Lexi Sundell, artist and all around wacky individual

I paint flowers, roosters, and a stardust series, usually in acrylic on extremely large canvases. I love playing with color in these paintings.

I am an award winning jewelry designer with over thirty years experience. I create in gold or silver with precious stones and diamonds in unique creations.

My husband and I own and operate RiverStone Gallery in Ennis, Montana. We are in a great fly fishing destination and we both love to fish for those gorgeous trout.

I also love writing and have written two books as well as creating the artwork for them. The latest one was at the request of a major publisher, which was a challenge.

Designing websites is another growing interest of mine. That started with blogging and has expanded with time.

I often write about different forms of creative growth on my blog Energies of Creation. This blog showcases also some of my artwork from time to time.

I also garden like a maniac on two town lots, which supplies me with plenty of flowers for my paintings. Poppies are my favorites but I do grow some vegetables, particularly tomatoes.

I recently surprised everyone by starting to paint roosters. I had not intended to do that, but I saw a magnificent rooster with the sun setting behind him at a friend's ranch, and I was smitten.

I occasionally do entirely spontaneous creations, like building an upside down staircase in my house to surprise my husband when he returned from a trip. He definitely was not expecting such a transformation of the stairwell in three days!

Center of the Sun Original Poppy Painting

Colorful Acrylic Floral Paintings

I love to create bold dramatic flower paintings such as this painting called Center of the Sun. This particular canvas is five feet across. I typically work with acrylic paints and use a wide variety of flowers as my subjects, most of which I find in my rowdy and extensive gardens.

Opal and Diamond Ring

Contemporary Jewelry in Precious Metals

This 14k gold ring is one example of my custom jewelry design. Hard edged geometrics like the ring shown are clean and elegant, often working for either a man or a woman.

I also do other styles, particularly including graceful curvilinear forms. You can see more of my jewelry at RiverStone Gallery.

Mardi Gras Rooster

Rooster Paintings

The roosters in my paintings are dramatic, brilliantly colorful, and distinctly have an attitude.

Another one that I painted was named Bird of Fire, but the delightful woman who bought it nicknamed it Psycho Rooster!

These paintings have a playful spirit to them, meant to brighten any room.

My Grandfather's Painting

Random Biographical Notes

I was born into a family of artists, so I take creative craziness for granted. My great Uncle Mike and my grandfather both had what we called the Lanshaw Roar, as they could be rather volatile.

The painting above shows the original Lanshaw family homestead in Michigan. My grandfather loved the poppies that grew rampant on the property, as this painting shows. When I grew up there, the poppies had dwindled to only a few, but I grow thousands of them here in Montana.

And poppies are my favorite subject to paint. Actually I love painting the light beyond the flowers. I never really think I am painting the flower itself, but instead the light that creates them.

My Great Uncle Mike's Painting

Leland Fishing Shanties

My Great Uncle Mike often painted the decaying fishing shanties in Leland, Michigan before the city fathers went on a cleanup binge, destroying the character of the town.

Uncle Mike tutored me in oils when I was in my teens. Going to visit him in his uniquely hand built studio is one of my fondest memories.

Three reasons to love Lexi Sundell

Of course, there are more than just three reasons...

1. I paint flowers like nobody's business.

2. I can row a driftboat quite well.

3. No one, me included, ever quite knows what I might do next.

4. I share chocolate when I have it.

Lexi! Beautiful stuff! I have a question. My mother-in-law had a few Lanshaw paintings... scenery, different sizes... how can I get more info on them? Perhaps they were painted by your grandfather? Thanks for any help you can give me! CoraG
