Peanuts Wisdom # 1: Keep on trying.

Don't give up!

The following is a song by the Peanuts gang aptly titled Keep on Trying and is from the TV special It's Your 20th Television Anniversary, Charlie Brown. If you're a longtime reader of the Peanuts series, you'll have noticed that Charlie Brown is often portrayed to be a failure. The great thing about him though is that he never stops trying. He doesn't give up -- whether he's attempting a marvelous football kick or planning a chat with the object of his affection, the mysterious little red-haired girl.

This is exactly what we should keep in mind when faced with a stubborn dilemma -- it never hurts to keep trying because eventually, persistence will pay off.

Peanuts Wisdom # 2: Let your imagination run wild.

Open your mind.

The following song, entitled Clouds is from Snoopy: The Musical. In this scene, the Peanuts gang is shown gazing at the blue sky. The song opens with "You know, if you use your imagination, you can see all sorts of things in the clouds" and as it progresses, everyone proceeds to tell each other what they see: "Caesar at the Rubicon!" "The landing of the pilgrims!" "The pyramid of Kufu." "The fall of Rome!"

To unlock our creativity, we must look at things from a fresh, new perspective.

All you really need is love,

but a little chocolate now and then doesn't hurt. -- Lucy Van Pelt

Peanuts Wisdom # 3: Don't sell yourself short.

Be all that you can be.

Don't Be Anything Less Than Everything You Can Be is a wonderful, catchy tune by The Peanuts Gang, again from Snoopy: The Musical, that talks about pushing yourself to your limits:

Don't be a leaf if you can be the tree,
don't be a raindrop if you can be the sea
`Cause a leaf may fall but the tree remains
It may never rain at all but the sea remains
Better to be the tree and the sea, see?

Simply put, be all that you can be.

Peanuts Wisdom # 4: Believe in yourself.

Or if all else fails, fall back on your friends.

Just One Person is a strong, uplifting song from Snoopy: The Musical and it talks about the magic of having friends and the importance of their validation. Having one, yes even just one, person believe in you can be enough to encourage you to believe in yourself too.

More, and more. And when all those people believe in you,
deep enough and strong enough believe in you,
hard enough and long enough it stands to reason you,
yourself will start to see what everybody sees in you.
And maybe even you, can believe in you, too.

Sometimes it will have to take someone else's validation to show you how good you are.

I think I've discovered the secret of life:

you just hang around until you get used to it. -- Sally Brown

Peanuts Wisdom # 5: Don't force yourself to let go if you can't.

Do it when you're ready.

My Blanket and Me is a song from You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown which illustrates the now iconic pairing of Linus and his blanket (in fact, the term "security blanket" was coined because of Linus and his fondness for his blanket). In this song, Lucy and Sally egg Linus about being a baby because he won't let go of his blanket. Linus attempts independence from it then realizes that he can't, but admits that he may outgrow it someday. And indeed he does, as we have seen in the later strips.

It's foolish, I know it
I'll try to outgrow it
But meanwhile
It's my blanket...and me.

Letting go takes strength, determination and lots of time.

Peanuts Wisdom # 6: Happiness can be found in the little things.

Know where to look.

The most well-known of Peanuts anthems, Happiness is a beautiful song from the musical You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown and talks about finding happiness in any small thing, however mundane or ordinary, that makes you smile. Things like "Pizza with sausage", "learning to whistle", "knowing a secret" and ultimately, as the Peanuts cast realizes,

Happiness is anything or anyone at all that's loved by you.

It's easy to see why You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown is so popular. With its simple set and small cast, it has become a staple of high-school drama and small-scale productions all over America. Of course, this doesn't necessarily translate into a grandiose Broadway show, but this Michael Mayer-directed production is enjoyable. Anthony Rapp (Rent) plays an effective Charlie and Ilana Levine's Lucy is fun. The lively "Snoopy" number (Roger Bart plays the canine's role) is the musical's highlight as is "My New Philosopy" by Sally Brown (Kristin Chenoweth).

Snoopy the Musical

1983 Original London Cast

Snoopy: The Musical is a musical comedy by Larry Grossman and Hal Hackady (lyrics), with a book by Warren Lockhart, Arthur Whitelaw, and Michael Grace. It was based on the Charles M. Schulz comic strip Peanuts. This sequel to the musical You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown focuses more on the life of Snoopy.

The London production of the musical had twenty songs, while the American version had fourteen, including a few solos for Snoopy ("The Big Bow-Wow") and Charlie Brown ("Where Did That Little Dog Go?") as well as a song sung by Linus as he waits for the Great Pumpkin to appear on Halloween ("The Vigil"). Peppermint Patty also has a song where she expresses her love for Charlie Brown ("Poor Sweet Baby").

The world according to Peanuts

One of the most influential and well-written comic strips of all time.

Peanuts is a syndicated daily and Sunday comic strip written and illustrated by Charles M. Schulz, which ran from October 2, 1950, to February 13, 2000 (the day after Schulz's death), continuing in reruns afterward. The strip is considered to be one of the most popular and influential in the history of the medium, with 17,897 strips published in all, making it "arguably the longest story ever told by one human being", according to Professor Robert Thompson of Syracuse University.

It has been described as "the most shining example of the American success story in the comic strip field", ironically based on the theme of "the great American unsuccess story", since the main character, Charlie Brown, is meek, nervous and lacks self-confidence, being unable to fly a kite, win a baseball game and kick a football (with the exception of "It's Magic, Charlie Brown" when he kicked the football while invisible).

What was the secret of its success? I believe that we can all identify with some of the Peanuts characters at one time or another. How about Charlie Brown, who often feels like a failure; Lucy, the bossy one who always thinks she's right; Linus, who has to have his security blanket wherever he goes; Schroeder, obsessed with his own interests and oblivious to what else is going on; Pig-Pen, who's always a mess, and, of course, Snoopy, the lovable dog who takes everything in stride. I must say I have a little of Schroeder in me.
