Lice Removal Can Be a Tedious Task

One of a parent's worst nightmares is a call from the school saying that their child needs to be picked up and cannot return until they have completed a lice removal treatment.

As a parent, I have gotten that call several times, and every time, I groan inwardly at the thought of all the work that needs to be completed that night - all the shampooing, nit picking (literally!), vacuuming, spraying, laundry and bagging of stuffed toys and dolls.

Since I have three girls, and girls tend to get lice more often than boys, and have a more difficult time getting rid of them, I know that this may be an issue at least through their elementary years.

I threatened to go the Britney Spears route and shave their heads, but the return threats of being hated forever made me change my tune.

Instead, I gathered an arsenal of lice removal tools to always have at my disposal.

The Lice Removal Comb

The Simplest Method For Lice Removal

One of the most valued tools for lice removal is a good nit comb. I'm not talking about one of those that come in the lice removal kits. The teeth in the plastic ones are too widely spaced to be effective at removing even the largest lice, especially in children who have thin hair. The plastic lice removal combs also break easily if the hair is thick or tangled.

If you do nothing else, you will need to purchase a good lice removal comb and spend several hours every day going through the hair until you find no live lice for at least three days. You will then need to wait for a week and do this again for at least three days, as lice take seven to ten days to hatch, and a newly hatched louse may be too small to go through a lice removal comb.

When you notice a new generation of lice bugs, it is important to continue to continue your lice removal combing in order to eradicate them before they grow up and lay more eggs!

Lice Removal Methods

  • Lice Removal Shampoos.

I am not a big fan of the lice removal shampoos. Not only are they toxic, but they are becoming ineffective due to the lice becoming resistant to them. However, they can be used to attempt to kill the lice.
  • Natural Methods.

Natural methods include olive oil, tea tree oil, Head Lice Be Gone program, Vicki's Home Remedy, heat, as well as other naturally created lice removal methods.

Since these are non-toxic, it is possible to use a combination of natural lice removal methods.
Important!

Having lice does not mean that you are dirty. Lice actually prefer clean hair. However, lice do make one uncomfortable and it is important to choose at least one lice removal method.
