"Welcome to the Library"

Here you will find some links specially selected by a group of focused librarians, to help you gain an overview of how to use library resources.

To begin with we will only list  links which cover the 'Web of Knowledge' in particular its 'citation linker' device.

Other links may be added if and when we can find the time betweeen researching for essays and creating presentations. for now, we hope this will suffice, and hope you enjoy the lens.

It is a work in progress so your patience is asked for while we create something we hope will be special and usful to all. Failing that, it's been a blast, so thanks for reading.

Guides To 'Web of Knowledge'

An overview to our Guide

There are many different guides available for people to learn how to use the 'Web of Knowledge'. Below is a quick squidoo-based guide produced by our team.

ISI Web of Knowledge Service for UK Education

ISI is an integrated platform supporting research and teaching in UK education institutions. It is a portal providing simple cross searching across Web of Science and ISI Proceedings facilitating access to:

Web of Science
ISI Proceedings
Current Contents Connect
Journal Citation Reports
Derwent Innovations Index
Plus additional products and external collections (dependant on an institution's subscriptions)

WoK is hosted by Thompson Scientific who owns the databases and the application, MIMAS support the service and JISC provide funding and negotiate and manage the agreement.

Coverage

The Web of Science consists of three large multidisciplinary databases:

Science Citation Index Expanded (1970-), Author abstracts available from 1991
Social Sciences Citation Index Expanded (1970-), Author abstracts available from 1992
Arts and humanities Citation Index (1975-), Author Abstracts available from 2000

These may be searched singly or in any combination. Each database fully indexes the core journals in its general area and includes the cited references making it possible to search for cited authors or works.

The Web covers more than 8,600 journals and conference proceedings:

5,900 (SCI)
1,725 (SSCI)
1,144 (ADH)

Over 20,000 new items are added each week with weekly updates.

The Citation Index

This indexes citations of a particular piece of research in subsequent articles and publications. You can search within the citation index, forwards or backwards. In other words, you can find articles that draw upon a piece of research, or you can work back to find the work upon which a particular article has drawn.

A cited reference search will bring up an abbreviated record of each of the search results.

How to do a cited reference search

Go to the Web of Knowledge Web of Science page [see link below]:

Click on CITED REF SEARCH button.

Choose the time span that you want to search, from the most recent update by choosing from the drop-down update menu, or a particular year or the entire database (the default setting).

Enter the cited author, work or year that you want to search for. You can use wildcard searches and Boolean search terms.

Click on the SEARCH button.
Bingo!
