Dispelling Some of the Myths and Bad Information About Lexington Law

Lexington Law is the clear leader in the credit repair industry. Lexington has been providing credit repair services since 1991 and has helped over 500,000 thousand clients legally repair their credit. In 2007 alone, Lexington Law helped clients remove over 600,000 negative items from their credit reports which probably amounts to more negative items than the next 5 largest credit repair companies combined.

Because of their position at the top of the credit repair world, Lexington Law is also the largest target for competing credit repair companies, do-it-yourself credit repair advocates, and basically anyone else who is trying to make money by helping people fix their bad credit.

Anyone looking for information about Lexington Law will, after little time at all, find numerous claims about Lexington Law ranging from the firm being a complete scam, to an ineffective dispute mill, to a completely illegal credit repair operation.

Let's take some time to look at a few of these claims and determine the truth behind them.

The Claim: The FTC Warns Against Using Companies like Lexington Law

According to www.creditbureauexperts.com

Credit Bureau Experts is a credit repair company out of Florida who puts forth extra effort to make the Lexington Law service seem less than legitimate and even implies that the FTC warns against many of the practices that Lexington Law employs.

According to the page The FTC and credit repair scams on the Credit Bureau Experts site, the FTC warns against using a credit repair organization that "implies you will have a team of attorneys working your case", "has more than one service level", or will "tell you the exact number of items deleted each year".

The first thing that should be noted here is that the FTC never said these things. Instead, the people at Credit Bureau Experts took a list of things the FTC does warn consumers about and threw in three things specifically aimed to discredit the Lexington Law service. What is even worse is that Credit Bureau Experts did this by stealing the text from the page The FTC and Credit Repair on the Lexington Law site and then making their misleading additions.

Regarding the merit of these claims, each one is a poor way of countering a selling point that the Credit Bureau Experts service cannot otherwise compete with. Let's look at each claim in turn.

1) Imply a team of attorney working case: For starters, nowhere does Lexington Law make this claim. They do take pride in the number of attorneys on staff that direct the firm, but this is more to show the credibility of the firm and does not mean that an attorney will be personally looking at each of the thousands of credit reports for clients. This is 20+ attorneys who could be disbarred if Lexington Law does not consistent uphold their high standards. These attorneys have a lot at stake when it comes to offering a legal and effective credit repair solution.

2) Have more than one service level: It is interesting that Credit Bureau Experts even tries to make the claim that this is a bad thing. Lexington offers multiple service levels because not everybody needs all of the services the firm provides. Instead of charging people for things they do not need to will not use, Lexington offers a more basic level of service at a lower price. Cable television companies offer packages with only a few channels or packages with hundreds of premium channels depending on what people want. Nobody considers this to be a fraudulent tactic worth of FTC attention.

3) Tell number of items deleted: The basis of Credit Bureau Experts' claim that this is a bad thing is that it could be deceptive because there is no way of knowing how many items are deleted out of the total number disputed. Unfortunately for them, their claim that Lexington is misleading consumers by publishing this number doesn't hold water because Lexington also publishes how many removals clients receive on average. Credit Bureau Experts counters Lexington's claim of removing over 600,000 items last year by pointing out how many items they remove per client per month. This might be a compelling argument if it weren't for the fact that Credit Bureau Experts has an unsatisfactory rating with their local BBB in part because they did not substantiate this claim.

The fact of the matter is that in removing millions of negative items from their clients' credit reports, Lexington Law has proven that their service works. If it did not, there is no way they would be able to continue to acquire enough new clients to continue deleting 600,000 items a year.

The Claim: Lexington Law Does not Provide Personalized Service

According to a popular reviews site

A common tactic for disparaging the Lexington Law service is to treat it's success and size as a detriment to providing a personalized service. Many companies imply that Lexington Law has too many clients to service them all as a high level. A popular reviews site makes the claim that Lexington Law is "a legitimate firm, but with their size they rely very heavily on automated systems. The personalization just isn't there".

Competing companies like to point out that they are able to offer a more personal service because they have fewer clients to work with, but what they never point out is that Lexington Law has far more employees than any of the competition. Lexington Law may have many more clients than other credit repair companies, but they also have a staff of over 400 paralegals and agents to service those customers.

These sites are making unfounded assumptions and providing a derogatory review of Lexington Law based on these assumptions.

The Claim: 250+ BBB Complaints Show that Lexington Should Be Avoided

According to www.addpositivecredit.com

Once again, people are taking a singular statistic out of context. New credit repair companies love to point out that they have only a couple of complaints compared to Lexington's almost 300 complaints. That they never mention is that a)Lexington Law has likely provided service to a few hundred times as many clients and b)every single Lexington Law complaint is marked as resolved.

Lexington Law is a BBB Accredited Business with a satisfactory BBB Rating. According to the BBB:

"Based on BBB files, this company has a satisfactory record with the BBB. A satisfactory record means a company has been in business for at least 12 months, and properly addressed matters referred by the BBB. The company does not have an unusual volume of complaints, or any government actions involving its marketplace conduct. The BBB understands and has no concerns about the company's products, services and type of business.

The majority of complaints to the BBB allege that the company charged for services after the customer stopped (cancelled) the service. Consumers should be aware that the company does not bill prior to service, therefore a bill (charge) may be received after cancellation for services that were rendered.

When considering complaint information, please take into account the company's size and volume of transactions, and understand that the nature of complaints and a firm's responses to them are often more important than the number of complaints."

With a company the size of Lexington Law, there are bound to be some misunderstandings, especially in an industry where the law states that a credit repair company cannot bill for services until after they have been performed. As the BBB states, the majority of complaints against Lexington Law are a result of these types of misunderstandings.

Other Assorted Claims

Watch out for a credit repair company that is "overly anxious for my business" and that is "constantly promoting" itself - Legacy Legal - As the most prominent credit repair company, there is little doubt that this jab is directed at Lexington Law. Once again, this is an attempt to spin a neutral characteristic as a negative. This is akin to saying avoid drinking Pepsi because they spent $3 million for a commercial in the Super Bowl. There is little doubt that Legacy Legal is just as anxious for your business as any other credit repair company, they just haven't been as successful at promoting themselves.

Number of client's helped is unimportant, all that matters is how you will help me - My Credit Group - Marc Chase in a blog post on the My Credit Group site likens Lexington's claim of having helped over 500,000 clients as being like McDonald's having served 1 billion hamburgers and then points out that is his last experience at McDonalds, his order was wrong. The implication being that with Lexington's size, they are bound to screw up. As addressed above, this is yet another attempt to make it seem like Lexington Law has outgrown its ability to provide a quality service, except this time it is through a humorous analogy.

Marc makes the statement of all that matters is how well a company works with you, not the number of people is has helped in the past. But one of the best indicators of how well a company will help you is the success it has had in the past. Given a choice, most people would agree that it is better to put your trust in a company that hundreds of thousands of people have already used, than to put your trust in a company that merely claims to be worthy.
