The Value of Introducing Famous Artists To Children

I think there is value in teaching children to appreciate art. Often art is a doorway to the historical period in which it was made. So by studying famous artists of different times, the children gain insight into the times they are studying.

It teaches children to think more openly and more creatively by introducing them to the creativity of others.

20 Reasons Why Art Is Important for Children has a wonderful list of values that art offers.

If you are interested in homeschooling or the Charlotte Mason approach to homeschooling, you might be interested to find out that Charlotte Mason felt that children should be exposed to art in their studies "In order that children may be put in touch with the contribution that each famous artist has made to the world's store of all that is beautiful and worthwhile."--from Art Appreciation the Charlotte Mason Way website.

Be an Inventor like da Vinci is an idea from my blog. After much agonizing, I came up with the idea of giving the children many craft items and telling them to be an inventor like da Vinci was in all his notebooks. It was really successful for my co-op class.

If you are working with kids about da Vinci, wouldn't it be a great idea to get a good paper airplane book? And then make some of them and fly them.? It would flow quite nicely with his love of flight and his creative inventions concerning flight.
