Goal setting is one of many life skills that require practice and a little effort to get started. There are some other useful skills that you need to develop to complement your newly found goal setting skills.
How are your skills in the following:
Time Management
Time management is a useful skill in all aspects of life - and goal setting is no exception.
And most employers value staff with good self-management skills such as managing your time, so it is an essential career skill as well as being useful for making our lives much more manageable.
Time and self management is about making the most of the time we have available to us - we can't create more minutes or hours in a day, and you can't store surplus time for when we really need it. We can waste time though - and some of us do this very well - so the only way we can get more out of our day is to avoid the time wasters.
Do you know where your time goes? Do you procrastinate about doing difficult tasks? Do you need some real time management tips to help you through the day?
Planning and organisation
Planning and organisation skills are essential if you want to achieve your goals - they help keep you focussed on doing the right tasks, help you set your priorities and gives you the confidence that you are following your own personal roadmap to your target destination.
So planning and organisation skills are also essential for surviving this thing called life - and particularly in today's hectic world with so many time pressures.
Good planning and organisation skills in conjunction with planning tools can greatly help reduce the stress associated with today's society, make you feel more in control of your life and help you manage your time better.
You'll be surprised just how much you can achieve - just by getting organised.
Decision making and problem solving
I'm sure you've been in a situation where your decision making or problem solving ability has let you down - I know I have!
But there are tools and techniques that you can use to help make seemingly impossible decisions and solve problems no matter how complex. And being able to make decisions and solve problems with confidence is a life skill we can all use.
In fact, we all solve problems and make decisions every day of our lives - what will I wear to work? What will I cook for dinner? How will I arrange to pick up the kids? Many of these day-to-day decisions and problems are easy to solve, so you probably don't even notice that your brain is doing anything.
And most problem solving techniques are merely an extension of what your brain naturally does when faced with these day-to-day problems - brainstorming, SWOT analysis and Mind Mapping.
Attitude and Motivation
I always remember the quote from Zig Ziglar, "It's your attitude, not your aptitude that determines your altitude." And it's true! Shear guts and determination, particularly in the face of adversity, is what has made so many of our business leaders so successful.
We can only achieve our goals if we have the right attitude and motivation - the burning desire - to do so. And this is why it is so important for your goals to be personal - let personally desired outcomes or goals be your motivation to achieve success.
And apply that "go get' em" attitude to power your way!
You too can be successful at what ever you set your mind to. All you need to do is empower yourself and read the bawl on how to imitate success.
Use the power of positive thinking and the fuel of personal motivation to achieve your personal success - it's all about attitude!
Emotional Intelligence
Emotional Intelligence, or EQ as it is referred to, is what we used to call "people skills" and is about how aware you are of others, and how you interact and communicate with other people. It's not always about YOU!
Regardless of how brilliant you are in your field, 90% of what you do will involve other people - and more importantly, achieving your personal success will involve other people. So by fostering good relationships with other people, you'll achieve far more than if you're an unapproachable, sour old puss!
Everyone is different and has their own likes and dislikes. So EQ is about understanding yourself and how other people react to you, and then using this knowledge to your advantage in being a leader.
Financial Goals
Having financial goals is important for everyone - after all, in today's capitalist society financial security is required for our very survival, not to mention allowing us to live in the level of comfort we desire.
Not having enough money can be a cause of great stress, unhappiness and family arguments. But strangely enough, having TOO much money is also a cause of unhappiness - the endless pursuit of fame and fortune has been the downfall of many 'high-flyers', particularly if ethics and morals are compromised in this pursuit.
But whether you are making enough money, not enough or too much - what you actually DO with your money can have a big impact on your lifestyle. Someone with a well managed budget can end up with a better lifestyle than someone on a higher income that doesn't' have a budget.
So it's about how to MANAGE your money, not just how to earn it. So budget effectively to make the most of what you've got, save for a rainy day [and other things too], reduce personal debt, invest for the future and protect your assets.
