Can I Feed My Puppy Life's Abundance?
Dear Dr. Jane: Why don't you have separate formulas for puppies and older dogs?Dr. Jane's Answer: If the food being fed is high quality and all natural, there is no need to have separate formulas. Life's Abundance is formulated according to AAFCO's guidelines of providing a 1:1 calcium/phosphorus ratio. A puppy will eat more and a senior will eat less%u2026each dogs gets the proper calcium/phosphorus ratio, and it's nutritional needs are met, no matter how much food or how little food a dog eats. Don't let these commercial pet food companies fool and confuse you with all their different age formulas. They have these formulas available because their food is not high quality.
Our daily dog or cat nutritional supplements ensure that your puppy and adults get all the nutrients needed to stay healthy. This is important, since every pet is unique, and has different nutritional needs

Note - Our dog Storm had hip and elbow dysplasia surgery before the age of 1. We were told that Storm would not live a long life and we were lucky if he made it to 7 or 8. By age 7 Storm started to be in pain while walking, sitting or standing. We put him on Agililty and within 2 weeks he was no longer whinning. Within a few months, Storm was running on our 5 acres and playing with the other dogs. Storm passed away at age 11 1/2 of old age and I believe without Agility and Life's Abundance he would have only lived until 8 and we would have had to put him to sleep. This product changed his life and added years to our best friend.

New Diet Drug Approved for Dogs
Be Careful of the Side Effects
The government approved the first drug for obese canines on Friday. Called Slentrol, the Pfizer Inc. drug is aimed at helping fat Fidos shed extra pounds.
"This is a welcome addition to animal therapies, because dog obesity appears to be increasing," said Stephen Sundlof, director of the Center for Veterinary Medicine at the Food and Drug Administration.
A dog that weighs 20 percent more than its ideal weight is considered obese. That takes in about 5 percent of the nearly 62 million dogs in the United States. An additional 20 percent to 30 percent are considered overweight.
The liquid drug appears to reduce the amount of fat a dog can absorb. It also seems to trigger a feeling of satiety or fullness, according to the FDA.
The prescription drug also can produce some unfortunate side effects, including loose stools, diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy and loss of appetite.
And it's not for dog owners. The FDA discourages the drug's use in humans and lists a litany of side effects should anyone ignore that advice. Nor is Slentrol, also called dirlotapide, for use in cats.
Instead of resorting to drugs, reduce your dogs eating and give them some exercise and this will help them lose weight. Remember your dog can not tell you what this drug is actually doing to them. Do them a favor - feed them a natural diet dog food and get some exercise.
New Healthy Training Treats!
Tasty Rewards is the great new treat for dog training, whether it's a new puppy or your old best friend. Positive reinforcement has never been so scrumptious. Not only are they yummy, we've included nutrients that may actually help support a healthy brain.
Tasty Rewards are great treats for small breed dogs, too.
Good behavior should be rewarded, but often training treats are the equivalent of "junk food" empty-calorie treats with no nutritive value and undesirable ingredients. HealthyPetNet's Tasty Rewards are wholesome nutritional training treats made from free-range, farm-raised chicken and venison.

Del Monte Recalls Pet Treats & Canned Food
SAN FRANCISCO, March 31, 2007-As a precautionary measure, Del Monte Pet Products is voluntarily recalling select product codes of its pet treat products sold under the Jerky Treats®, Gravy Train® Beef Sticks and Pounce Meaty Morsels® brands as well as select dog snack and wet dog food products sold under private label brands. A complete list of affected brands and products is below.
The Company took this voluntary recall action immediately after learning this morning from the FDA that wheat gluten supplied to Del Monte Pet Products from a specific manufacturing facility in China contained melamine. Melamine is a substance not approved for use in food. The FDA made this finding as part of its ongoing investigation into the recent pet food recall.
The adulteration occurred in a limited production quantity on select product codes of the brands below. This recall removes all Del Monte pet products with wheat gluten procured from this manufacturing facility from retail shelves.
No other Del Monte Pet Products treats, biscuits or wet dog food products are impacted by this recall, and no Del Monte dry cat food, dry dog food, wet cat food or pouched pet foods are subject to this voluntary recall. The affected products comprise less than one-tenth of one percent of Del Monte Pet Products' annual pet food and pet treat production.
Del Monte Pet Products has proactively engaged and fully cooperated with the FDA since the start of its investigation. The adulterated ingredients were used in limited production over the last three months for those items identified by specific product codes. Del Monte Pet Products has not used wheat gluten from this manufacturing facility in China in any other pet products except those described below.
Consumers should discontinue feeding the products with the Product Codes detailed below to their pets.
Del Monte Pet Products are 100% guaranteed and all voluntarily recalled products will be refunded.

