2nd Week of January is Letter Writing Week!
The contest urged lensmakers to find a silly / strange / quirky holiday or celebration in January and make a lens about it.
While browsing through the happenings in the month, I came across a mention that the 2nd Week of January is Letter Writing Week!
Question - How long has it been since we've picked up a pen and paper, and physically written a letter?
Answer - Too long.
Here is reason to make a change in our routine, and to write an actual letter to someone we love. This lens will try to goad you into doing just that :)

Where are the pen and the paper?
First, find them! You can't write a letter without a sheet of paper, can you? And no - writing on your digital tablet, saving it as a PDF and clicking send won't qualify!
Remember the days when we received an actual letter - a handwritten one, I mean. Not the ones which come in everyday in bulk - invoices, notices, payment reminders, lottery notifications :) A real handwritten one! And no - not the ones which are with that strange handwritten font either :) Our people are immensely gifted at trying to 'personalize something'.
I remember a letter I've received about 8 years ago. It should still be somewhere in my notes folders. It was from a friend who I studied with at college, telling me about a new job he got into. He also sent in a snap of him at his workplace, and I truly treasure that letter. The modernista that I am, I sent him a reply by sms - saying that I received his letter and was glad of his progress at work :(
If you're laughing at that, think back to the day when you got your last letter! Some people reading this lens (the younger ones who were born into the computer-at-home generation) would never have received a letter in all their life! It is estimated that hardly 1% of the people born after 1990 would have gotten a hand-written letter, and that seems quite sad. The joy of finding an envelope with our name and address handwritten on it, waiting in our mailbox, has no compare. And the joy of seeing ink on paper, trying to decipher the handwritings of the scribblers we had as friends, is an experience we've forgotten. There is nothing personal about hitting F9 on our Outlook and reading a mail, and responding with a Yes, thank you! And no - having an @me.com ID is not personal either :)
Ok, getting to the crux of this lens, this is about the 2nd Week of January, which has been termed as 'Letter Writing Week' the world over. I've decided to write atleast a single letter to someone (probably that same friend who wrote to me many years ago). This lens will give you a dozen ideas (or more) and will also help in goading you into taking action and not just clicking 'Like' once you're done reading.
So here we go!

Idea - Letter writing with the kids

A fabulous way to get the younger generation interested in letter writing is by having a day of 'Family Letter Writing'.
During the second week of January, have your entire family together around the dining table, and pass around sheets of stationery and pens / pencils. If you have stationery with your family logo emblazoned across, it'll be great! But plain sheets of white (or colored) papers would do just as well.
The idea is to write out a letter which is atleast two pages long. Both sides of the stationery is fine too. For smaller kids, they can choose to decorate the paper with images and squibbles, or they can depict what they'd like to communicate through a picture.
Make ideas as to who they can write to - grandparents are usually the best :) They always compliment, and they will more-often-than-not, write back! However, don't choose someone within the same household - the letter has to be put into an envelope, and posted to some address elsewhere. And hopefully, a reply will come back the same way. And little kids can always write to Santa! His address is given below for convenience ;)
You start by setting an example. Take out your well-worn pen, and write away! And keep writing till everyone around the table is done.
Once the letters are all written, bring out the envelopes, get the addresses written, and get everyone to put the letters in the envelopes and seal them. If you don't have postage at home, don't head online and print it out! As a family, head over to the nearest post office / convenience store, pick out suitable postage, and get everyone to affix postage on their envelopes. Don't choose couriers!! The magic has to stay true :) Post the envelopes, and come back home, feeling good about yourself.
Then come back to this lens, and fill in the guestbook saying that you've done this, and I'll send over a warm hug and good wishes your way :)
Santa's Address
Several countries have Santa's addresses separately! But the most common one is from Canada -
Santa Claus,
North Pole
Canada
H0H 0H0
The Canadian postal service sends replies too :)
Accessory - Personalized Stationery

It is a great idea to have personalized stationery at home. Having something which inspires you to pick up a pen and write something is always nice. It is a proven fact that we like to write. When we were kids, we wrote quite a lot. Then, computers spoilt us. But then, if we count the number of words each of us writes - even today - we'll be amazed! Tweets, FaceBook updates, mails, chat messages, SMS, and all the official work we do - when counted, will come into several thousand words each day on average - and that's quite amazing!
To bring back the magic of writing, however, we need to get back to pen and paper. Atleast once in a while, we need to write physically to someone, and a great way of doing that is by having personalized stationery printed out. That can be ordered online, and here are a few great ideas -
- Have family stationery. It works best. Like you see in the image on top, it really is quite cute and usable. Instead of having real pictures (which are bound to appear quite narcissistic), these caricatures / cartoon images will make your stationery very appealing.
- Have personalized addressed stationery. We no longer maintain databases of mailing addresses of people. So your receivers won't know your address either :) Have a letter head kind of stationery with your address in the footer - quite like office stationery.
- Have something your kids made printed on your stationery. Little images of suns and dragons make for awesome ideas. You can upload those images and have stationery printed out. The kids will write more often since it is their own designs.
- Have hobby stationery - if you are a part of a hobby group, personalize your stationery with your hobby. Let garden implements or origami set the theme.
- Go wild and wacky - whether with Jane Fonda's aerobics or with John Wayne's westerns - think of a theme you love and have stationery made ready - afterall, the keyword here is 'personalization' and hacing paper which reflects your personality is great!
- Now use your own brain :)

