Levi Garrett & Sons Snuff

I was so pleased when I obtained this 30 plus year old bottle of Snuff.  I was amazed to find that the snuff still has some fragrance to it.

Garrett snuffs were originally a nasal snuff.  The most common users of this snuff were men.  However, it is known that a few women would induldge themselfs with snuff by moistening a hickory stick with saliva and dipping the stick in the snuff jar, then they would suck on the stick for a period of time.

Garrett snuffs can be traced back to the banks of th eRed Clay Creek near Yorklyn, Delaware in 1726.  Levi Garrett inherited the snuff mill.  Levi was referred to as a tobacconist with offices in Philadelphia.  Levi had two sons and therefore the company was re-named Levi Garrett and Sons.

The W. E. Garrett and Sons Scotch Snuff was trademarked in 1870 and was one of the first ten trademarks in U.S. History, number 7, and is still in use today.

Eventually, the company was sold to James "Buck" Duke in the late 1800's and became part of the American Tobacco Company, which eventually became the American Snuff Company.  The American Snuff Company moved to Memphis in 1912 and again chaged it name to Conwood Company, L.P.  In 1975 Levi Garrett chewing tobacco was introduced as a tribute to its founder of the American tobacco production.

With the opening of the Braithwaite House, it was necessary for us to find unusual as well as reasonably priced accessories.

We have recently added some wonderful plug-in warmers in a variety of colors. These types of warmers use a light bulb to melt the "patti-melt" rather than a tea light. These wonderful items also double as a night light. Remember Christmas isn't far away - Dawn

Let's visit! Leave me a note so I can stop in and see you.

Nice lens. My sister was about 5 and she helped him look all over for it. Finally she ask him what he was looking for. He said his nail that he used to hold his overall strap. She laughed opened up the can she had and it was inside. This lens made me remember that. thanks for the memory.