No Rice Protein Concentrate In Life's Abundance!
We have had several inquiries regarding our foods, since Life's Abundance contains "whole brown rice". Some consumers are confused, as the newly recalled Natural Balance foods include "brown rice" in their names. However, the contaminated ingredient is not brown rice; instead, it is "Rice Protein Concentrate". None of our products include this ingredient.
Additionally, it is believed that this contaminated ingredient, like the wheat gluten involved in prior recalls, was imported from China. We use only human-quality ingredients from U.S. sources in our foods. There is no chance that this ingredient came into contact with any of our products.
We are fully confident that our foods, as well as all of our products, are completely safe. All of the products covered in the recalls of recent weeks included either wheat gluten or rice protein concentrate (and possibly corn gluten) in their formulas. We consider these ingredients to be unnecessary fillers, and as you know, we do not use fillers in any of our foods.
We continue to maintain very strict quality control measures in the manufacture of all of our foods, treats, care products and supplements. As we have noted previously, we devote a great deal of energy into using only the best vendors in the market, so that only the highest quality ingredients are included in our products.
We will continue to monitor these developments and work diligently to provide the safest, healthiest options for your consumers and their companion animals.

Keeping Our Pets Safe
By Dr Jane Bicks, Holistic Vet, HPN Formulator
First and foremost, the majority of our companion animals live indoors and they are accustomed to a warm environment. So please keep in mind that indoor pets cannot adjust to the harsh cold just because they are animals. Remember, if it is too cold for you outside then it is too cold for your pet. If your pet is accustomed to being outside during the day, make sure he or she is properly protected. For dogs, a dry dog house with a raised floor and some thick bedding made of straw or blankets will help keep them as comfortable and safe as possible. Check the water bowl to make sure it's not frozen. Animals should not stay outside for an unlimited amount of time if it is very cold. Young, old and sick animals are particularly vulnerable to the cold and should not be exposed to freezing temperatures for any length of time. Please make sure you consult your veterinarian if you have any questions about this. In the meantime, here are some simple guidelines.
Indoor Tips
Fireplaces and space heaters are great to warm up a room, but they also can spell trouble for companion animals. Most pets will try to get close to a heat source and may accidentally get burned or even tip a space heater over. So keep an eye on your dog or cat so everyone stays safe and cozy.
Pet beds are great places in which to snuggle and keep warm during the winter months. They come in all shapes, sizes, colors and price ranges. Cats love the winter sun, so why not clear a spot near a window for your cat to bask tranquilly during the day.
Indoor heat and humidity changes can raise havoc with your companion animal's skin and coat, so take a little extra time now and then to brush your furry friend.
Outdoor Tips
Antifreeze is deadly. If enough is ingested, it can cause kidney failure. It is a cruel fact that this toxic substance has a sweet taste, so animals are drawn to it. Even a small amount can be extremely hazardous to your pet's health. Please clean up spills in the driveway and store containers out of the reach of your companion animals. An alternative is to purchase a non-toxic antifreeze. Check with your car mechanic for more information on this.
Although the salt used to melt snow and ice on roadways helps us drive safely, it can be harmful to the pads of your pet's feet, so make sure you wipe the feet with a damp towel after a romp outside.
Cats and other small animals will often climb inside a parked car, near the engine because it is a warm refuge. Before you start your car, bang on the hood or honk your horn to scare any animals away and avoid a horrible accident.
Before taking your dog out for a winter walk, fit him or her with a sweater or heavy tee shirt. This is an inexpensive way to protect your dog from the cold and it works great for small and large dogs. The freezing cold temperatures constrict the bronchi of the lungs, so it is important to keep the chest warm.
Here's one final word of advice for all pet parents with senior and arthritic dogs and cats. The cold weather is particularly hard on these animals. Their joints may be become a little more tender than usual and their mobility may decrease due to stiffness. Supervision when climbing stairs or walking on the ice outside is necessary to avoid slip and fall accidents. A ramp will make it easier to get in and out of the house. And, of course, a comfortable pet bed really goes a long way for these animals.
I hope you and your companion animals enjoy a wonderful and safe winter season.

