How To Write Lyrics
How to write lyrics lesson 2. Why have you come to this page at this time? Are you wanting to learn how to write lyrics to impress someone, make a living, learn something new or for your own self esteem. I think ultimately all reasons are valid but remember anyone can learn technique or structure but not everyone knows how to tap into the true creative self. The true reason is you want to create something for someone to hear and hopefully that sound will get others to react in someway. The listener or reader will be able to relate in someway or another.
Dedication
All you will ever need to do in order to succeed as a songwriter is to persist. One needs to be extremely dedicated. Put time aside everyday to practice.
1. Pick up your pen and paper.
2. Find your space - the beach, a park, your room. (Where ever you can tap into the spheres)
3. Write
Remember as I mentioned in lesson one. It doesn't matter if it's not completed as long as you are writing and if you are not writing a song then you are practicing some of the creative principles taught here. I think someone once said that a nonmusician is more than happy to sit there and plunk one note all day. The same applies here. If you are a beginner then write but write with everything you got. Give it all your energy. As Phiip Toshia Sudo from Zen Guitar wrote " the idea is the same as a tennis coach who instructs beginners to hit the ball as hard they can with no concern for whether the ball lands in court or not. First learn the feeling of hitting the ball hard; worry about the accuracy later."
Please don't be filled with what everyone else is saying. Only you can write what is coming through you. Stop thinking about your day and what has happened to you because those thoughts will just cloud your judgment. They will however remain as a feeling deep within you. This is a good thing. It's a lot easier to express a feeling than a thought.
Whenever I start working on a song, I immediately try to forget everything, to empty my hands and head of anything that may be hanging over from another song or album. I try to approach it like, "This is the first time I've ever played a guitar. What am I going to do?"

Stimulation Exercise for Lesson 2

1. Stimulate your ears. Try listening to different music you haven't tried before: Rock, classical, rap etc. You don't have to like it but it will teach you to open up to a different perspective. Write down a few lines from 5 different songs and explore changing the interpretation of them. This in it's own is a lesson in creativity. How to see things differently and ultimately with a new perspective. Keep doing this for a while and I bet you will come up with some really cool lyrics.
Interpretation of these lyrics you are writing are going to be done a lot easier through voice or guitar. I strongly recommend that you start
singing or
playing guitar. Writing lyrics becomes a lot easier when you can express them with another instrument.
Play guitar here and learn to sing here. You're journey to becoming a complete singer songwriter needs all these tools.
I leave you with this from Keith Richards
" You can build a wall to stop people, but eventually, the music, it'll cross that wall. that's the beautiful thing about music-there's no defense against it. I mean, look at Joshua and f.....g Jericho-made mincemeat of that joint. A few trumpets, you know?
