Leona Lewis ~ Rising Spirit

X-Factor winner Leona Lewis: Leona Lewis' striking beauty, charmingly down-to-earth personality, and huge, soaring voice has taken over the UK, where her debut Spirit entered the album chart at Number One and became Britain's fastest-selling debut of all time. Spirit's lead-off single "Bleeding Love" sold over 1 million copies in the UK in just five weeks.

Ushering in 2008, Leona received four prestigious Brit Award nominations, the UK equivalent of the Grammy Awards and won an Ivor Novello Award and the Record of the Year Award.

She has now received huge accolades in the US (and worldwide), where she has successfully conquered the American and international charts with her first single releases.

Leona Lewis Biography

The Leona Lewis Story So Far

Leona Lewis was born in Islington, London on 3 April 1985 to Joe and Maria. She is the middle child of three, with two brothers, Kyle and Bradley. They grew up in North London. Lewis wrote her first song at the age of 12, and at the age of 13, she won the Lady D under-18 talent show at the Hackney Empire. She attended the Sylvia Young Stage School and the Brit Academy.

Although her big passion is singing, she is also a keen dancer and actor. Before auditioning for "The X Factor", Lewis recorded an album of her own songs called Twilight, but the album was never released. Leona now lives in Hackney, where she previously worked as a receptionist.

The X-Factor

In 2006, she auditioned for the third series of "The X Factor", singing "Over the Rainbow". On the 9 December show, Simon Cowell remarked that of all the past Pop Idol, American Idol and The X Factor performances, her performance of "Over the Rainbow" was the best he had ever witnessed. Cowell also commented throughout the show that Lewis' lack of awareness as to how good she is, is what makes her special.

She made it through to the final stages and was announced the winner on 16 December 2006, winning a 1 million recording contract. She was mentored by Simon Cowell.

During the show, her vocal talents were consistently given high praise by all three judges (Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh and Sharon Osbourne), and on occasions were compared with Mariah Carey, Celine Dion and Whitney Houston.

All three judges also commented on how the British music industry needed a singer like her, and that her performances were world class. Louis Walsh remarked that her performance of "I Will Always Love You" was as good as the Whitney Houston version.

On the night of the Grand Final, Lewis won 60% of the 8,000,000+ votes cast.

Lewis describes the album's style as "classic songs with a contemporary edge," containing R&B and "fresh pop" styles, ballads and "soulful up-tempo numbers". It has an American style, with some electronic 1980s sounds.

However, the songs are not beat-driven or following the latest trends, but are songs that can be performed acoustically.

Simon Cowell has commented that the album is as good as early Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston.

Leona Lewis - Footprints in the Sand

This song was released in March 2008 as Lewis's third UK single and as the official song of the charity Sport Relief for 2008, with proceeds going to the charity.

"Footprints in the Sand" is an adaptation of the Christian poem "Footprints", and Simon Cowell came up with the idea to base a song around the poem, and Lewis agreed.

Lewis describes the song as "very moving, with a very emotional lyric" as it is about "standing by someone and being there for people who need your help."

It entered the UK Singles Chart at number one, where it stayed for seven weeks. On 16 December 2007, "Bleeding Love" won The Record of the Year 2007 award.

In February 2008, Lewis broke the major American charts as the song entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number 85. It eventually peaked at No.1, Lewis thus becoming the first UK female to hit Number One since Kim Wilde, who achieved this feat in the 1980's. Lewis now joins Petula Clark, Lulu, Sheena Easton and Kim Wilde as the only other British women to get a Number One hit in America.
