Mikhail Lermontov
In 1837 he was sent into exile in the Caucasus for writing a poem on the death of Pushkin. After being reinstated, he was exiled again in 1840 -- for participating in a duel with the son of the French ambassador.
Lermontov was inspired by the wild beauty of the scenery in the Caucasus to write romantic poems such as The Novice and The Demon. These poems also reveal the influence of Lord Byron. He also wrote the poem, The Song of the Merchant Kalashnikov under the influence of Russian folklore, and a verse play titled Masquerade
His short novel, A Hero of our Time, written in 1840, was a masterpiece. It is an example of the superfluous man novel and again shows the influence of Lord Byron and of the wild beauty of the Caucasus.
Lermontov was killed during another duel at the early age of just 27.

A masterpiece of Russian prose, Lermontov's only novel was influential for many later 19th century authors, including Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky, and Chekhov. Lermotov's hero, Pechorin, is a dangerous man, Byronic in his wasted gifts and his cynicism, and desperate for any kind of action that will stave off boredom. In five linked episodes, Lermontov builds up a portrait of a man caught in and expressing the sickness of his times.

After all this, is life worth the trouble?
"And tomorrow, it may be, I shall die!... And there will not be left on earth one being who has understood me completely. Some will consider me worse, others, better, than I have been in reality... Some will say: 'he was a good fellow'; others: 'a villain.' And both epithets will be false. After all this, is life worth the trouble? And yet we live - out of curiosity! We expect something new... How absurd, and yet how vexatious!"
