Motifs

Motifs are very popular in crochet as they can be used in so many different ways. They are sewn or crocheted together to create afghans, baby blankets and clothes, tops, skirts, belts, purses, scarves, chair covers, cushions, and more. There are as many ideas for uses as can be found in your imagination.

They can be large or small and can be made with yarn or thread and in any colour or combination.

The design can be square, round, or multi-sided, and can be three dimensional or flat. A motif pattern can represent flowers, geometrics, culture, sports and more.

Design a Crochet Motif

You can design your own motif by following a few basic rules. There are so many wonderful crochet stitches which used to create a unique motif; picots, scallops, clusters, popcorn stitches and many more. You will need to practice and experiment but the final motif will be your creation.

Tablecloths, Runners and Luncheon Sets

The actual purpose of a tablecloth is to protect a wooden table from spills and stains. However, they can also be used to hide existing blemishes on a table. Besides this practical use, tablecloths, runners and luncheon sets are used to dress up a table and create a theme for an occasion.

Tablecloths can be made of fabric, vinyl or knit or crochet thread. Hand made tablecloths from thread are usually lacey, made in one piece or from motifs or strips. Traditionally, they were white or ecru but modern day threads come in a variety of bright and pastel colours or variegated colours. Table runners add decoration to the centre of the table and at the same time, do not completely hide the beauty of the wood. Luncheon sets usually consist of a centrepiece, placemats and glass coasters.

When deciding on table linens, you need to consider the size of the table and the room in which it sits. A large pattern or motif in a small space may be overwhelming; a very small pattern on a large table may be lost to the eye in the large area. Consider the pattern on your dishes as well; choose a matching colour to the plate pattern or a complementary or contrasting colour. Look at the edging on your table linens. Edgings can be plain, scalloped, fringed or lacey. Choose one that suits your decor and your taste.

Above all, remember that you are the person who will be looking at the tablecloth on a regular basis. If it doesn't please you, then don't choose that pattern or colour even if you feel it is correct for your setting. If you are happy with the final table linen, that is the most important factor to consider.
