Things to do in... Libya

1) Visit Ghadames.

Once one of the most significant trading settlements in the Sahara Desert, Ghadames has the ability to make you feel as if you have stepped back in time. An Oasis Town in the Red Rocky Desert (Hamada al-Hamra), Ghadames has a labyrinth of sheltered streets and alleyways that are a joy to explore. This deserted ghost town has remained virtually the same for over 800 years and is like nothing else in the region.

2) Wander the Medina of the Libyan Capital.

Within Tripoli's ancient walls, lies the heart of the Country's capital, the medina. Bursting with souqs, Roman ruins, bazaars and Mosques. History buffs will love Tripoli with its Fortress and (surprising to some) wonderful museum, which houses 300,000 years of Libyan history and culture. The buzz of the capital of Libya is quite stirring and if you love the hustle and bustle you will adore Tripoli as much as the history fanatics.

3) Cyrene and Leptis Magna

Two of the most hauntingly impressive classical ruins in the whole of the Mediterranean rim, Cyrene and Leptis Magna will leave you in awe. Cyrene was founded around 671BC and offers a splendid look at life in hellenistic times. Leptis Magna was a Roman City and at its peak, the most influential in Roman Africa. This ancient City is magnificent and its preserved streets, forums and theatres will leave you enthralled.

4) Berber Settlements of the Jebel Nafusa

This mountain chain, near the southern reaches of Tunisia are home to some incredible villages and towns. The Berber people, for Centuries, lived in underground houses, perfectly preserved in the likes of Gharyan and fortified granaries, known as Qasr, protected them from outsiders for hundreds of years. This example of an old and traditional life is one of the main resons you should wish to visit Libya.

5) Take a dip in the desert!

Visit the astonishing Ubari Lakes, where you can cool off in a backdrop of undulating dune and underneath a scorching sun. These lakes must surely rank as one of the most amazing places i have been to. They really stand out and taking a swim here is like visiting another planet.
