Explaining Squidoo Lensrank Experiment

Squidoo is one of the most exciting ways to earn money online, but if you really want to be a successful Squidoo lensmaster (or lensmistress), there are a few things that must be done.

Although some claim that Squidoo is easy and a lens can be together in 5 minutes, others brag about how much money they've made on Squidoo and give out some helpful lensmastering techniques, but I have just had a better idea:

How about following my Squidoo Lensrank Experiment in which I will apply the tips I have learned in my time on Squidoo, but the difference being that I will explain everything I do on this lens to increase its lensrank and bring more traffic to it?

I have applied some of the Squidoo tips I know of in my other 8 lenses but since I never wrote down what I was doing, I might have skipped a few. This will not be the case here and even though this experiment might fail miserably, if you see it one day in the top 100 lenses, you will know that I am on to something good and I will have provided you with a step-by-step guide on how to create a popular Squidoo lens.

If you find this lens helpful, don't forget to rate it or submit to your favourite bookmarking sites!

Squidoo Lensrank Experiment Step 1: Creating a New Lens

Topic, content, tagging and keywords

Pick a popular topic
For this lens I have picked a topic that should be popular with other Squidoo lensmasters as it deals with something all lensmasters want to achieve: getting a good Squidoo Lensrank.
My ultimate goal for this lens is for it to become a reference for many Squidoo Lensmasters so I will try to make it as helpful as possible.

Tagging
If you would like to know everything there is to know about tagging a lens, I recommend heading over to Squidoo Tagging Tricks (but only after reading and rating this lens).
I have changed my primary tag from Squidoo Lensrank Experiment to Squidoo Lensrank as the advice on Squidutils is not to use the same phrases for both. You can see the rest of my tags on the right column of my lens (check my related topics).

Keywords
I am using my main tags as keywords; I don't have any scientific advice on which keywords to use but one thing I am doing from time to time is going to my lensmaster dashboard and checking my stats where i can find which keywords were used by Google searchers to find my lens. I make mure to add these in my tags and I try to use them a bit more but only if they are relevant. I also use bold characters to emphasize some of my keywords (kind of like giving Google a shout).

Squidoo Lensrank Experiment Step 2: Adding Modules

Squidoo Modules for my Lensrank Experiment

This is an important step as Squidoo modules are the foundations of lenses; this is where I include my content but also where I try to add a bit of colour and variety to my lens.

1-Introduction Module
This was already there when I created my brand new lens; I am using it to explain what the Squidoo Lensrank Experiment is all about. I have including some of my tags/keywords (some of them in bold characters) and include a picture. To make this particular picture I visited Squidoo: Buttons and Banners, picked an icon I liked and edited it with Microsoft Office Paint. I used one of my lens' keywords to save it on my computer to make this webpage slightly more SEO (Search Engine Optimization) friendly.

2- Text/Write Modules
This is where I like to include the bulk of my content; I am tring to keep separate text modules for each new idea and whenever I can, I add a touch of colour with a photo or clipart, which I also save on my computer using a related keyword before uploading it to my lens.

3- Affiliate Modules
Rumor has is on Squidoo that lenses containing affiliate modules do better in lensrank; I don't know if this is true (maybe it it once people satrt buying from your affiliate modules) but I'll give it a try. So far I have added the following affiliate modules containing products related to Squidoo:
- a CafePress module (I don't have a CafePress account but I can still promote some Squidoo products);
- two Amazon modules;
- one Amazon Spotlight module which I am rather proud of as I found a really cool Seth Godin Marketing Guru action figure.

4- The Most Important Thing module
That big orange box adds a bit of colour to my lens and contains my most important advice.

5- Sticky Notes
I like these as they are a bit brighter than the rest and I like to use them to stress a few points that I have already mentioned (for those of you who haven't been paying attention to what I've been saying!).

6- Blackbox module
I already used one most important module; there's nothing to stop me adding another one but I thought I'd try out a new one for a change.

7- Google Blog Search
I am using Squidoo as my keyword to find blog posts related to Squidoo to display in this module. This should be updated everyday and make my lens look fresh to Google, while at the same time use some of my lens' keywords.

8- Guestbook
How will I know who visits my lens and what my visitors think about it without it? I always include guestbooks in all my lenses and I try and find time everyday to pay a visit to anyone who leaves me a comment (hint, hint!).

9- Poll
Another way to make my visitors participate to my lens; I have decided to create a poll to estimate how much you like (or dislike) this lens, and also inculded a little reminder to rate, favorite, lensroll and bookmark my lens (another hint!).

