Lessons Plans & Unit Materials for Teaching about Lewis and Clark
The Lewis & Clark Expedition ~ how exciting! Doesn't it send tickles down your spine? A journey on the way across a broad new land! Who knows what they will see, who they will meet, what dangers await, which obstacles they may come across?
The men and woman of the Corps of Discovery sure were brave heading into the totally unknown! Would you have wanted to join them? Part of me is saying, "Yes ~ totally!", the other part of me saying, "No way!" I'm too spoiled in our century ~ I'd want my favorite restaurant chains to eat at instead of 'unknown animal burgers' and 'fresh berries of the day'. It would be nice to find a clean restroom on the way also, not to mention to be able to give birth in a clean safe environment instead of the wilderness like the incredible Sacagawea!
Well ~ we are lucky. We have the chance to relive the events of their adventures through videos, pictures, books, journals, lessons, and interactive online tours.
Over all my years of teaching (uhm, does that make me sound old? LOL), I have collected numerous materials for study. I have some saved in computer files, some in word processing documents, some links under 'favorites', some on bookshelves and filecabinet, and others printed out and stored in binders. I decided this year to attempt to list various teaching materials that I have gathered according to subject in lenses in order to find them easier. I have used some of the resources below, and others I have not, but found them to look interesting. I don't mean for it to look overwhelming. Take a glance around, and choose what works best for you and your students. I hope my attempts at organization will be useful to others, too.

2009 Giant Squid Awards!!
Please vote for this page. :D
I was very pleasantly surprised to find out that this webpage has been nominated for theAs an extremely shy person, writing any type of article online has been stretching me way beyond my comfort zone! I started out writing this past year in hopes that the research I have done for my children would be helpful to other people who may be interested in the same topics. I simply wanted to share as others have done for me. :D I've had so much fun making pages and meeting wonderful people that I've continued and have been trying to branch out. My goals before the end of the year are to become an official "Rocket Mom" and "Giant Squid" here on Squidoo.
I feel so honored to even be considered for an award like this! The other lenses which have been nominated for the award are all so incredible! But, if you have enjoyed or been helped by this page, would you please consider voting for it in the contest?
You do not need to be a member of Squidoo to vote, click on the following and scroll to

Be a reporter through an exciting Scholatic News Adventure!
- Lewis & Clark
- There are four major sections in this interactive journey with Lewis & Clark.
Explorers. Begin by making a 'specimen box', packing for the trip, and preparing to be a reporter in the
early 1800's.
1 ~ The first station is at Monticello, Virginia with the president. Several steps are followed to prepare them for the expedition. "Specimens" are collected along the way to place in their box.
2 ~ The second station is Saint Louis, Missouri where explorers relive the trail in 1803 and then compare it with today. Mr. Jefferson's letters to the corps and the next specimen await them. While listening to Mr. Clark's 3 time great grandson and music of the time, read about the next explorer mission.
3 ~ Fort Mandan, North Dakota is the spot to relive the year 1804. Travel to meet several Native American tribes. Help Clark capture a prairie dog to bring home to the president. Write a news article or a journal entry of the events.
4 ~ Travel the rest of the way to Clatsop, Oregon through several rivers, mountains, and numerous adventures! Help Sacagawea care for her new baby. Collect more specimens and try not to get eaten by a bear! Look around the fort and get to know the Nez Perce better.
A teacher guide suggests gives the background, a book list, graphic organizers, assessment tools, writing assignments, and lesson plans for grades K-2, 3-5, and 6-8. You can also receive emails from Clark & Lewis, take a quiz with "Mapman", go on a cyberhunt, or visit another time period altogether! Teachers and students will all enjoy this grand expedition!
