Reading Right Now!

What books are on the go at the mo...

Today I've picked up "Sleeping with the Fishes" by Toby Moore. I've never come across this guy before but was seduced when I saw on the shelf "Death by Chocolate"... surely that's a book for me I thought! (See Library Monitors Book Cafe for more on my love of all things cake!). Anyway, I read the cover and discovered that this was the second novel by Toby Moore and that right next to it was "Sleeping with the Fishes", his first. I like to do things in order and with cover reviews including "Vitriloic, very funny... Sopranos-esque entertainment" (Daily Mirror) and "Slick , shrewd and smacking of the truth, this is the canny urban skit that many comic novels promise but fail to deliver" (Observer)I thought it had to be worth a try.

Apparently its the tale of a british reporter who's made it big in New York with what turns out to be a fake expose of the Mafia. I expect drama and hilarity to ensue!

I'll let you know what I think of it when I'm done - in the meantime if you've read this - or any other Toby Moore's I'd love to know what you think on Book chat.

Why not read it with me!

Why not read a book with me? This is the book I'm reading right now - be great to hear what you think of it as we go...

The Book Reviews

This week I 'ave mostly been reading....

Lucky Man - Michael J Fox

Lucky Man is the memoir of the Back to the Future star Michael J Fox. His devastating diagnosis with Parkinsons Disease during his late twenties is the frame of reference throughout the book, which covers his life from childhood through to teen heartthrob and beyond. He pulls no punches while talking about his difficulties in coming to terms with his disease, or in his struggles with addiction and the effect that both have had on a family, evidently dear to him.

Its clear from the start that Michael J Fox is a man with no low opinion of himself. Even the bouts of self loathing we are privy to during the days of addiction have an element of narcissism about them. However, this in no real way detracts from what is an interesting account of an interesting life and genuine challenges overcome. I'd recommend this to those like myself for whom Michael J Fox was a first big crush!

Tipping the Velvet: A Novel

7/10 - A surprising read. This is a beautifully written historical drama and a love story with a difference.

Amazon Price: $10.20 (as of 09/06/2008)

All Fun and Games Until Somebody Loses an Eye

8/10 - I love Christopher Brookmyre's books. Always full of humour, well rounded likeable characters and twists you don't see coming.

Amazon Price: (as of 09/06/2008)

The Hippopotamus

6/10 I like Stephen Fry, he's a true 'wit'. This isn't my favorite of his books but if you like him and his humour its well worth a read.

Amazon Price: (as of 09/06/2008)

The Bridge

9/10 - Iain Banks is another of my favorite authors and this is a book I come back to again and again. His books are simultaneously dark, humorous and uplifting and this is no exception as it explores the place between life and death and sets the reader a puzzle...

Amazon Price: (as of 09/06/2008)

The Lord of the Rings: 50th Anniversary, One Vol. Edition

10/10 - The Lord of the Rings is, quite simply, the best story ever written. Everybody should read these books at least once!

Amazon Price: $13.60 (as of 09/06/2008)

I love your lens - cool place for us bookworms to hang out! I am actually an ADD Bookworm (hey - new lens idea!) I am in the middle of Talking to Heaven by James Van Praagh, The Straight Dope by Cecil Adams, and the book my son brought me from school, National Velvet by Enid Bagnold. Quite a mix!

Memoirs of Geisha is a good read. I'm always slightly surprised to find it was witten by a man... has quite a feminine touch I think. I've not come accross the others you mention Tiff but will look out for them, Elsewhere sounds particularly appropriate! Thanks for the feedback. El :-)

Don't get to read that much thee days, most of my literature comes from listening to book tapes and CDs in the car whilst travelling around.
Currently listening to The Traveller by John Twelve Hawks. An interesting mix of faith, science fiction and thriller rolled into one.

I saw Elswhere and I though that was the name of the book - I just finished Elsewhere and also Stolen Child (loved them both). Now I have three news ones piled up to read but I'm currently rereading Memoirs of a Geisha. Great lens! Tiff :)

Favourite book has to be Lord Of the Rings - currently reading the Cure for Death By Lightening by Gail Anderson Dargatz which gives a different outlook on life!

Hi, I'll start the ball rolling! Been reading a fairly eclectic mix recently (see the 'most recent reads' list) but you'll see Christopher Brookmyre and Iain Banks cropping up a fair amount on here I think. Vey different authors but both have a wry sense of humour and a talent for the unexpected.
