Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Reading Lists for the Queer Book Lover

Sometimes it's difficult to find just the right book that speaks to your soul. As a lesbian and as a book lover, I often seek out great books that speak to me on a more personal level; in other words, books that really "get" the gay side of me. I write a blog and I maintain a website about the LGBT related books that I've found and enjoyed. On this lens, I'll be presenting the cream of the non-fiction books that I've read and reviewed in nice, neat category lists without all of my blog commentary.

PLEASE NOTE: My other lenses include ones specifically focused on gay fiction, lesbian fiction, LGBT Fantasy/Sci-Fi and queer teen fiction plus two (a lesbian focused one and a gay focused one) on fiction specifically for the Amazon Kindle. Please visit those if you're looking for fiction recommendations.

Lesbian Non-Fiction

Some works of non-fiction just aren't easily categorized as biography or self-help or history, etc. For that reason, I'm including the broader category here of "Lesbian Non-Fiction" to have a place to include the books I've reviewed for my blog that I think contain valuable information for all of the lesbians perusing this suggested reading list.

Butch is a Noun by S. Bear Bergman

Female Masculinity by Judith Halberstam.

A Woman Like That: Lesbian And Bisexual Writers Tell Their Coming Out Stories edited by Joan Larkin.

100 Lesbians Walk Into A Bar...: Real lesbians. Real questions. Real answers. by Emily Wilcox.

She Wanted It All: A True Story of Sex, Murder, and a Texas Millionaire by Kathryn Casey.

Secret Service: Untold Stories of Lesbians in the Military by Zsa Zsa Gershick.

Band of Sisters: American Women at War in Iraq by Kirsten Holmstedt.

The Butch Cook Book by Lee Lynch (Author, Editor), Nel Ward (Author, Editor), Sue Hardesty (Author, Editor, Illustrator), Marion Moir (Illustrator).

LGBT Comics and Graphic Novels

I'll admit it, I'm not an expert when it comes to comic books and graphic novels. To feed the souls of my LGBT brothers and sisters who love comics and graphic novels, when I started my blog, I worked with Joe Palmer, the editor of the Gay League comic review site to present some guest posts on this blog. Gay League is an LGBT comic review site. Please check it out and support another gay blogger in his effort to bring you quality reviews of works that are of interest to our community. Books that Joe reviewed appear below mine in this section.

My Reviews:

The Art of Jaime Hernandez: The Secrets of Life and Death by Todd Hignite.

Tom of Finland: Comic Collection I by Touko Laaksonen.

Complete Hothead Paisan: Homicidal Lesbian Terrorist by Diane DiMassa.

Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic an autobiography (not fiction) done graphic novel style by Dykes to Watch Out For creator and cartoonist Alison Bechdel.

In an attempt to learn more about comics and graphic novels, which appeal to so many in our LGBT community, I did a genre review of the Yaio style of comic books for my July 24th, 2011 post. For those not in the know (which included me until I started reading and researching!), Yaio is one of the Japanese Manga style of comics that focuses on young gay male romantic relationships. The books are directed at a female reading audience. They're quite popular in Japan and becoming very popular in the U.S.

My post refers to 5 books that are very popular in the U.S. as of this writing. All are in English, including the one pictured above. There are, of course many, many that are published each year.

Joe's reviews (so far):

Teleny and Camille, a graphic novel by Jon Macy.

Rainy Day Recess: The Complete Steven's Comics by David Kelly.

It's A Gay Life by Aaron Palmiter.

LGBT Biographies and Memoirs

Please Note: Celebrity biographies (Athletes, Bestselling Authors, Entertainers, Politicians and Public Figures) have been given their own lens. This section was just becoming too full with all the celebrity biographies and memoirs included here.

Scandalous Women: The Lives and Loves of History's Most Notorious Women by Elizabeth Kerri Mahon. This book should have been included on the celebrity biographies lens but it defied any sort of categorization. It profiles so many women in so many of the categories, and while a few of the women were known lesbians or bisexual, most were straight. I hated to leave it off my lists, so here it is!

~~~~~
Following are the LGBT biographies and memoirs I've reviewed on my blog from "everyday" non-celebrities. Of course I've read celebrity bios and memoirs too. Please check out my lens specifically for those.
Hiding My Candy: The Autobiography of the Grand Empress of Savannah by the Lady Chablis.
The Last Deployment: How a Gay, Hammer-Swinging Twentysomething Survived a Year in Iraq by Bronson Lemer.
LGBT Non-fiction: Coming Out
I've reviewed several coming out books over the course of my blog. Six of them are included in other areas of this lens. On January 4th, 2012 I did a blog post naming my top 8 "Coming Out" books. I wanted to include all of them under their own heading on this lens so anyone searching for information about coming out could more easily find something that would work for them.
LGBT Non-Fiction: Teenagers
My blog site gets a lot of readers who arrive from the search engines via searches for terms like "books for gay teens" and other similar searches. While I do review books for kids and, especially teenagers from time to time, I admit I haven't really focused on them since I'm "several" years removed from being a teenager myself.
I took a day and focused on a list of works of non-fiction that are geared toward the gay - or as today's teenager prefers to call it, queer - teen in need of information, guidance or who is just looking for a book about others like themselves. These books, listed below, include information for teens who are questioning. Some of the books had been previously reviewed by me and I noted that in the list.
1. It Gets Better: Coming Out, Overcoming Bullying, and Creating a Life Worth Living by Dan Savage and Terry Miller. This was previously reviewed on my blog.
2.  The Transgender Child: A Handbook for Families and Professionals by Stephanie A. Brill and Rachel Pepper.
3.  Queer: The Ultimate LGBT Guide for Teens by Kathy Belge and Marke Bieschke. Illustrated by Christian Robinson. This was previously reviewed on my blog.
4. GLBTQ: The Survival Guide for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning Teens by Kelly Huegel.
5. Is It a Choice? Answers to the Most Frequently Asked Questions About Gay & Lesbian People, Third Edition by Eric Marcus. This book was previously reviewed on my blog.
6. From Boys to Men: Gay Men Write About Growing Up edited by Ted Gidoense and Robert Williams.
7. Two Teenagers in 20: Writings by Gay and Lesbian Youth by Ann Heron.
LGBT Non-Fiction: Transgender
I have very little "real" experience with transgendered people and the issues that surround them. I fully admit that my eyes were opened by watching the documentary film about the transformation of Chastity Bono to Chaz Bono. I read his book as well. In an effort to go deeper and learn more, I've started to read some other books and give my reviews. I'll list those books on this lens as I read them.
Books I've reviewed:
Squirrel Cage by Cindi Jones.
Transgender History (Seal Studies) by Susan Stryker.
Gender Outlaw: On Men, Women and the Rest of Us by Kate Bornstein.
Gender Outlaws: The Next Generation by Kate Bornstein and S. Bear Bergman.
