A list of good lesbian comic books and graphic novels

This is a guide to the best lesbian comics and graphic novels, in print and online. They may be hard to find, but they do exist. Yes - there are actually a few good lesbian graphic novels and rather more webcomics to be found - while most are self-published, lesbian main characters are even creeping into mainstream comics!

There are rather a lot more webcomics, because they are easier for the artist to publish online, but some of the best webcomics are also making into print now, so I've grouped them just below the mainstream and indie graphic novels.

Anime and Manga are covered on their own page - the 'Yuri' page, as they offer a slightly different genre to western graphic novels. And lesbian webcomics are here

  • I'm having to move a lot of content to this page in a hurry so excuse the mess, I do intend to add a lot more about *why* this books are worth reading, as well as a few more titles!

  • Mildly NSFW content will come with a warning, and completely NSFW content won't be listed on this page (according to the rules of Squidoo, as I prefer not getting my pages taken down!).

Batwoman: Elegy is a dramatic and content filled back story to Batwoman that's well worth the read. This is a well drawn, and very well written story that does a very good job of introducing the 'new' Batwoman. Splashed out in vivid red, black and white she goes hunting for a peculiar villain who (of course) has ties to her past, and a cult that wants her dead.

This version of Batwoman has strong parallels to Batman - murdered family, playgirl lifestyle, and desperate for a cause. And Gotham - protecting the innocent - has become her cause. She's honest and upfront, and never hides her sexuality - this is definitely a real lesbian heroine!

The ...overreaction to a mainstream lesbian hero caused DC Comics to sideline it's future plans for Batwoman to be as mainstream as they'd planned. Vote with your credit card and persuade them that Batwoman is worth keeping.

    Renee Montoya

Also written by Greg Rucka, two lesbian heroines from DC Comics

fan art Batwoman's coming out by *nana-51 lesbian comicRenee Montoya started out as a cop, and a good one, on the grim streets of Gotham. Outed by Two Face as gay, she kept right on doing her job. Eventually she quit in disgust, and was recruited by The Question, and eventually replaced him.

Along the way, she dated DC Comic's other main lesbian character - the gorgeous redhead, Kate Kane a.k.a. Batwoman. Both appear together and separately in several books as main characters.

Scandal Savage in the Secret Six

From DC Comics, Written by Gail Simone

Scandal Savage and her Lamentation BladesAwards
    • Outstanding Comic Book nominee, 20th & 21st GLAAD media awards 2009 & 2010
The Secret Six are a team of villains from DC Comics, written by Gail Simone. One of the central characters is Scandal Savage, created by author Gail Simone and artist Dale Eaglesham and a confirmed lesbian Supervillain. Scandal is tough, smart and the daughter of immortal villain Vandal Savage.

The Secret Six first appeared in two cross-over series (2005-6) ( facing off against Lex Luthor in some villainous infighting in Villains United (Countdown to Infinite Crisis) and acting as the antagonists to the Birds of Prey (Oracle, Black Canary, Huntress and Lady Blackhawk) in their final volume Birds of Prey Vol. 7: Dead of Winter).

They got their own series in September 2008, starting with Secret Six: Six Degrees of Devastation.

    Strangers in Paradise

    by Terry Moore

    Strangers in Paradise Omnibus

This series was drawn, written and self-published by Terry Moore and is one of my favourite graphic novel series.

Strangers in Paradise won the GLAAD Outstanding Comic Book award in 2008 and was a Nominee in 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006/

Originally published in over eighty comic issues, you can buy Strangers in Paradise in 19 individual books, several hardbacks, six small pocketbooks, or this enormous omnibus.
The pocketbooks are the cheapest way to collect the series, but are very small and don't include the original art covers. The limited edition omnibus is probably the nicest, includes all the original issues and has been thoroughly edited and revised by Terry Moore. There are two books in the omnibus, and it comes signed by Terry Moore, as well as having an extra gallery of art and a few other nice touches.

I find indie / self-publishing to have less restraints and be truer to the author's real intent, views, vision, etc.

      Hey!
Lets not forget Sarah Rainmaker in Gen 13 and Poison Ivy/Harley Quinn in DC!
Though I guess Harley would be classified as Bi because of her love for "Mr.J".

    DC Comic's Greatest Lesbian Character
Read about how Renee Montoya began in this gritty Gotham cop-drama comic

Renee Montoya is one of the first real, and really good, lesbian character to take centre stage in mainstream comics. Published by DC Comics, Gotham Central is award-winning and well worth reading.

Gotham Central follows Renee as she works in the Gotham city police department, before she later becomes The Question.

One of the first, longest running, and all around best graphic novel series that focuses on a lesbian main character (plus the girl she's in love with, and another guy - who she also loves), Strangers in Paradise is one of the best series I have ever read. And that is high praise from me.
