Life on Mars is a British television drama series, which was first shown on BBC One in January and February 2006. The format of the series mixes science fiction - specifically, time travel - with police drama. The central character is policeman DCI Sam Tyler (played by John Simm), who after being hit by a car in 2006 finds himself somehow transported back to 1973. There, he is working for Manchester and Salford Police CID as a DI under DCI Gene Hunt (played by Philip Glenister).
Over the course of the series, Tyler faces various culture clashes, most frequently regarding differences in his seemingly naïve approach to policing compared to that of his colleagues. The series also features a strong ambiguity concerning Tyler's predicament: it is unclear whether he really has travelled back in time, is in a coma in 2006 and imagining his experiences, or is really from 1973 and mentally unstable.

- TV.com's feature-rich page devoted to the brilliant Life on Mars. The initial idea was for a more humorous, pre-watershed series that overtly mocked the styles and attitudes of the 1970s, with comic actor Neil Morrissey envisioned as playing the central character.

- The programme was originally conceived in 1998, when Graham, Jordan and Pharoah had been sent on a break to the seaside resort of Blackpool by Kudos to come up with new programme ideas. Originally titled Ford Granada, after the popular car of the 1970s, the series was initially rejected by the BBC.

Ashes to Ashes: The Life on Mars Sequel!
LOM has run it's course, but Gene Hunt will be back in the 1980s!
"Life on Mars" finished its two-season arc on the BBC in April 2007, but one of its principal characters will live on in a spin-off series. The British broadcaster has ordered a show called "Ashes to Ashes," which will follow DCI Gene Hunt (Philip Glenister) and his shoot-first, ask-questions-if-we-get-around-to-it style of law enforcement from the 1970s to the '80s. Set in 1981, the show will find Hunt working in London with a female detective from the present day who finds herself stuck in the past.
The finale of "Life on Mars," which aired Tuesday on BBC1, resolved the question of how 21st-century cop Sam Tyler (John Simm) was transported to 1973 Manchester. Simm will not be part of the new show.
BBC America aired the first season of "Life on Mars" last summer and will have the second season later this year. Producer David E. Kelley is also working on an adaptation of the show for ABC, though casting difficulties have pushed the show back to midseason.
Jane Featherstone, an executive producer of "Life on Mars," says "Ashes to Ashes" will be "a touch of 'Moonlighting' teamed with a measure of 'Miami Vice,'" the BBC reports.
The female lead hasn't been cast yet, but filming is scheduled for this summer with an eye toward a premiere in early 2008. There's no word on whether the new show will cross the pond to BBC America.
