cost products that help when raising a small child who has a developmental disorder. I also have several articles dedicated to therapeutic activities that are frequently used as "homework" or supplements to professional therapies which you may find helpful if you are looking to do more than you already are or have been wait listed.

Many of the parents of small children with autism who I work with have become so overwhelmed and afraid because of the child's diagnosis that they forget to enjoy spending time with the child. Many of the kids are forgotten by their own families or they are kept indoors in their room all day because the parents are simply terrified to take them anywhere. The child may not be able to progress in that type of situation because they are not being exposed to any new experiences.

I try to help the parents understand that the whole family can still enjoy a normal life and walk them through some basic steps on how to handle the situations that frighten them the most-the goal is to bring normalcy to these children's lives by helping the parents understand that there is a wonderful child in there, they have a label, and that label really does not matter.
