This is Lesson Four of the Drum Tutorial I have written. It's for absolute beginners to drums and drumming. An easy and understandable way for people to learn how to play the drums. If you follow these tutorials at your own pace and you have a pinch of rhythmic ability before too long you will be able to hold a steady beat. If you haven't read it yet you better head over there now. Otherwise none of this will make sense to you. And now on to the lesson four...

Drum Lesson Four: Mixing it Up

Now we're mixing the pot up. On the face of it we're not doing much but it does add spice.

Be inventive. After you can play these ones without losing it or getting frustrated use the four straight beats you've learnt and mix them up and alternate between HiHat and Ride Cymbals.

Come up with your own beats, but transcribe (write them down) first.

Things to remember

The thought process behind being a drummer

  • Control: Keep a firm grip of your sticks, but not too tight. Be aware of what you hit and how you hit it. Hitting rims will damage sticks. And hitting a cymbal wrong will not only cause damage to the stick but sustained hitting over a period of time will do irreparable damage to the cymbal.
  • Speed: Be conscious of how fast you are playing to a song. Whether it is too fast, too slow or if you are waivering between the two.
  • Bringing down the noise level: this means playing quieter, but not slower.

About Jukebox

Music is a basic instinct of man. It's primal. People find themselves drawn by music, compelled by music. It inspires, encourages, educates, drives and guides. It is an emotion that can be felt as much as it can be heard.
