Leslie Feist: Canadian singer and songwriter (and that girl in the iPod nano commercial)
Feist was up for four Grammys in 2008 - Best New Artist, Best Pop Vocal Album (The Reminder), Best Female Pop Vocal Performance (1234) and Best Short Form Music Video (1234) - but came home empty handed. If you count getting to sing at the Grammys as a nothing!
Three Reasons to Love Leslie Feist
Leslie Feist (pronounced like feisty) is known to most Americans through work featured in commercials, such as the new iPod nano commercial with her song 1234 and for Verizon Wireless' Chocolate phone with the song My Moon My Man.Check out her myspace page for concert information, videos (including her Letterman visit) and more. Her main website is back up and really swank. Check StubHub for concert tickets for those April and July concerts.
So what I like ...
1. Lists among her musical influences Etta James, one of my all-time favorite singers, although I'm not really sure I hear Etta in her current stuff.
2. She started her own punk band at the age of 15 and won a Battle of the Bands contest. Love that kind of initiative and verve! (I was what, struggling to not make a fool of myself in front of my crush of the week?)
3. The cool kind of minimalist sound to her music. Many of her songs seem to feature her voice and just people snapping or clapping the rhythm in the background. Her voice is really the focus, not a lot of instrumental mumbo-jumbo. (Although there is that remix of One Evening that's just a piano solo. Totally unexpected among the other selections.
And the winner is ... Feist!!
Congratulations to Leslie on her 2008 honors!
Feist has had a big year in 2008 due in large part to the recognition earned by the use of her "1 2 3 4" song in the Nano commercial. She's not a newcomer by any means, but for many people, she has been a recent and welcome discovery.Grammys

Mushaboom - Go for this one if you want Mushaboom. The Postal Service Remix is disgustingly techno!
When I Was a Young Girl - Just love the background rhythms on this one.
Tout Doucement - I have no idea what she's singing, but it sounds so cool! One of those songs where her voice is really front and center rather than the instrumentation.

- I like Feist's French songs (like "Tout Doucement" and "L'amour Ne Dure Pas Toujours"), but either way, I love her voice.

- If I may Diane, I understand your frustration through your words. Once, in 1995, I saw "Starmania" in Mogador theater in Paris. I was invited by a very close friend of the family, and we were all in the very first row. Seated. :)

- Umm, Diane, I'm sorry you had a bad time at the concert. But this isn't Feist's page. I'm not sure that she even knows it exists. I'd suggest leaving the same note over on her official website listed above.

- My husband and I attended your concert in Deer Valley this month and were very disappointed in your attitude of those who were in a 'roped off seating area' as you put it. We were among the many people, including sponsors, who financed your coming to Deer Valley. We are a small community and are not all "rich". We paid extra money to see you as we love your music. I just had a hip operation, my friend had a knee operation and we were excited to come see you in a 'seated' position. That is why we paid extra. Not all of us are into rocking with you near the stage. We didn't see a thing through the second half of your show. We finally decided to stand in order to join in, but still could not see you. You have to realize that if we wanted to go to a 'rock concert' we would do so. You specified to our director that you wanted the crowd to come up front. Please be respectful of those of us who paid to have you come to our small town. You let your ego take away our enjoyment.
P.S. If you buy something from this page...
