About the Life Planning Workbook

The Life Planning Program in the resource section is a workbook style program that you can work through at your own pace, and is supported by practical tools, templates and assessments.

The different tools referred to throughout the Workbook, including a blank activities booklet, can be downloaded here.

We like to call this program a 'Life Planning' Program rather than a 'Goal Setting' program - the term 'Goal Setting' implies something specific.

This program can of course be used for setting and achieving specific goals, but think of your life as a goal in itself and in order to take your life where you want to, then 'goal setting' should apply to your whole life. Whether you look at life as the accomplishment of a series of specific goals, or 'life' as a goal in itself, this program applies to you.

This is not a 'system' or 'scheme' that will give you what you want, because we don't KNOW what you want - you're the only one that does. What this site offers you is better than that - through the Life-Planning-Program, it offers you the tools and skills for you to work out EXACTLY what you want and HOW to achieve it!

Make sure that you take enough time to go through each lesson properly - don't feel tempted to rush through the workbook activities or reading just to 'go through the motions'! The Life Planning Program will only really work for you if you put in the right amount of time and effort. Remember, everything important in life takes effort - having a productive and happy life is probably THE most important thing, so put the effort in - you'll be glad you did when you start getting results.

Each lesson has set of 'outcomes' - these are what you will achieve in that particular lesson. Make sure you understand these and keep them in mind when going through the lesson. At the end of the lesson, go back to the 'outcomes' and ask yourself whether you have achieved them. If not, go through the relevant sections of the lesson again. Each lesson builds on the outcomes from the previous one, so it is really important to fully understand each lesson before moving on.

And be prepared with a pen and paper to complete the written activities as you progress through the program.

"Can I just answer the questions in my head?", I hear you ask. "NO" is the answer. The act of putting something down in writing is very powerful as it takes something out of your mind and brings it into reality - putting your ideas and thoughts down in writing is critical to the goal setting process. Don't even attempt to do it in your head, as you are just giving yourself an unnecessary handicap from the start.

Tips for Using the Life Planning Program

Some tips for using the program:

  • Take as much time as you need to complete each lesson properly. Don't be tempted to rush through the early lessons dealing with preparation - as you'll see, these are the most important lessons you'll learn!

  • Do ALL the activities, even if they don't seem important. They are all important in helping you understand the goal setting process and successfully plan your life.

  • Only do one lesson per day at the most (it doesn't matter if it takes longer than this) - this gives your brain time to 'sleep on it' and digest all the information.

  • Make sure you really understand the process, even if you have to read the material several times.

  • Make sure you can concentrate wholly on the workbook - put the kids to bed, shut the door, get comfortable, and get into it!

  • Keep it personal - this is all about you, not about what other people think you should do.

  • Don't be afraid to write down your true feelings - no one else has to read it!

So, go ahead and plan your life! Do it NOW and achieve your own goal setting success!

Life Planning Workbook

Independent Book Review

Hi! I'm Nick Preston. I write reviews on self-help and success related products, and from time to time I even get to review great products that are also FREE. And this is one of them - the "Life Planning Workbook", from Achieve Goal Setting Success.

This is a step-by-step tutorial style guide to sorting out your life's direction and how to get there. So I thought I'd try it for myself.

The workbook starts out hinting that life is all about how to set and achieve goals (ho-hum - heard all that before), and the workbook does include good simple discussion on what goal setting is all about%u2026

But I was then completely surprised - and really quite curious - when chapter 2 launched into an assessment of my personality and characteristics!! And as I continued through the activities in this chapter - which includes some great self-assessment tools - I had one of those "A-ha" moments. And I learnt how my personality and natural abilities (and inabilities!) affect HOW I succeed.

So knowing this, I now know what I've been trying to put a finger on all my life - WHY I find it difficult to set goals! And this "A-ha" moment will be different for everyone - because everyone is different.

Chapter 3 then asked me to focus on the big picture. The activity on writing my tombstone inscription really helped me understand my life direction and what is really important to me. Afterall, my dream tombstone inscription is the summary of what I want my life to be - so my life's direction needs to take me there (another "A-ha" moment).

And of course, I realized that there is more to life than my job! In fact, the workbook identified 10 different life aspects that should be considered. Now not all of these life aspects are as important to me as others - "family" is definitely more important to me than "spirituality" - but until now, I hadn't really thought about the different aspects of my life, let alone setting goals for the life aspects that are important to me.

So I now have a much better understanding of what I really want, which is not what I thought I wanted before I started this workbook.

In Chapter 4, I learnt how to do a mind map which allowed me to visualize the interactions between the various aspects of my life and plot what I want to achieve. Also in this chapter I learnt how to do a personal SWOT Analysis and how to apply this to my ability to achieve.

So I now know what I really want AND what I can realistically achieve, given my Strengths and Weaknesses profile.

So I'm more than halfway through the workbook, and I haven't even set a goal yet! And I thought this was a workbook on how to set and achieve goals%u2026

But I have been through a journey of self-discovery, and I just feel like someone's taken off the blindfold I've been wearing for the last 20 years.

Chapter 5 - right. Here is the goal setting part of the workbook. Now I'd heard of SMART goals, but not SMARTER goals.

This chapter goes through the mechanics of how to set a SMARTER goal. SMARTER is an acronym for the characteristics of a good goal. And the activities in this chapter get you to chose a goal and develop it so that it has all the necessary characteristics of a good goal.

Chapter 6 allowed me to take one of my goals and prepare an actionable plan to achieve it! Afterall, what's the point of having great goals if you don't know how to achieve them.

And then finally Chapter 7 discusses the importance of reviewing your goals. I used the Success/ Failure analysis technique to look at why some of my previous 'goals' had failed. And yet another "A-Ha" moment - the outcome ties in with the themes developed in the workbook.

Once I'd completed the workbook, I had a renewed sense of purpose - I now feel like I really know where I'm going AND how to get there. I thought I already knew this - but not with this amount of clarity.

I also realize that some of the analysis tools are better for me than others - they're the ones that gave me those "A-Ha" moments. But the analysis tools that helped me the most may be different from the ones that will help you the most. I recommend you give them all a go, and then keep the best ones in your personal self-improvement arsenal.

The Life Planning Workbook does read a bit like a text book from time to time, but the activities help pull it all together and the end result - a personal plan to achieve your personal goals - is well worth the effort. And it's FREE.

    Great Lens!

Many people are so confused that they don't know what, where, when, and how to start attaining their dreams in life.

The question remains: "How do I go about achieving my goals?"

The most important thing to do before setting a goal is to develop the proper mindset. By conditioning your thoughts to the direction of your goals, you will be able to eliminate all obstacles that come in your way and you will be able to achieve all your goals in spite of the pending challenges ahead.

You will realize your goals if you are bold enough to come out of your comfort zone and if you maintain that laser-like focus despite people telling you that you can never attain them.
