Remaking Old Molds by Modern Glassmakers

L.G. Wright saved some of the most famous glass molds from various defunct companies, and had them re-cast by Twentieth Century glass makers. The results, usually different enough from the original glass items to prevent mistaking for the originals, are some fins glass items. See what is available by L. G. Wright.

Is Reusing Old Molds Copying or Preserving Our Glass History?

Glass makers went into and out of business with some regularity, and one of the ways to recoup some of the business losses was to sell the glass molds. When the purchaser reuses the old molds, there is nothing to prevent them from using them just as they got them. This leads to production from popular molds by several different glass houses with varying qualities of glass. How is someone to tell the difference? Does it matter?

Given the price of some of the glass involved, it does matter. However, when the mold is modified enough to make the items unique from one owner to another, it is easy to tell one "generation" of glass from the mold. L. G. Wright most often made these changes, so that his glass can be told from those by previous owners. Furthermore, in some cases the glass used for L. G. Wright's glass objects is better than that used for the original production, as he used some of the best glass houses of his day to make his glass. Thank you, Mr. Wright.