Hartz Vitamin Care For Cats Recalled!
Salmonella. Hartz is fully cooperating with the US Food and Drug Administration in this voluntary recall. Hartz recalled a specific lot code of Hartz Vitamin Care for Cats last November due to similar
concerns. Both lot codes were manufactured for Hartz by UFAC (USA) Inc. in 2007, and were removed from distribution last November. However, bottles from the second lot had been shipped to customers prior to their having been removed from distribution.

Is Your Pet Suffering from Kidney Disease, Allergies, or an Inflammatory Condition?
Adding fish oil to your pet's diet provides anti-inflammatory effects and can help relieve itching, scratching and allergy-related skin conditions. If you are battling health problems with your pet such as allergies, skin conditions, arthritis, kidney disease, or cancer, try pharmaceutical quality SeaLogix Fish Oil. The same holds true for us humans!
Fish oil is very effective in some pets with allergies and skin disease. It is easy to administer (via gel caps or liquid) and can reduce the amount of corticosteroid or antihistamine needed to control itching. Most pets take either form well. For pets that are difficult to "pill," the liquid form is quite popular. Owners of dogs and cats 20 pounds and under find the liquid form more cost effective than the large bottle of fatty acid capsules that we prescribe. The response is variable in other diseases (such as kidney disease) but fish oil appears effective in research studies. In pets with some types of cancer, fish oil has slowed down the growth and spread of the cancer. While more studies are needed on other types of cancer, the general recommendation is to add fish oil to the diets of all pets with cancer.
As with other supplements, the use of fatty acids often allows doctors to lower the dosages of drugs such as corticosteroids or antihistamines. Choosing a high quality Omega-3 fish oil supplement with exceptional purity and freshness, as well as, high levels of Omega-3s is key to supporting pet health.

Info On Pet Food Recall List
Check This List Monthly For Updates
A portion of the tainted pet food was used to produce farm animal feed and fish feed. FDA and the U.S. Department of Agriculture discovered that some animals that ate the tainted feed had been processed into human food. Government scientists have determined that there is very low risk to human health from consuming food from animals that ate tainted feed. All tainted pet food, animal and fish feed, and vegetable proteins continue to be recalled and destroyed.
As a result of FDA and USDA's comprehensive investigation, on February 6, 2008, FDA announced that two Chinese nationals and the businesses they operate, along with a U.S. company and its president and chief executive officer, were indicted by a federal grand jury for their roles in a scheme to import products purported to be wheat gluten into the United States that were contaminated with melamine.

