License Plate Search Options and How to Search by License Plate Numbers

There have been several times throughout my professional life that either myself or a friend needed to conduct a reverse license plate search. You may be in the same boat. You could need to search by license plate number as part of a background check on a new employee or contractor. Or maybe there's a strange car that keeps parking across the street from your house and you want to find out who it belongs to. Another friend once needed to trace the license plate number of a vehicle that he saw his wife getting into when he suspected her of cheating on him.

If you need to do a license plate search, you need to be aware that there is no free license plate directory or search (unless you know a police officer who will do it for you). You will either need to hire a professional investigator or join a public record database provider service to be successful. Prices will range from $30 to as much as $200 depending on how to intend to do your search. Below are a few of the more popular options available:

Option #1: Public Records Database Membership Options

These sites will allow you to conduct your own searches using various databases. The advantage here is the price is cheaper. You pay one low annual fee to get unlimited access to data sources. These are often the same databases used by private eyes to conduct their research. The downside here is that you have to do the work and there are no guarantees of success. Here are a couple of popular choices:

Reverse Index Lookup - You pay $25-$40 per year for unlimited access and you conduct your own searches. This is a popular choice for many people.

Detective Lookup Services - This is a similar service to the one above. For about $30-$40 annually, you get unlimited access. This is another popular license plate search resource.

Option #2: Pay-Per License Plate Search using Professional Online Private Investigators

The only reason I say this is option two is because the price is more. You pay per search here instead of an annual fee. For between $80 and $200 per search, you can usually get the results you're after and you don't have to do the work. This is a good choice if you are limited for time and you want someone else to do all the work. Here are a couple of popular options:

Best People Search - This is easily one of the most popular places online to do full background checks, cell phone lookups and license plate searches. You will get outstanding service and quick turnaround.

Abika Search License Plate Lookup- Here you can do reverse license plate searches and normal license plate searches. You won't be disappointed here either. It's just going to cost you a little more.

A note on Drivers Privacy Protection Act (DPPA): There are certain requirements you must follow to search license plate records. Please be sure you understand these laws and how they apply to your search. For more on these statutes, visit http://www.accessreports.com/statutes/DPPA1.htm
