This Lens is About Money

No, this isn't a lens about how to make yourself rich, or even how to make more money. This lens is about my thoughts on money, what money is, what it is for, what people think about money, and how they use it.

This is my critique of money. It may sound rant-ish in parts. My apologies...

What's Money?

Money is something to buy stuff with. That's it. It is a means to an end. The only reason people need money is so they can buy what they need. Unfortunately, money also functions as a store of value which means that you can save it for future use. This leads to people hoarding it.

Assumptions About Money:

  • Money leads to happiness: Once I'm loaded, life'll be great. I'll be living the dream life...
  • Money leads to opportunities: Having money will enable me to do the things I want.
  • Money solves problems. Money doesn't solve people's problems. It is not a cure.
  • Money offers freedom: Peace of mind, independence, no boss, free time, early retirement.

I Want Money So I Can...

People see money as offering opportunities, allowing them to do things that they couldn't otherwise do. Instant gratification, impulsiveness. People no longer want what they need, they want money so they can get what they want. That is a pretty indirect way of getting something. People want a ton of money, but they don't know why or what for. They just want it because they know they can get more stuff with it if they have a lot.

What good is stuff anyways?

People want the big house, the nice cars, the clothes, the boat, all that stuff. For what?

Lots of money is never enough. The more money you earn, the more you spend. It's simple. You'll still end up broke at the end of the month, the only difference will be the amount of stuff you buy, or the price you pay for it. A person can never be satisfied with getting more if they aren't happy with what they already have.

Focus on what you want and need, not accumulating and stockpiling money in order to can get what you want and need. I think part of the reason the stockpile syndrome takes place is because people don't really know what they want. They just sort of assume they'll figure it out once they have all this money. People spend a great deal of time thinking about money, and a great amount of energy trying to get more money. Why not be happy instead?

Yep, thanks for the tips. It's still a work-in-progress and I plan on adding to it later. I'm not trying to make money out to be a bad thing, I just want people to think a little differently about it and realize that it is not the be-all end-all. Thanks for the advice.

Tons of potential for this lens! I gave it a 4*. I would suggest adding a little bit more regarding money, perhaps even a bit more controversy. (For example; "Money is the root of all evil", question the ethics of money, your opinions on money, etc). Still, good lens!