Identification for Dogs & Cats - Keeping Pets Safe
Even though I am sure that you keep a close eye on your companion animal when outdoors, a number of things can happen to separate you. If this does take place, the proper identification will help reunite you with your pet. Animals without ID tags are often mistaken as strays and they are sometimes treated differently, so make sure your dog or cat has the proper identification. I suggest a sturdy, yet comfortable, breakaway collar with an ID tag containing your pet's name plus your name, address and phone number. Also, hook your pet's rabies tag on the collar.
As some collars can fall off and others break away if caught on an object, a microchip is a good idea. This is a very small device that your veterinarian can inject under the skin around the shoulder blades. The chip has a number that is registered with the manufacturer and other local, state and nationwide agencies. Many shelters and vets have scanners that read the number on the microchip. Then, it's a simple call to the manufacturer or agency to get your name and phone number for a happy ending.
Lawn and Garden Dangers
As the weather warms up, the neighborhood seems to wake up to lawn and garden care. Many common fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides can be toxic to animals if inhaled or ingested. There is some indication from recent studies that the rising rate of certain cancers in dogs and children may be linked to herbicides and pesticides. To be safe, make sure you read and follow the directions carefully. During and after treatment, be sure to keep your pets away from the lawn or garden until the area is completely dry. In some cases, this could mean an entire day. If your pet is accidentally exposed to any lawn or garden treatment, act quickly. Wash your pet immediately with liquid dish soap and call your veterinarian.
Want a safer alternative? Go organic. In general, these kinds of lawn and garden treatments are safer. However, again, please read and follow the instructions carefully.
P.S. Can your dog or cat use a little sprucing up, but it is too chilly for a bath? Try our Bath Fresh Mist. An easy-to-use spray that is enhanced with a moisture-activated odor-fighter that safely absorbs and neutralizes odors, giving your pet a fresh "just bathed" look and feel. Contains a blend of certified organic herbal extracts, pure plant botanicals and natural fruit extracts that assist with detangling as well as nourishing the coat's natural condition, leaving it soft, luxurious and delicately fragrant. Not just a cover up - actually neutralizes odors. Rinse Free Formula!
Life's Abundance Dog Food Testimonial
We have a now-4 year old Black lab mix. He would walk a couple of steps and scratch then walk some more and then scratch again. And also you could always tell right where he had been laying as there was always always a MOUND of hair he would leave behind!! His food was the "run of the mill" dog food. Nothing out of the ordinary and his body knew it!!! Too bad for him his owner didn't :(
We decided to switch after being convinced by my brother who had recently adopted a boxer and wanted the best food for his puppy. I THOUGHT dog food was dog food
So, we decided to order a med size bag and see how it went. He definitely liked the food and even in the transition there wasn't any diarrhea or any potty problems. After about a week, you could see a difference in his coat. What was once dull and lack
luster, had a sheen and a softness that just made you want to pet!! Then the pads of his feet began to change...softer, almost as if someone had put lotion on them! The shedding stopped! So did the itching!! and this was when I KNEW We had found our dog food!!!
Thank you all for all of your hard work and efforts to make a dog food that is healthy for peoples' animals. I joke that my dogs probably eat better than I do!! Maybe you could get into health foods for people too!
It was wonderful not to have to worry about the dogfood scare! When people would ask me, I knew that I had nothing to worry about because I have the absolute best dog food in the world!
Thank you for saving me a lot of vet visits and saving me $ ... which was the next step.
Without Life's Abdundance, My dog and my life would be much different!!! But I'm not sure happier!!

Strengthen Your Pet's Immune System
The immune system is made up of a complex and integrated arrangement of organs, tissues, white blood cells and antibodies. The system works by protecting the body from potentially harmful bacteria, microbes, viruses, toxins and parasites %u2026 fighting disease, infections and various pathogens. Although I could go on and on talking about this highly complex system, I would like to highlight two vital aspects of the immune system: antioxidants and the G.A.L.T.
Antioxidants are the most commonly discussed nutrients in relation to the immune system because they protect the body by destroying harmful substances known as free radicals. Free radicals are formed inside the body as a by-product of metabolism and also in response to environmental elements, like exposure to ultraviolet light, air pollution, etc. In order to support healthy immune function, it is vital that your pet gets enough antioxidants to disarm harmful free radicals.
Fruits, vegetables and grasses are full of powerful antioxidants. Actually, I believe that Life's Abundance Premium Health Food was one of the first brands to include antioxidants from whole foods. Dogs and cats need antioxidants from a wide variety of foods, including squash, zucchini, rice germ, flax seed meal, herbs, liver, and natural vitamin E. You can give your dog apples, pears and other fruits. Fresh veggies work well for dogs and occasionally for cats. I have a cat that carries raw string beans in her mouth and howls as though it is something important, and eventually eats most of it.
Another critical part of the immune system is found in the intestines or the Gut Associated Lymphoid Tissue (G.A.L.T.), which communicates with the immune cells located throughout the body. In some respects, the G.A.L.T. is the first line of defense in the body. That's why Life's Abundance foods and other HealthyPetNet products contain a special fiber and mix of friendly bacteria to support intestinal health.
We all want the very best for our beloved animals. We should feel fortunate to live in a time when breakthroughs in medical research help us to help them live longer and happier lives. Thanks to the solid research we now have regarding immune and GI health, we are pleased to bring you a truly superior line of food, treat and supplement products for your companion animals. To better health for all dogs and cats!
Rimadyl Alternative
Dr Jane Bicks, Product Formulator For HealthyPetNet
I've read that Rimadyl can harm my pet over time because it's a steroid. I'm scared to give my dog anymore because I've just learned of all the possible side affects. Can you recommend a natural alternative that works, please?
Dr Jane's Answer:
Absolutely! I'd like to recommend you try our Agility. Agility is safer than steroids and NSAID's because it is an ALL NATURAL supplement that delivers special nutrients and herbs to the joint, bones sand surrounding tissue. Agility is a safe alternative with no side effects. Steroids and NSAID's (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) can have medical disadvantages such as pancreatic disease, diabetes and liver disease to name a few.