Idea - Send in a letter with your Greeting Card
Some of us still have the habit of sending physical greeting cards - thanks be to HallMark and Archies!Online Greeting Cards don't come close to the effect of receiving something in the mail, and most of us have experienced it firsthand.
But we just fill in the name and the greeting, and post it.
Here's an idea - we all have FaceBook friend lists which show us the birthdays and anniversaries of our friends and family. Choose an upcoming birthday / anniversary / some other event, and pick out a greeting card from your local store. In addition to filling in the name and occasion, take a sheet of paper, and write our a letter too. You can absolutely be certain that the letter will be treasured much more than the card!
If you are the creative kind (children usually are! We give up our creativity as we grow older), you can experiment with a hand-made greeting card. Even if you don't make it very well, the person receiving it will find it immensely touching! Look at the image on top - it is from a girl who's received aid to her sponsor. You can almost visualize the tears in the eyes of the sponsor once she receives it by mail.
Another good thing about a letter as a part of a greeting card is that half your matter is pre-decided! You can wish them in your own words, and that'll help you get off to a great start. And you don't even need a separate envelope - the card comes in one :)
Choose from this selection of Greeting Cards!
Accessory - Fountain Pens / Ink Pens

The real magic of writing is when you have a Fountain Pen (a.k.a Ink Pen) handy.
Most people who write regularly abhor ball point or gel pens. They always carry a fountain pen in their pocket. That is why we see so many senior citizens still using fountain pens. And that is why companies like Parker, Sheaffers, and Mont Blanc still make and market these fine writing instruments.
Fountain Pens need not be very expensive. While the best of them cost a bomb, they are easily available at just a few dollars a piece, and make for fabulous gifts to people you want to spread the writing habit to. The only thing you need to pay attention to is that fountain pens need paper of a high quality to write well on. Using low grade paper can lead to blotting, spoiling the writing experience. A few great ideas in fountain pens are provided below in case you'd like to add them to your writing arsenal.

Idea - Write to yourself or to your kids when on a holiday
Frequent travelers - before the age of digital cameras and instant photo-uploading software - used to send postcards to their home address from wherever they were traveling. That way, when they came home tired after a long holiday, they usually had a collection of postcards waiting for them, and they could go over the travel experience once again. When you think of it, it's a great idea! In today's times, that would be the equivalent of maintaining a photo blog. Still, nothing beats the romance of receiving post cards with your own name on the to and from addresses - or you could write to your kids! Though we stay in touch with the kids every day of the holiday, it still is quite a delight for them to receive a card from them with our names and a little message on it. And you could avoid lugging around your computer! After you come back, you can just transcribe all that you wrote on those postcards onto your blog, and still have an online record to share with your people!
I remember a time when I was away at a leadership camp in school. There was an activity which required all of us to write a letter home without using regular alphabet. So we tried to draw what we wanted to express, and posted the card. However, I reached home a day before the card came, and still it was a blast reading it with the family! Of course, they did not understand a thing that I had to say through my squiggles, and it was good that I was around to explain it to them :)
It is also nice to send images that we click with friends, with a caption on them - once the holiday is done. Of course, you can upload to Flickr or Picasa. But nothing beats a real photograph with a little creative caption at the back. Really makes their day.
Don't forget!
There is just 7 days of time to write your letter. Don't procrastinate till the end of the week. The whole world has just 7 days to write to each other. How many people can you bring into the letter writing fold?
Pick out a friend you haven't been in touch with, and get writing :)

- Some people like me, have older relatives who do not have access to a computer so they still like to receive a hand written letter. Despite the fact that I have been online for some 12 years now and that my parents do have email, the last letter (it was actually a Thank You card) I actually write by hand was in December 2011 when my aunt gave my family some money for Xmas and told her brother (my dad) that she would love a card in return. So I sent one. She didnt get it until after New Years but she did get it. The only other handwritten letter I have written recently, was to the same aunt for Xmas 2010 when again she gave my family some money for Xmas 2010 and demanded a thank card in return. LOL
I have not sent my parents a hand written letter for - oh at least 11 years, We have always kept in touch through emails since I left NZ back in 2000. More recently we discovered Skype and have been using that to chat face to face once a week.
Skype is such a great invention!!!
This is a great lens - and well deserving of its Purple Star. Congratulations.
