Life of Pi

The Life of Pi is an adventure with religious overtones by Yann Martel. It tells the story of an Indian boy named Piscine Molitor "Pi" Patel.

Pi is a smart lad who begins to experiment with spirituality at a young age. Growing up a Hindu he is introduced to both Islam and Christianity and finds positive and powerful messages in all three religions, and begins to mix the three of them together in a unique hole. He states he, "just wants to be loved by god".

The story of the Life of Pi is set in the three major sections.

The first section is an introduction to Pi and an understanding of his life, religious views and understanding of animals due to his life with his family who own a zoo in India.

The second section of the story starts when his family is supposed to move to Canada by boat. The whole zoo's menagerie goes along with them and in the course of the trip the ship goes down. High is able to escape and end up on a lifeboat with a Bengal Tiger, a hyena, an orangutan and a zebra. Much of the story takes place with what happens on that trip and how he and the tiger survived alone at sea for 227 days.

The final part of the story shows Pi meeting with customs officials. Since the customs officials did not find any animals they do not believe his story. Pi then retells the story of a far more horrible voyage for Pi and asks the officials which truth they find to be the better one.

The Life of Pi Movie is being written by David Magee and is being directed by the famous director, Ang Lee.

Cast of Life of Pi

Pi Patel The Life of Pi is not a big budget blockbuster movie with tons of glamorous and famous stars. It is a small movie about personal life of a very interesting man named "Pi" Patel. To avoid having the stars steal the movie most of the actors and actresses are complete or relative unknowns.

Suraj Sharma as "Pi" Patel

Shravanthi Sainath as Pi's Girlfriend

Tabu as Pi's mother

Adil Hussain as Pi's father

Irrfan Khan as the adult "Pi" Patel

Gerard Depardieu as The Chef

Tobey Maguire as ???

Tobey Maquire is stil listed as having a role in this film, but I can find no actual proof of his really having a part in the movie. I believe this may have been early speculation that they may cast the Pi character as an American rather than an Indian.