Omega 3 For Pets
Question For Dr Jane Bicks, Product Formulator
Dr Jane's Answer: Our Skin and Coat Formula for Dogs and Cats contains natural, wholesome skin & health support nutrients including fish oil (omega fatty acids) and vitamin E in a delicious roast beef flavor chewable (not in a liquid which goes rancid or a capsule). Fatty acids are microencapsulated for better absorption. Microencapsulation is an expensive, state-of-the-art process where oils/fats are made very small to promote better absorption in the intestines. This enables your pet to receive the full benefit of the oils. Oil is certified free of contaminates such as mercury & lead. Manufactured by a pharmaceutical plant that makes human products. This formula was tested on over 200 dogs in over 40 veterinary clinics and proven effective. This product has been sold for more than 7 to 8 years, and is non allergic.
Omega Fatty Acids: All oils are classified according to their chemical structure and their function in the body. Fish such as herring and salmon contain high amounts of Omega-3 oils, as do wild game. These oils are being studied intensively for their nutritional value throughout the body in humans, dogs and cats. Cornell Feline Health Center was one of the first to demonstrate the positive effects of Omega-3 oils in maintaining healthy skin and coat.

She has worked for several major manufacturers and is truly an expert. She knows the importance of quality of ingredients and nutrient balance.
This is Dr. Jane's philosophy of feeding dogs. Dr. Jane says " Dogs need fresh water, protein, carbohydrates, fats, minerals and vitamins. The most important requirement is water, which makes up 60 percent of a dog's weight. Proteins, fats and carbohydrates are necessary for energy; minerals are important for nerve conduction, muscle contraction, among other things; and vitamins are important to help your dog process biochemicals".
Dr. Jane also feels strongly that dogs need not only good quality foods, but also in the right proportions. Many of our pet food ingredients in the United States come from China with lower standards for growing, farming, and preparation. Pet food companies are also not required to list everything in their ingredients the way human foods are. Dogs need food that is well-balanced & scientifically formulated just for him or her.
"Well-balanced" means that for each ingredient in your dog's food, there are other ingredients that form chemical reactions to release the proper nutrition for your dog. This is what you want! This is what your dog wants! Dr. Jane believes every dog "deserves the goodness of a home-cooked meal".
There is a lot to learn about proper nutrition but as a rule of thumb when you are purchasing dog food, you need two things.
1. First, you need a food that has the quality of ingredients (and in the right proportions) that your dog needs. Nutrient excess and deficiencies can both cause problems.
2. Second, you need a company that you can trust.
Evaluate your current food against these criteria to make sure that you are giving your dog the proper nutrition.
There are a number of excellent products in the market. If you are interest in improving the quality of what you feed your dog, take a look at Dr. Jane's formulas. Dr. Jane's formulas are called Life's Abundance and they have been in the market for many years.
Whatever you chose, it is vital that your dog eats a complete and balanced diet. Make sure you are feeding your dog the best you can possibly feed.

