If a person is diagnosed with pre diabetes, there are a number of actions that they can take in order to prevent getting the full-blown disease.

On the other hand, Type II Diabetes has reached epidemic proportions in this country today. Many in the medical community have linked obesity as one of the major causes for the increase in this potentially life threatening condition. The diabetes epidemic has mirrored the obesity epidemic in this country as well as other countries throughout the world. People are consuming foods that are frequently higher in carbohydrates and sugars and lower in nutrients. Unfortunately, a person who is obese has more of a chance of developing diabetes than a person who is able to maintain his or her weight.

Thus, it stands to reason that one way to prevent diabetes is by managing your weight. If you are one of those who has a genetic predisposition, there is little you can do about that fact. However, there are ways you can prevent becoming one of the millions of Americans who develop this insidious disease each year.

Studies have shown that overweight or obese individuals may be more prone to developing diabetes. The number one rule in the prevention of diabetes is to manage your weight. Ways to help in this area include staying away from foods that are loaded with calories, such as saturated fats and sugars. Fast food, which is usually loaded with fats, carbohydrates and sugars should be avoided. Most fast foods offer little in the way of nutrition.

Regular exercise is another way to help prevent developing diabetes. Exercising regularly improves control of blood sugar. Active muscles utilize glucose from blood much quicker than do muscles that get no regular exercise. In addition, regular exercise is also beneficial in maintaining a stable weight.

The misconception that it is only those who eat excessive amounts of simple sugars are those who develop diabetes is not entirely accurate. While it is a good idea to eliminate the use of excessive sugar in your diet, carbohydrates also contribute to the onset of diabetes. Becoming educated on which foods have carbohydrates that are more quickly eliminated versus those foods whose carbs stay in our systems much longer can help you to choose better foods to help prevent diabetes or pre diabetes conditions. The Glycemic Index, a tool developed in 1981, rates which carbohydrates are more difficult to eliminate glucose from the blood. This tool can be readily found online or in diet books available at your library or bookstore.

Simply focusing your attention on weight, exercise and diet can help you to avoid setting yourself up for diabetes. It is often the simple lifestyle changes that can prevent a person from developing this potentially life threatening disorder.