10- Links Voting Plexo
I still have to update this one, but when I am done it will contain all the links I have find useful for creating and promoting a Squidoo lens.

11- Text Voting Plexo
I guess you could compare this one as a "to do" list. Print it each time you are making a lens and cross the items as you perform the corresponding actions. A good one to stick on the wall beside your computer.

Note 1:
There are lots of other modules to choose from; if you don't have time to go and try them all out, I recommend Cute Modules to Spice up Your Lens; this is where I have discovered new modules I wouldn't have bothered trying out otherwise.

Note 2:

Squidoo Lensrank Experiment Step 3: Getting Traffic Through Social Media

Promotion Through Social Bookmarking Websites and Lens Directories

Promoting Squidoo Lenses
Even if a lens is outstanding, nobody will visit it if you don't do a bit of promotion; this is time-consuming but necessary if you want to get a bit of traffic. I have included lens directories in this module about social media because I find that sometimes there is a very fine line between these two categories (sometimes no line at all); some lens directories I've submitted my Squidoo Lensrank Experiment to are very similar to Digg, which is a social bookmarking website.

Social Media
I have submitted this Lens to a few social media sites; there are hundreds of social bookmarking and networking websites out there, but I really don't think it's necessary to go crazy and submit to all the sites I am aware of because, even if I managed somehow to submit this Squidoo Lensrank Experiment to all of them, I would need to be a superhuman (Supersquid?) to be able to spend time on every single one of them promoting my lens.

If you decide to follow my advice, submit your lens to all the social media websites you are already a member of; if you are completely new to social media sites, I suggest you become a member first of one site first, and once you get familiar with the way it functions, work your way up to a few more.

In my case, I submitted the Squidoo Lensrank Experiment to:
StumbleUpon,
Digg,
Reddit,
Del.icio.us,
Mixx,
Facebook,
Yahoo Search.

If you want to make this process easier, you can purchase an automatic social bookmarking tool or use a free manual social bookmarking service like Socializer or Social Marker, a fast and easy to use free automatic social bookmarking tool that lets you bookmark links to up to 49 of the best social media websites (this has become my new best friend).

Update: I have since used Socialmarker to submit my lens to another 15 social bookmarking sites.

As I am a blogger as well as being a Squidoo lensmaster, I wrote a nice little blog post about Squidoo Lensrank Experiment and I Stumbled it.

Lens Directories
I have added my lens to the following lens directories:
Lensroll,
Isle of Squid,
Lensmasterworld,
Squidoo Kingdom (or Squidom),
Stumpedia,
Squiddit,
Squoogle is not accepting new links at this time due to a website update so but I will submit my link there as soon as the submission process reopens,
Squidoo Directory - The SquiDirectory is a
directory of selected Squidoo Lenses featuring, helpful information about a full spectrum of interesting topics;
Squidpoint also shares Adsense revenue so if you have an Adsense account, you can enter your Adsense publisher ID get paid for 50% of the ads displayed on your pages (not compulsory).

Submission to Social Media and Lens Directories Follow-up
After submitting my lens, I made a point of spending a little time on each site and if I found any links I liked, I voted them up (or Stumbled, Digged...). Submission alone won't get you very far(especially if you are submitting a lens to a nofollow site) but if you vote some items up on the sites you belong to, you are more likely to become popular and having your own links clicked on. My only problem with these websites is that there are only 24 hours in a day and I can't spend too much on these social websites so I try to focus a bit more on the ones I like best.

Note:
If you haven't already done so, rate, lensroll, favorite or bookmark (or all of the above) Squidoo Lensrank Experiment so you can come back and learn even more from it.

Very Important:

Promoting your lens is crucial to its success, but remember the following:

1-Do NOT use Traffic Exchanges to get traffic to your lens (do you really want your visitors to be bored surfers forced to stay 30 seconds staring at your lens so they can get PTC referrals?). This is against Adsense's TOS and it may help Squidoo's site get banned!

2-Don't spam (do I really need to mention this?).

Kindle is the new wireless e-book reading device from Amazon, a must-have gadget if you love reading but are on the move a lot and don't want to bring all your books when traveling.

Squidoo Lensrank Experiment Step 4: Getting Traffic Through Squidoo

Sharing the Love with the Squidoo Community; SquidU, Groups, etc.

The Squidoo Forum: SquidU
I really advise any lensmaster to join this forum (there is no sign-up, just login with your existing Squidoo username and password). Add your lens' url to your signature and try and make a few posts there everyday; believe me, it works! I always notice an increase in traffic to my lenses when I am active on this forum and it takes just a few minutes everyday to post just 2 or 3 messages on SquidU; you can also use the forum to find new lenses to rate and comment on.