Help! My Cat Is Overweight?
What Should I Feed A Chubby Cat?
Dr Jane's Answer: Unfortunately, most weight reduction foods focus on weight loss but not on sound health. These foods are formulated to deliver a diet of low protein, low fat, low calories and high fiber. While one would think that cat owners would be content with the weight loss, if there is any, they generally discard the diet food because of the consequences: itching and scratching, dandruff, excessive shedding, dull brittle coats, insatiable hunger, changes in personality and overall lack in vitality. Since older cats are generally the victims of this food, one must be concerned about their already-frail immune systems. Unless your cat is extremely obese and/or under veterinarian orders to lose weight, the alternatives are: 1. Increase Daily Exercise 2. Feed a High Quality Food like Life's Abundance Health Food for Cats
Most owners of obese cats seek out a diet, light or senior food hoping that this will be the key to weight loss. Unfortunately, in most cases, a cat becomes obese simply because he is over fed. Since every nugget contains calories, some more then others, the key to a slim waist line for a kitty is to measure the amount of food being fed. Since every food contains different amounts of calories and is metabolized differently, one must follow the feeding directions for the selected food and then lower the amount if necessary. If the food is decreased by 25% and the kitty is not loosing any weight, then changing to a weight loss food may be necessary. A cat doesn't have to stay on that weight loss food forever. Once a waistline returns, the cat can be changed back to regular food. Measure out the food and don't free feed. Spread its allotted amount of food into two to three meals per day.

Life's Abundance Improved!
Important Email From Dr Jane Bicks
I've just had some pet parents ask me, "Why would you change your recipe, especially when you know how beneficial it these products already are?" And I say to them, it is my duty as veterinarian, a pet lover and a product formulator to do my very best for cats and dogs. And that includes making improvements to an already excellent formula, if I find evidence that the changes can really "up" the nutritional value of a food, treat or supplement. I can assure you that all of these upgrades are backed by good solid scientific research that I have investigated myself.
Please remember, every single ingredient in Life's Abundance is carefully selected. Everything that goes into our foods is included for a reason - to promote the health and well-being of companion animals. As a holistic veterinarian, I need to address all the needs of the body, judging the merits of ingredients by their impact on an animal's physiology, anatomy and biochemistry. As a product formulator, I create recipes that maximize the benefits so that we get the results we want - which always amounts to improving health states. You never have to worry that your lovely pet's food is being made by some anonymous formulator who only works with numbers, values and percentages.
With Life's Abundance Premium Health Food for Puppies and Adult Dogs, I have made some subtle but substantial enhancements, including
An Antioxidant System including vitamins A, C and E, as well as blueberries and pomegranates: studied for years, antioxidants are recommended by prominent health and medical organizations.
Oat Groats: this natural source of complex carbohydrates contains E and A oils, B vitamins, iron, zinc, copper and magnesium, while providing an excellent source of fiber.
A Proprietary Blend of Vitamins and Minerals: sourced from a unique mixture of vitamins and minerals, as well as fruits and vegetables, for a wide array of the nutrients that puppies and dogs need to thrive.
With Life's Abundance Premium Health Food for Kittens and Adult Cats, I have added
An Antioxidant System including vitamins A, C and E, as well as pomegranates: for the same reason listed above.
Dog Grass: helps supports a healthy urinary tract, which is vital for cats.
Alfalfa Sprouts: perhaps the richest in minerals of all grasses, this herb helps support healthy joints.
More Protein: we've increased the amount of the same high-quality animal source proteins - chicken, catfish, eggs, turkey and liver - for an excellent array of amino acids.
And, with Life's Abundance Weight-Loss Formula for Adult Dogs, I've added some of the great ingredients included in the above formula for dogs, including
An Antioxidant System including vitamins A, C and E, as well as blueberries and pomegranates.
A Proprietary Blend of Vitamins and Minerals.
And, just like before, all of Life's Abundance Premium Health Foods contain high-quality proteins, whole grains, Omega fatty acids, dietary fiber and direct-fed microbials (like those found in yogurt). The kibble size has not changed, and neither has the flavor. I am positive that you and your pet will continue to enjoy the same benefits as before.
A Life's Abundance diet means that your companion has a tremendous nutritional advantage, and it will always mean that, as long as I am here working to serve you and your family.
Thank you for caring enough to provide the best possible foods for your pet kids. Together, we're making the world a better place for our beloved dogs and cats.
Best wishes,
Dr. Jane Bicks

