LG BD 370 Network Blu-ray Disc Player Review

In the spring of 2009, LG introduced the BD 370. It's a fast and beautiful machine that has extras that many people will love. At around $300, it's not the cheapest on the market but I feel it is a good value.

LG was the first company to introduce the concept of Netflix streaming via BD player. They've expanded that with their model. In addition to Netflix, you can now watch YouTube videos. While you need a Netflix subscription to take advantage of their streaming, YouTube is free.

Since a lot of the price is in the value of the extras, this isn't the best choice for someone who wouldn't use them. For people who love Netflix, however, it's a great deal.

New to Blu-ray?

Blu-ray players are on their sixth generation, but they still aren't as common as DVD players. Because of that, a lot of people have questions. Here's some of what you need to know.

Blu-ray players play Blu-ray discs, which are the newest high definition optical disc format. Blu-ray discs look a lot like DVDs, but they hold more data, provide better picture quality, and better sound.

Bluray players play DVDs. So unlike the switch from VHS to DVD, all your old movies can still be played. In fact, Blu-ray players will upconvert or upscale your DVDs so that they look better than they did on DVD players. It's not quite high definition, but it's pretty good.

Blu-ray players usually play CDs and some other formats as well. Some can work with your Netflix account.

You can hook your Blu-ray player up to almost any TV. An HDTV isn't needed for Blu-ray players, but I'm not sure why anyone would get a player before getting a high definition television.

Pros and Cons

LG BD 370 Network Blu-ray Disc Player

Pros:

Fastest Load Times
Of all the Blu-ray players I've seen, this is the fastest. I thought that their last blu-ray player was fast, but they've made this machine even better.

Great Picture
No complaints with the picture. I'm not sure that it's better than other 6th gen players, but it is at least as good. Does a nice job with both Blu-ray and DVDs.

Youtube and Netflix
LG has been the leader in offering streaming video on their Blu-ray players since the LG BD300 had a Netflix option. The Netflix option is still here for people who have a subscription to Netflix, but they've also added Youtube connectivity (for free).

Cons

No High Speed WiFi Support
One addition I would like to see is support for high speed WiFi, along with the included ethernet. But, apart from some inconvenience, this isn't a serious con as the ethernet works great for streaming videos.
