You Are Probably Lied To Everyday

What are the signs of a liar and what can we do to learn the signs of a liar?

Unfortunately, most of the time, perhaps 70% of the time, lies go undetected.

That is an absolutely amazing number to me.
How often are you the victim of a liar, and not see the signs?

-Kids lie to their parents.
-Husbands lie to their wives and vice versa.
-Bosses lie to employees or employees lie to bosses.
-Friends embellish the truth at times.
-Etcetera

At some point, you are going to be lied to. Sometimes even more often than you might suspect.

"The person who seems to feel compelled to lie about both the small(white lies) and large stuff has a problem."(pathological liar)

So what's a person to do?

How To Detect LiarsLet's take a look at some of the signs of a liar.

Eye Contact - Typically someone who you are speaking with will make eye contact at least 50% of the time. If that person seems to be avoiding eye contact, or perhaps looking down during a particular part of your conversation, they may be lying to you.

There are more advanced scenarios regarding eye movement, such as up, down, left, and right eye movements.

There is more on eye movement below.

Verbal/Speech - Variation in the rate of speech and voice pitch can be indicators of deception.
Liars tend to use longer sentences than is required, such as when a simple "no" will do, they might say something like "No, I did not steal that $22.50 from the cash drawer" or "No, I did not eat that cookie."
It is also interesting to note that liars tend not to use contractions. Example: "I did not..." instead of "I didn't...", etc.

A guilty person may speak more than normal, inserting unnecessary information to make his/her story more plausible. This is generally a nervous reaction

Also, contradicting oneself can very well be a tell-tell sign of deception.

Body Language - Typically when someone is lying they will want to keep a particularly "safe distance" between the two of you. Additionally, the liar may seem "stiff", which is to say that that hand and arm movement may be more limited than normal, with the exception say of tending to scratch the legs or face or ears. Nervous/busy behavior. Not the the type of gestures you would normally expect.

I kind of regard these types of behaviors having to do with trying to stay inside of oneself. Being more internal than external.

How about sweating? Have you ever seen a person's head bead out in perspiration when concocting a story? It is something to see :( Again, that is nervousness showing. The heart rate is probably higher at this point.

Eye Movement Signs Of A Liar

Keep An Eye Out For These Signs

I Hate LiarsLet's take a look at some eye movement lying signs that you should look for in a person to determine whether he or she is speaking the truth or not.

1. The first thing that you need to look for is whether the other person is looking directly into your eyes or not. You will find that those who lie are usually not willing to look others directly in the eyes when talking. This is sort of a defense mechanism for liars since a feeling of uneasiness lurks inside them, stopping them from looking at others directly.

2. Whenever you are looking for eye movement lying signs in another person watch out for constant motion of the pupils. The eyes of those who lie will be constantly moving in all directions. These eye movement lying signs are an indication that he or she is trying to cook up a story in their mind.
When you see rapid eye movements in a person, you should deal carefully with that person.

3. Another tell tale eye movement lying sign is when you see a person blinking uncharacteristically. While blinking is a natural process, it is when it becomes unnatural that you can get a hint that the person opposite you may be trying to conceal the truth from you.

4. More often than not people tend to look down whenever they lie. You should therefore, deal carefully with someone who constantly looks towards the floor, when you are talking to him or her.

*Note: I believe that if you take notice of a person's overall actions, and not just one particular sign, you will be closer to the truth.

At one time, I was in Loss Prevention with a shoe retailer who did business in malls, and it was my job to root out dishonest employees, particularly store managers. I was flown to Chicago for a 2-day seminar detailing all of the signs that someone is lying.

Unfortunately, as things go, I had to travel to some of our stores and do interrogations. Most did not turn out well for the other person.

    I hate being lied to!
