Hello neighbor. I started Optometry West in 1981 when unemployment in Muskegon was 20% and bank loan interest rates were 20%. We have survived and thrived in the face of constant advertising by optical chains and short-lived  competitors  by offering great service and receiving word of mouth referrals from patients like you.

I first attended  Michigan State University and transferred to The Ohio State University for their 4 year professional Optometry program, graduating in 1976. I honed my clinical and business skills working for a relative (Dr. Orley Jensen) in his practice in Madison, Wisconsin for 3 years. I moved to Muskegon to buy a private practice after a handshake agreement but the owner sold it to someone else as I moved to Muskegon.

I scrambled and found an opening at a "non profit" Co-operative vision care office set up to sponsor a credit union. Their gimmick was the cheapest eye exam in the country ($12) to support high paid union opticians making glasses from my prescriptions. My reward for taking time to care correctly for patients  was a 30% lower salary than the other doc's who humped the patients through quickly due to a piecework pay system.
