I currently live in Lewes and I have lived in Delaware all my life so I thought I would make a lens about all the things Lewes has to offer. Some Lewes History
Lewes is the oldest city in Delaware. Its history dates all the way back to 1631. The very first settlement of Europeans in Delaware was in Lewes. It was a whaling and trading post that the Dutch founded in 1631. Back then Lewes was named Zwaanendael which means "Swan Valley." This colony of 32 settlers only lasted until 1632 because it was wiped out by the Lenni Lenape Indians. Also on On April 5-6, 1813, in the War of 1812, British ships tried to bombard the city with cannon balls but it was an unsuccessful effort. Today a cannonball from the bombardment is still lodged in the foundation of the Cannonball House, which is now Lewes' marine museum. Lewes Beaches
Delaware was recently voted as having the cleanest beaches in the country, this includes Lewes. Lewes Beaches are located on the Atlantic Ocean and are some of the most beautiful and cleanest beaches in Delaware. Cape Henlopen is a state park which is in Lewes and has some great beaches for swimming and sun bathing. Cape Henlopen also has camp grounds that you can camp at overnight. The Cape is also dog friendly so if you have a dog you can bring them to the beach! Things to do in Lewes
There are many things to do in Lewes. It has many great restaurants that have excellent food and five star service. It also has many great shops and outlet stores for name brands. There is fun for all ages in Lewes with water parks, go-carts, batting cages, and a movie theater. You could also visit Cape Henlopen state park which has a ton of activities to do, or you could visit the beaches for a fun day in the sun. Whatever you want to do Lewes has it so come visit today! I grew up in Newark, Delaware and spent my summers in Sussex County. My grandparents had a mobile home right on the Indian River Bay and I would visit them often during the summers. That place was a blast, it was in a neighborhood called White House Beach. We had a golf cart that I would use to get around. My dad had a boat and we would go fishing often. I would also play golf at Sussex Pines, a great country club. Some nights I would go to Rehoboth Beach and hang out on the boardwalk with my friends. During the fourth of july we would celebrating by lighting off fireworks, something that I loved to do. I had so much fun as a kid in Sussex County that I decided to live here. After a few odd jobs I decided to become a real estate agent and sell homes. Well that's basically it my whole life in a few short sentences.