Give and you will receive on Squidoo
The community on Squidoo is very active and it helps a lot to rate, lensroll, favorite and comment on other Squidoo lenses. I have found that nearly every time I leave a comment on someone else's lens I get a comment on at least one of my lenses from that lensmaster, so when people leave comments on my lenses I like to return the favour by rating and commenting on their lenses too (well at least one!).

Squidoo Groups
Anytime you join a Squidoo Group you add a link to your lens on that group's page, so joining groups is a bit like adding a blog to a blog directory. Some groups get more traffic than others so I recommend joining as many groups as you can.
The first group I've added the Squidoo Lensrank Experiment to was CraigList@Squidoo Group which I have found through the forum and the groupmaster decided to feature my lens as one of the group's Lenses of the week, so I figured it would be worth mentioning it but I've joined over 30 Squidoo Groups since; I already had other lenses in some of these groups so it was easy enough for me to find them but if you are starting out I recommend going to your Squidoo dashboard and click the "My Groups" tab and start joining some of the "Most Active Groups". Only join the Squidoo groups that accept all lenses and the ones that are related to your lens' topic if you don't want to be kicked out of a group. You can see all the groups the Squidoo Lensrank Experiment belongs to in the right column of this lens.

You can also start you own group if you like; I am not a groupmaster at the moment but I am sure that creating a new Squidoo group cannot hurt your lensrank.

Squidoo Groups Outside Squidoo
Since I am also a member of BlogCatalog (they are the best Blog Directory I know but you need a blog to join them), I decided to also join the only 2 groups there about Squidoo; the BlogCatalog Squidoo discussion boards are not very active, but I participated in 2 threads there.

I was on a roll with joining groups so I checked if there were groups related to Squidoo on Stumble Upon and I found one which I also joined and made a few posts there.

There are also groups dedicated to Squidoo on Facebook and Mixx so I have also joined some. I am not sure whether I'll ever find time to participate to all of these groups, but I'll try anyway.

Squidcasts
I noticed that this lens is being added as a favorite by a good few people and since I am displaying the Squidoo fan widget, I have gained new fans (thanks to everyone) so now that my Squidoo Experiment is nearly finished (I still plan on updating this lens but the main tips are here now), I have sent a Squidcast to my fans to let them know my lens was completed; I just hope they'll check their messages (I am guilty of forgetting to do this quite often myself but don't tell anyone!).

Angel Blessings
If you're lucky enough and you have a good quality lens, a SquidAngel might give it a blessing! I got my first lens blessing on September 20th and my lensrank improved a good bit just then; you will see the comment left by the SquidAngel who blessed my lens if you scroll down to the Guestbook. Thank you Susan!

SquidU Forum

Participate regularly in SquidU, the official Squidoo forum and add your lens' url to your signature; you don't need to sign up, just use your current Squidoo username and password.
This will bring you a few visitors each day.

Squidoo Lensrank Experiment: My First Traffic Analysis

Examining Squidoo Lensrank Experiment's Traffic Sources

I checked my stats a week after publishing my Squidoo Lensrank Experiment and found out that out of 101 visitors:
- 60 came from StumbleUpon,
- 10 came from Squidoo,
- 9 came from SquidU,
- 4 came from Squidom (Squid Kingdom),
- 4 came from my blog Smart ways to Earn Money Online,
- 1 came from Google,
- 1 came from Facebook and
- 1 came from an IP address (I guess my lens must have been emailed once).

It seems that Squidoo counts direct visitors (the ones coming from Squidoo) and search engine visitors twice, as my traffic coming from referrals is 90 (and Squidoo includes direct traffic and Google traffic in there!), my direct traffic is 10 and my Google traffic is 1; the 90 referrals added to direct and Goggle traffic adds up to 101 visitors (go figure! I must post something on the forum about this).

As you can see, my biggest source of traffic so far is StumbleUpon; this is due to the fact that I have been spending about half an hour most days stumbling other sites. StumbleUpon can bring you visitors but you must work with it; just submitting your lens and forgetting about this social bookmarking website doesn't bring you any visitors and this surge of traffic usually only happens right after submitting a new link.

As for my other sources of traffic: I have been commenting on other lenses (also rated, lensrolled and favorited lenses) and I guess this is where I get my 10 Squidoo visitors; participating on SquidU (between 2 and 5 posts a day) brought me 9 visitors and I did rate a few lenses on Squidom.

