This is Lesson Five of the Drum Tutorial I have written. It's for absolute beginners to drums and drumming. An easy and understandable way for people to learn how to play the drums. If you follow these tutorials at your own pace and you have a pinch of rhythmic ability before too long you will be able to hold a steady beat. If you haven't read it yet you better head over there now. Otherwise none of this will make sense to you. And now on to the lesson five...

Rehash

First you'll re-familiarise yourself with a simple straight beat that you've already learnt.

Variation

Next you will have a variation or a change of that beat in the 4th bar.

Punctuate

This is the same as the last lesson, but on the 2nd and 4th beats in the 4th bar we liven things up a little with an explosion on the Crash cymbal.

Comment: We dropped the HiHat on the 3rd beat on the 4th bar to make it easier for you. Although you may have felt the need to hit the Crash cymbal on the 3rd beat. But don't.

Control

This next one has a slight difference from the last one and that is that there is a HiHat on the 3rd beat on the 4th bar.

This exercise encourages dexterity (your speed in being able to get from the HiHat to the Crash and back again), coordination and control.

Comment: Once you can do this fluidly without smashing the HiHat and Crash cymbals then you can move on to the next lesson.

Something to think about...

  • Drumming is also about what you DON'T play. Sometimes silence has more impact.
  • One way of doing this is when the drums drop out altogether in a well planned and rehearsed band situation.