What Causes Urinary Tract Disease In Cats?
1. Cats need to drink more water. Studies have shown that cats simply don't drink enough water. I suggest that you give your cat fresh water in a ceramic dish rather than plastic or stainless steel. Cat fountains generally increase water intake because cats enjoy them. Since canned food provides water and nutrition I recommend feeding your cat canned food at least once daily. Instinctive Choice canned cat food provides excellent concentrated nutrition with a great taste. It includes an herb that holistic veterinarians recommend for a healthy urinary tract.
2. Cat food, dry or canned should produce a urinary pH of 6.6 - 6.8. Life's Abundance and Instinctive Choice produce the proper urinary pH for a healthy urinary tract.
3. Stress can cause FLUTD. Stressful events include moving, keeping the cat alone for longer times, or adding another pet or person to the family.
4. Allergies can cause FLUTD. Veterinarians find that some cats will have urinary tract issues the same time every year.
5. Ash, and magnesium levels are NO longer thought to be primary causes of FLUTD.

FDA Requests Seizure of Animal Food Products at PETCO Distribution Center
U.S. Marshals seized all FDA-regulated animal food susceptible to rodent and pest contamination. The seized products violate the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act because it was alleged in a case filed by the United States Attorney that they were being held under unsanitary conditions. (The Act uses the term "insanitary" to describe such conditions).
During an FDA inspection of a PETCO distribution center in April, widespread and active rodent and bird infestation was found. The FDA inspected the facility again in May and found continuing and widespread infestation.
"We simply will not allow a company to store foods under filthy and unsanitary conditions that occur as a direct result of the company's failure to adequately control and prevent pests in its facility," said Margaret O'K. Glavin, associate commissioner for regulatory affairs. "Consumers expect that such safeguards will be in place not only for human food, but for pet food as well."
The distribution center in Joliet, Ill., provides pet food products and supplies to PETCO retail stores in 16 states including Alabama, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, and Wisconsin.
FDA has no reports of pet illness or death associated with consumption of animal food distributed by PETCO, and does not have evidence that the food is unsafe for animals. However, the seized products were in permeable packages and held under conditions that could affect the food's integrity and quality.
As a precaution, consumers who have handled products originating from the PETCO distribution center should thoroughly wash their hands with hot water and soap. Any surfaces that came in contact with the packages should be washed as well. Consumers are further advised as a precaution to thoroughly wash products sold in cans and glass containers from PETCO in the 16 affected states.
If a pet has become ill after eating these food products, pet owners should contact their veterinarian and report illnesses to FDA state consumer complaint coordinators
Dr. Jane Bicks Tips for Washing Our Pets
Dr. Jane's Answer: Sure! Here are some great tips for washing our pets.
1. Don't wash your pet outside unless you've found a way to get warm water out there. Cold water is not as enjoyable to pets as it is to us.
2. Don't use the bathtub. It can hurt your back and it's hard for your pet to get a grip. Instead, use the shower or the laundry room sink. The bigger the sink, the better.
3. Put towels on the floor before washing, because the floor will get soaked and you may slip.
4. If you're in fact using the sink or shower, put a rubber mat in it.
5. Use treat-giving to teach your dog to stay in the sink and to behave properly. This may not work with a cat.
6. Use an eye ointment in your pet's eyes to protect them from the suds. If soap gets in the eyes, you can use a human eye rinse.
7. Make sure their coats get really wet, especially water breeds that are meant to repel water and those with thick coats. A nice wet coat also helps the shampoo to lather up more luxuriantly. Use a curry brush in a circular motion to work the shampoo and exfoliate the skin.
8. When washing, don't go above the neck to prevent the ear canal from becoming an actual ear canal. full of water. If you really want to wash the head, use a moist wash cloth only. Remember to wash under the tail, which is a widely forgotten area.
9. Avoid using a hair dryer, which can burn or irritate your pet. Use a towel for drying that is, after your pet does its instinctual, infamous water-shake.
10. Remember to take your time. Make sure you carve out meaningful time on a weekend to do this bonding activity with your pet. Have a radio on with some soothing music to calm both of you down, and talk gently. If you are erratic and rushing, your pet will feel it.
And One More Important HealthyPetNet Tip
When it comes to washing your pet, you shouldn't use baby shampoo or human shampoo. Different types of shampoos are formulated for specific skin types. Instead, you should use a shampoo formulated especially for dogs and cats, like HealthyPetNet Spa Scents Revitalizing Shampoo for dogs and cats.

