The truth behind the Lexington Law scam

The truth is that Lexington Law is most definitely not a scam. The over 3,000,000 items they have helped remove from credit reports over the past 6 years is proof of that. But the fact that people still think Lexington Law and other legitimate credit repair companies are lowly con-artists is certainly worth looking into. After all, why is it that when credit reporting errors and identity theft are so prevalent, people are so quick to dismiss a fully accredited law firm whose mission is to help them correct their credit reports?

To steal a line from Lewis Black (and tweak it a bit), one of the great things about the Internet is that absolutely anyone can have a voice and one of the worst things about the Internet is that absolutely anyone can have a voice.

Misinformation abounds in cyberspace and it seems to be especially prevalent around topics of large consequence and relatively little education. Credit repair is one of these topics. A person's credit score is an integral part of their financial identity but the average person knows little about how scores are calculated and what they can do to improve their credit score.

Unfortunately, this makes it difficult for people who want to learn about their credit to get the solid facts. The situation becomes even more difficult when talking about credit repair and credit repair organizations.

When trying to research credit repair, you will likely come across multiple and often times contradictory opinions. These opinions will range from credit repair not being possible or legal to credit repair being extremely easy. You will also find people who claim that credit repair companies like Lexington Law are anything from a godsend to an ineffective and fraudulent waste of time and money. How is a person supposed to ever come to the truth.

Perhaps the best bet is to weed out the extremes and look at the motivations behind each claim. For starters, we can definitively state that credit repair is legal. The Fair Credit Reporting Act as well as a handful of other acts were passed with the intention of allowing you to have a say in your credit. In addition, using a credit repair company is also legal as defined by the Credit Repair Organizations Act.

As for some of the other claims about credit repair, the truth rarely black and white. Credit repair is neither easy or hard. The difficulty of credit repair typically depends on the person, how familiar they are with the credit reporting system and its laws, the items in their credit history, how cooperative the credit bureaus are, how cooperative their creditors are, and possibly more. For some people, repairing their credit reports may be a simple process. For others, it may take over a year and require a significant investment in time and/or money.

The effectiveness of credit repair should be looked at in the same way. While most people will see benefit from working to repair their credit reports, the degree to which their credit score improves can vary significantly. Some people will see an improvement of a dozen points while others see an increase of a hundred points or more. Once again, it depends on the person, the details of their credit history, and a handful of other factors.

So how does this relate to Lexington Law? It relates because like the claims made about other elements of credit repair, the claims made about Lexington Law and specifically that Lexington Law is nothing but a scam are a long way from the truth.

Why do people say Lexington Law is a scam?

There are a number of reasons people give for their assessment of calling Lexington Law a scam. Here are a few.

  • There is nothing you can do to repair your credit
And as an extension of this, any company who claims to be able to do so is a scam. As discussed above, this is a typical fallacy. It is completely legal to dispute the negative items in your credit reports with the credit bureaus, work with your creditors to get them to stop reporting items to the credit bureaus, and so on. In addition, it is completely legal to use a credit repair company like Lexington Law to help you with these tasks.

  • Only you can repair your credit
The Credit Repair Organizations Act was enacted to legislate how credit repair organizations can operate. It makes sure you have the opportunity to get help if you want it.

  • You can repair your credit yourself
The implication here is that because you do not need a credit repair company to repair your credit reports, any company like Lexington Law who offers to repair your credit for a fee must be a scam. By that logic, all mechanics are con artists, tax preparation firms are all scams, and all chefs are screwing you over. After all, it is perfectly legal for you to repair your own car, calculate your own taxes, and cook your own food. Clearly this argument that Lexington Law is a scam because it performs a service you have the right to do on your own is ridiculous.

I was with Lexington Law for 9 months. I got absolutely ZERO results!!! I was very active in my own case. I could never get hold of them. I frequently would receive mail sent from Lexington intended for my creditors, sent to my home address. Simply put, I lost alot of money and got NO RESULTS. THEY SUCK!!!

Well, i agree that one can repair his / her own credit. There are other Do it Yourself credit repair which sometimes is offered for free or free for beta users. I found one of this at www.creditsmartpro.com. Haven't had the time to start with it yet.

Yes, credit repair is legal and it's your right to challenge negative items on your credit report. Yes, it is recommended, to have an established credit repair company help. Yes many of them are scams and telling the good ones from the bad ones can be a challenge. Yes, Lexington will take your money, and they may improve your credit, but it will be very slow, costly, and the results will be far from what you expect. Take a moment to Google "Lexington law scam" or "Lexington Law Victim". The thousands of horror stories and BBB complaints should speak for them selves. Simply put, use someone else.

I have been a member of Lexington law firm going on my fourth month. To date: I have had 22 items deleted from Equifax, 16 from Experian, and 15 from Transunion. Everything that was deleted was a charge off. My credit was absolutely horrendous. I now only have 7 other negative items on my reports and I am looking forward to reviewing my credit reports next month as well as my credit score. I don't even miss the money that automatically comes out of my account each month and it sure is great to no have to do any of the work. Honestly, it doesn't matter to me whether or not Lexington is a true law firm or whether or not Paralegals are actually doing the work or representing me. The improvements are happening and anyone who will "allow" the negative items to remain on their credit is either uninformed or needs serious counseling themselves.

UPDATE from Donna: I have now been with 9 months. My credit score has improved to the point where I have been issued various credit cards and am rebuilding my credit. I now charge things and pay them immediately online. This helps me start building good credit and it is now reflecting on my credit report. Without Lexington removing some of the bad credit, I would not be able to rebuild. What makes me the angriest I think, is the scam that we've all been indoctrinated with; the belief that there is NOTHING that can be done to fix/correct bad credit, that you have to wait 7 years, 10 years, etc. to fix your credit. By that time, various judgments, garnishments, etc. can be issued against you and then it becomes a much greater problem. My advice is to go with Lexington and let them dispute your credit as they are the professionals. Don't believe those that say that you can do it on your own. The credit card companies put up walls to stop you; this is the reality of it all.

What can I say about Lexington? I've only been with them for a month and I am already seeing slow, but steady results. I have been told by Lexington that it will take 60-90 days to see preliminary results; I don't have a problem with that. My credit damage occurred through unemployment issues; something that profoundly affected my life. For those that are not deemed "credit-worthy", like can become a living h*ll as employers, landlords, mortgage companies look into your credit report routinely. You are made to feel that you committed a criminal crime and that you should be imprisoned for it. Bad credit is most definitely a prison term and that's not an exageration. I am already singing praises for Lexington Law Firm. My experience thus far as been nothing but professional. I am informed of every dispute letter, every e-mail or other correspondence they are doing on my behalf. Their service is worth every penny and more.

No need to rip off Lewis Black here. FICO is a math problem. If there is a way in; there is a way out! I feel the need to reinerate the thoughts pointed out here. After two months of reading books, checking the validity of ceartain "repair" strategies and seeking truth and justice I finally went with faith and I disputed everything on my experian report with the experian dispute page. I then hired Lex Law and was then notified that three items that I disputed were deleted saving me a total of seven thosand dollars. so here is the question: Did I really need to fork out the money for additional credit repair. My answer is yes. Although, my attempts bore fruit, I can now sit back and let them do all of the grunt work. Sure, I had a great first bout, but Lex Law just declred war. The morale of the story, 100.00 a month will save me around thirty grand and when I am driving my brand new car with a 4.5% interest rate I will wave at the non-believers at the bus stop. Thanks FICO!!
