A letter opener, or paperknife, is a knife-like object used to open envelopes or to slit uncut pages of books.
Vintage or antique letter openers can range from those made as personal gifts, advertising items or common run of the mill office supplies. They can be made from cheap tin or they can be exquisitly jeweled pieces of art.
I didn't realize how little imformation there is on the internet about letter openers until I started this lens. But I am determined to gather everything that I can to make this the premier letter opener site for collectors.

- We seem to have amassed a collection of vintage letter openers and very cool knives over the years. I am putting them into a garage sale tomorrow and if they don't sell, I am putting them on Ebay. Not sure what they are worth - we will at least get them back into circulation!
My favorite one was stolen some years ago, from my desk at work. It was etched solid brass and looked like a curved sword. My other favorite which replaced that one is in my home desk. It is similar but prettier and has a sheath so it makes up for the missing one I guess?
