Mona Lisa

Leonardo most famous painting

Mona LisaHis most famous piece is definitely the Mona Lisa (La Gioconda) that was painted in the year 1504. The painting is that of a seated woman said to be Lisa Del Giocondo.

This is a painting that has through the years continually fascinated art enthusiasts because of the ambiguity of Lisa's expression and the atmospheric illusionism surrounding it. Leonardo is said to have worked on the painting for three years where he moved from Italy and finished it in France where he had been invited by the then king.

The painting can now be seen in Louvre in Paris, France.

Last supper

Painting of the biblical last supper

Last supperAnother example of his many paintings is Last supper, a painting of the biblical last supper, where Jesus Christ had announced that one of his disciples would betray him. It signifies the exact moment Jesus made the announcement by showing different reactions from his disciples.

There have been many interpretations of the painting over the years but the most famous is the use of the number three. Christians believe Leonardo tried to signify the holy trinity by placing the disciples in groups of three and drawing three windows.

Saint Anne with Virgin Mary and Jesus

The Virgin and Child with St. AnneHe also painted the Saint Anne with her daughter Virgin Mary and bay Jesus trying to hold a sacrificial lamb. It is said that Christ is grappling with the lamb to symbolize passion, while his mother Mary tries to restrain him.

Very interesting on this painting is, that Virgin Mary is actualy sitting in st. Annes lap. Another intersting fact is also, that there are three different sketches on the back of the painting. One is horse head, second one is depiction of half a skull and third is a small boy playing with lamb, very similar to Jesus and lamb on the front page.

This painting can also be seen in Louvre in Paris, France.

Holy Infants Embracing

Holy Infants EmbracingAnother example of Leonardo's great paintings is one referred to as Holy Infants Embracing. It is believed to represent Jesus Christ as a baby embracing his baby cousin John the Baptist.

This painitng is related to other Leonardo work, The Virgin of the rocks. The painting was not recognised as his work and was only known as 2a very fine work".

The Virgin on The Rocks

The Virgin on The RocksHoly infants embracing is a painting that is closely connected to another piece of Leonardo da Vinci, known as The Virgin on The Rocks. It is a painting that depicts baby John praying to baby Jesus who is blessing him while seated with angel Gabriel. It also shows Madonna ushering John towards Jesus.

On this painiting Leonardo used technik sfumato (from italian word sfumare - to evaporate like smoke). It shows a very fine shading and transitions from light to dark.

There are two, almost identical Leonardos paintings. One is in National gallery in London while another is in Louvre, Paris.