Life's Abundance Gourmet Cat Treats For Healthy Skin & Coat
More terrific news everyone. Dr Jane announced that she has formulated a new gourmet cat treat, which replaces our Purrfectly Natural Gourmet Cat Treats. In addition to a new look, the improved treats are now under the Life's Abundance brand. If your cats enjoyed our old treats, they will absolutely love these new treats. Most cats spend a good portion of their waking hours grooming themselves and often loose hair is swallowed, which can lead to an accumulation in the stomach. Dr Jane believes that a healthy skin and a strong, resilient coat begin on the inside and that is why she formulated Life's Abundance Gourmet Cat Treats For Healthy Skin & Coat.
This new and improved treat addresses skin and coat health in different and important ways. Because healthy skin is much more likely to produce strong, luxurious hair, it is vital to nourish the skin. I included omega-3 fatty acids in this premium formula to help keep the skin moist and discourage it from drying out. The vitamin E in this formula helps to maintain skin elasticity. The vitamin C in this formula helps the body to produce collagen, which is the major component of skin. The chicken, herring and chicken liver meals in this formula supply your feline with the high-quality proteins vital for a healthy coat. Protein is necessary for the growth and maintenance of a strong, resilient coat. I believe that a stronger coat will result in less hair being swallowed during normal grooming.
Of course, the shape, size and savory flavor of these wonderful cat treats are the same, so your furry feline customers will never know that they are new and improved!
Life's Abundance Wellness Food Supplement For Cats
The smallest feline is a masterpiece". That's what Leonardo da Vinci once said and I couldn't agree more. That is why Dr Jane is so happy to announce that she formulated a new and improved supplement for cats called Life's Abundance Wellness Food Supplement, which replaces the Immune & Body Support we offered in the past. The more Dr Jane learns about the way bodies function, the more amazing they seem to her. There is a growing amount of anecdotal evidence that suggests a mammal's body has a highly complex, natural intelligence. As a holistic veterinarian, Dr Jane reviews such evidence, interpreting it within the context of established scientific knowledge. Based upon these observations, it seems that a cat's body "prefers" nutrients as they exist in foods, in their more natural state. On a cellular level, their bodies are familiar with the nutrient components and therefore the body knows to absorb and assimilate exactly what it needs. That is why Dr Jane believes that small amounts of nutrients in foods can have a profound affect on a cat's body. In light of this information, she formulated a new approach to add to the overall nutrient intake, creating Life's Abundance Wellness Food Supplement for Cats.
This new supplement is formulated with a wide variety of naturally-nutritious ingredients to help maintain overall health. The proteins in this superior supplement are sourced from high-quality chicken, herring, chicken liver, salmon and pork meals. We have also included chicken cartilage, a natural source of glucosamine and condroitin sulfate. This supplement also contains other nutritious ingredients such as alfalfa sprouts, tomato pomace and fish oil. And last but not least, even the most finicky of felines will enjoy the savory taste of these nutritious nuggets!
Because this new supplement is formulated differently, we can offer it to you at reduced prices. The new Retail price is $15.50 and the new Autoship price is $12.50. That's $3.15 a bottle less at Retail and $2.00 a bottle less on Autoship than the previous supplement!
Supplementing a cat's diet can play an important role in maintaining overall health, and I hope you will contact your cat customers so they can try this new and improved supplement.
