Life is an adventure - take detours

What do I mean when I say, Life is an adventure, take detours? Well, simply stated, it is my life motto. Life has taken me on many adventures. I look for adventures wherever I go. Sometimes my detours take me to a dead end, but more often I have found that the unplanned brings unexpected rewards.

Feeling the need to explore? Ever wondered what went to the left when the map says to go right? Love travel, art, people, photography and food? Welcome to a bit about me!

Me the Condensed Version

My Bio

Hello world! Thanks for stopping by.

Let me introduce myself. I am mom to a beautiful, kind, talented almost 19 year old daughter (see the photo above!). Married for 23 years. Sister, aunt, daughter, friend.

For as long as I remember, my e-mail signature has been: Life is an adventure-take detours. For anyone who knows me, I think that would be the fastest way to define who I am. For those that don't know me yet, see below!

How would I describe myself? Eclectic.
Some of my loves are travel, photography, cooking, reading, teaching ESL, writing, movies and art.

I am a self described "global nomad". I have lived in England, Switzerland, Liberia, Ivory Coast and Malaysia. In the U.S. we have lived in Maine, Alabama, Connecticut, Illinois, Colorado and Virginia.

I have been told I am honest to a fault. I have also been told I am the human equivalent to the resource center! I am a searcher - in every sense of the word.

My goal. To visit MY 1000 places I need to see before I die!

My favorite detour? Travel

My earliest memory of knowing I wanted to travel was when I was about 5 and my grandparents were traveling around the world. I have been fascinated by people and cultures for the same length of time.

It is my adventures that have made me well, me. Along the way to who I am today, I have lived in 9 states ( 3 times in Illinois) , traveled in 49 states, lived in 6 countries and traveled in over 30 countries.

I can not sit still for long without getting itchy feet!

Got the itch? Read some travel books

When I can't travel, I am reading about other places and other cultures. Here are a few of my favorite books from around the world

Tales of a Female Nomad: Living at Large in the World

A Day in DC ( a 2 hour trip from Charlottesville)

All photos by Rikki Hallowell

Where I rest my head now. Life in Charlottesville, Virgina

American History comes to life when you come to Charlottesville, Virginia. Most visitors start at Monticello (Thomas Jefferson's home) and Ash-Lawn Highland (home of James Monroe). A tour of Monticello allows you to see many of Jefferson's inventions and gives you a look into his daily life. On the breathtaking grounds you can see the gardens planted and harvested the same way they were in Jefferson's day. A short walk down to the newly opened visitor's center takes you by the Jefferson family graveyard where Jefferson descendants are still buried. Just around the corner from Monticello, Ashlawn-Highland offers a great contrast to Monticello. A visit to the two houses will easily take an entire morning. Hungry visitors often make their way to Michie Tavern only minutes away from Monitcello. At over 200 years old, Michie Tavern offers a set lunch meal typical of the late 1800's. Also operating as a museum,, the grounds and old grist mill gift shop are a great way to finish up the morning. After lunch if you want a break from history, there are many great vineyards including Thomas Jefferson's own vineyard to visit. If you are up for more history, the University of Virgina, which was founded by Thomas Jefferson and the Historic Court Square are located minutes down the road. For presidential buffs, Montpelier ( James Madison's home) is located an hour from Charlottesville. The house has recently been brought back to the original state and though not yet furnished allows you to see the influence of Thomas Jefferson in the actual building. Here as well, the grounds offer beautiful vistas of the Blue Ridge Mountains. For those with a bit more time, historic Staunton is just over the mountain. Woodrow Wilson's Presidential Library, buildings with great examples of Tiffany Stained Glass, historic civil war era buildings and the Frontier Culture museum are just a few examples of the sites that will make up a great day trip. Surrounding the Charlottesville area is the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains. For nature buffs, the Skyline Drive is a National Scenic Byway and easily accessible from many points in the area. There are hiking trails and many opportunities to stop and enjoy the surroundings.

Take a detour, feed your soul

Travel is more than the destination. It is the journey. The detours that allow you to experience the soul of the place. To me, in the end what makes a successful detour is what you take away with you. Each experience, each interaction, each glimpse of the life and heart of a country makes me a better person. If I can leave something positive behind, I have helped change the world for the better.

So you see, where I have been has been instrumental in making me who I am today.
This is a small glimpse of me. I hope my motto has in a small way made you consider your detours. Where will they take you?
