Leslie Caron: Timeless Grace and Beauty

Leslie Caron was born in Boulogne-Billancourt, Hauts-de-Seine, France. Her father, Claude Caron, was a French chemist, and her mother, Margaret Petit, an American dancer. She had been prepared for a performing career by her mother since childhood.

Director Vincent Minnelli once said of Leslie Caron that the more you saw her, the more beautiful she became. In addition to beauty, she had a gracefulness that led her to be chosen to dance with France's prestigious Ballet de Champs Elysees. Three years later at age 19, Leslie Caron was discovered by Gene Kelly and starred with him in An American in Paris. She made a number of musicals, dancing with Fred Astaire in Daddy Long Legs, and singing with Gene Kelly in Gigi.

She also worked in European films, and won a British Academy Award for her role as the unwed pregnant woman in The L-Shaped Room. Though semi-retired from acting, she has recently starred in Chocolat with Juliette Binoche, and Le Divorce with Kate Hudson and Naomi Watts.

Leslie Caron began a new venture in Burgundy many years ago, a bed and breakfast inn known worldwide for its excellent food, wine, and ambience. La Lucarne aux Chouettes (The Owl's Nest) is located outside Paris.

Gigi, Lili, An American in Paris, and Daddy Long Legs, and for the non-musical films The L-Shaped Room, Father Goose, and Fanny. She speaks English and French. Caron started her career as a ballet dancer. But eventually Gene Kelly discovered her, and cast her to appear opposite him in the classic musical An American in Paris (1951), a role initially to be danced by Cyd Charisse, who was pregnant. This led to a long-term MGM contract and a string of films, which included the musical The Glass Slipper (1955) and the drama Gaby (1956). In 1953, Caron was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her starring role in Lili. In 1963, she was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in the British drama The L-Shaped Room.

Leslie Caron has long been a favorite of mine. There was just something about her on screen that was so captivating. I just finished painting a paper doll book of her for a publisher and it was a joy to do, with costumes from 5 of her greatest musicals. Think it will be out early next year (2011). I have read her book, Thank Heavens, and she is an excellent writer as well as a superbly talented actress and dancer. I'd love to see her hotel--must be elegant and picturesque!

I love watching her movies, the beautiful locations like the seaside setting in Fanny and the lovely costumes. She also was in the televised mini-series from the Leon Uris novel QB VII in the mid 1970s which was about a very serious subject matter. 5 star lens.
