World War One History Books - By Les Carlyon
I first heard about Les Carlyon when I was given a book called Gallipoli by my wife as a gift. Since moving to Australia I have become very interested in the Australian Armed Forces, and in particular the ANZAC's (The Australian and New Zealand Army Corps).
As soon as started reading, I knew this author was different to anyone I had read before. Here I was reading a factual war history book, and I couldn't put it down!!
Les Carlyon writes, whether intentional or not, like he was writing a novel. The book contain lots of dates, figures etc but you can read it so easily and fluently. I would recommend both of the books I will highlight on this lens as essential reading if you are studying Australia in World War 1 or just have an interest in the subject.

Gallipoli
Gallipoli by Les Carlyon (published 2001)
543 pages telling the story of the ANZACs at war from the initial landings on the Gallipoli Peninsula, through to the evacuation.
The book tells the story of the ANZACsfirst foray into battle, of their high command, of their heroics. It also includes maps, photographs, casualty figures.
Yet all along it reads like a novel. It is hard to believe to read this account of this ill-fated 'adventure' that it did actually take place.
But on April 25th 1915, the Australian and New Zealand Corps went ashore and into the war.
And into History....
This... is their story

The Great War
The Great War by Les Carlyon (published 2006)
777 pages telling how the ANZACs went from home to Gallipoli, and onto the Western front of France and Belgium.
As well written, and in the same style as "Gallipoli", The Great War again documents maps, casualty figures, heroics, and photographs.
It tells how the Australians were thought of by the British, and how the distinguished themselves in battle.
This is the story of how Australia lost a generation of men, to a war on the other side of the world.
Included is the account of the Battle of Messines, and Messines Ridge, a major part of ANZAC WWI history
