"Life in a Day" - A Crowd-sourced Documentary Film

Ranked #30,698 in Entertainment, #379,814 overall

80,000 submissions, 4,500 hours of footage, 192 countries, 1 awesome film.

The internet is changing the world in such incredible ways everyday, making things possible that were unimaginable only a decade ago. The ability to connect and share our experiences via the internet has changed the way we live, the way we think, the way we form our understanding of what exactly it means to be human.
The documentary film "Life in a Day" harnesses the power of this brave, new, internet-connected world in order to explore the human experience and the things we all have in common. Producer Ridley Scott and Oscar-winning director Kevin Macdonald have sculpted crowd-sourced footage collected from YouTube users across the globe, all shot on the same day, into a film that provides a moving, unprecedented perspective of life on Earth. This was a massive undertaking, with the final film being cut from 80,000 submissions, totaling 4,500 hours of footage, from 192 countries, all shot on July 24, 2010.

Crowd-sourcing Explained

The term crowd-sourcing, a combination of the words "crowd" and "outsourcing", refers to the use of a crowd or community of people to perform a task or solve a problem. Typically crowd-sourcing is done via internet, harnessing the power of mass communication. Some great examples of crowd-sourcing at it's best are projects like Foldit which allows the public to contribute to important scientific research by playing "protein folding games" and Galaxy Zoo where you can help astronomers classify galaxies using Hubble Space Telescope survey data.

"Life in a Day" Soundtrack
    Crowd-sourced Sounds

Staying true to the spirit of the film, the soundtrack is also made up of music created from crowd-sourced material and original music from people featured in the film. It was composed by world-renowned experimental musician Matthew Herbert and composer Harry Gregson-Williams using collected sounds and featuring British singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding. Contributors were asked to record and submit 4 sounds; a single hand clap, singing or humming a single note, the sound of breathing in and out once, and a personal favorite sound. Specific directions to NOT send music were also given.

Haha, well Haiku is not one of my strong points. This is a fascinating lens. I wish I could watch all the videos but the wifi I am using won't let me stream. :-( So I guess I'll have to watch the movie some time.