I haven't submitted my lens' url to Google and don't feel a need to because when you submit a url to Google, it only lists the website's homepage (Squidoo.com is already indexed). It looks like the search engine spiders did the rest and already found my lens' url, as one visitor came from Google, even though I couldn't find my lens when I entered the keyword that person used to find my lens (I am not going to lose sleep over this, just happy to see that Squidoo Lensrank Experiment is indexed in Google!).

I know 101 visitors in 7 days is not very much compared to what some lensmasters get, but I still made a lensrank of 1910 in my first week ($$$$!).

Squidoo Lensrank Experiment Step 5: Lens Health-Check

Squidutils and Lens Heath-Check

Doing the Squidoo Lensrank Experiment Lens Health-Check at Squidutils
I found a link that should be useful for all lensmasters. Go and take a look at Squidutils if you haven't already; I did and found a cool feature that let me do a lens health-check and I discovered that I needed to change my primary tag and that I need to get more backlinks.

Selecting the Right Primary Tag
We'll see about the backlinks later but the primary tag is something I wasn't too clear about; apparently it is not a good idea to keep your lens' url as primary tag and Squidutils directed me to one of their blog posts in which they explain why: read How to Pick your Primary Tags for more information.

After submitting my Squidoo Lensrank Experiment to the Lens Health-Check I changed my primary tag; I also added that same tag to my secondary tags (yes, that's my primary tag duplicated) and also added my ex-primary tag to my secondary tags.

Lens Health-Check from Squidutils

If you are not sure whether your lens is up to snuff, head over to Squidutils and run a lens health-check.
This can really help you as you will get advice on how to improve the health of your Squidoo lens and get more visitors to it from the search engines.

Squidoo Lensrank Experiment Step 6: Getting Traffic Through Search Engines

Using RSS Feeds to Get Incoming Links

How to get Incoming Links to a Lens
I have already started building backlinks with Social Media sites and Lens Directories; some of these are NoFollow, which means that adding my lens to them helps me getting visitors that find my lens and access it through these sites, but it's not doing much for me SEO-wise (it doesn't help Search Engines find my lens).

How to get even more Incoming Links (Backlinks)
Building backlinks will help Squidoo Lensrank Experiment get found by search engines, thus bringing more visitors to my lens and one way to do this for free is to use RSS. I am not going to give you a lesson on RSS Syndication as there are others more qualified than me on Squidoo who can do this; check out the following lens that should help you understand more about RSS Feeds (it certainly helped me!):

My Daily Squidoo "Chores"

I am calling them chores but the reality is that I am enjoying this!

Squidoo is all about community (well a lot of it is) and I keep commenting on lenses, rating, favoriting, lensrolling and visiting the forum even when I don't work on my lenses.

Squidoo Lensrank Experiment Step 7: Article Marketing

Article Marketing to Promote my Squidoo Lensrank Experiment Lens

Why write articles?
I know that writing full articles may seem a bit daunting but you don't need to write like Shakespeare to get your articles published; if your articles have a minimum of 400 or 500 words, are easy to understand and don't sound like advertisements, they are likely to be accepted in the directories. If I can do it, so can you! I am working on getting backlinks to this lens to give it a bit of authority so that people can find my lens by searching Google and not only through the social media I have submitted my lens to.

Build backlinks to get traffic for your Squidoo lens
An effective way to Build backlinks is by using article marketing, so I wrote a few articles related to Squidoo and how to get a good lensrank; so far I have only submitted one article to 10 free article directories but I am hoping to keep doing this over the next few weeks. In the meantime, I can afford to show off a little as I have earned the status of Expert Author on Ezine articles:

Sophie Le Cuiche, EzineArticles.com Basic Author

How article directories work
Submitting articles to article directories is a good way to obtain quality backlinks and more exposure as even though most directories don't allow links in the submitted articles, there is alway a resource box you can fill with details of a website, blog or in my case Squidoo lens; I will keep submitting to the directories that allow content already published elsewhere (there is no way I am writing a different article for each!) and that allow other webmasters to republish my articles on the condition that my resource box is included (with links working); I know a few people fear of being penalized by Google for duplicate content but a few extra backlinks can't hurt and the content on my Squidoo lens is unique.

Article Directories
If you are interested in trying out this method to promote your lens, I have Stumbled Upon (litterally!) a list of article directories that gets updated every week and includes the Google PageRank and Alexa ranking of each. Check it out here.

Note:
The best lensrank achieved so far was 522 on September 28th.
