Leverage is as Leverage does.
Get out of my head, Forrest
Maybe that should be Lame is as Lame does! Pardon my attempt at levity. Leverage is actually a subject near and dear to my heart.
I've always been fascinated with the concept of the Lever. I think the earliest I remember coming in contact with the concept was when I was a kid, growing up on a tobacco farm in rural North Carolina.
Though we still had mules to do a of the tasks (and heck no, I ain't that old; Grandpa was just an early proponent of "green power" way before it became recently cool), tractors were a major attraction to a young lad. I remember the huge tires, and how one day when i went out to the tractor shelter to see my Uncle James and Grandpa fighting to get a tire and rim onto a trailer behind the pick-up. They were taking it to get it repaired, rather than paying an extra service charge to have someone come do it onsite.
While they were gone, i grabbed the wrench they were using to loosen the lug nuts on the rim, and tried to loosen one of the nuts on the other rim. I puffed and grunted, and even STOOD on the wrench and jumped up and down. NOTHING happened. I spent the next couple of hours thinking my Uncle James was surely Superman in disguise. They finally retuned, and muscled the tire and rim back on the tractor hub. As James started to tighten the lug nuts, I took a turn at turning the wrench. It wasn't so hard after all. But once I got them as tight as I could, James snugged them up just a little tighter.
Then, i watched as he reach over and grabbed a 6 foot piece of iron pump pipe, slid it on the wrench, and easily tighten the nuts another half a turn. Curious, I asled Grandpa about that, and he simply said, "Leverage, boy". Light Bulb!!!
I promise this is the last long winded story from me about Leverage (or, at least the last one that will be entitled: Leverage is as Leverage does!). I will post a lot about the concept though, and specifically how we can Leverage knowledge instead of wrenches. And even more specifically, how we can use Leverage in our financial life.
Ciao for now, affiliates. Save gas; ride a MULE.
