Life Savers - as American as Apple Pie!

Invented in 1912 (wow) by Clarence Crane, because he needed to boost candy sales. It seems summer was hard on the chocolate business (the whole heat / melting the chocolate thing).
Who knew the hard candy with the hole in the middle would become an American icon?
I think its pretty neat, because there's a lesson in there too - you never know when something so small will become something absolutely major and signifigant.

Why is there a hole in the middle?

It was the manufacturer's machines.

Mr. Crane had a pill manufacturer make the mints and their press worked better when the mints were stamped with a hole in the middle.

There's a lesson there, to go with the flow even when things might not seem to be going the way you had wanted. Things might just turn out really well! That's the whole reason the name Life Savers came about- the mints looked like little life preservers.

So go with the flow, you never know where it may lead you.

May I suggest the Butter Rum:

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

It might just be me, but Life Savers candy helps me maintain my weight. The little burst of flavor keeps me from indulging in bigger and more calorie / fat laden snacks.
Yep, the butter rum ones are really good.

With all the new-fangled candies falling off store shelves these days, I almost forgot about LIFESAVERS! Save for when those Xmas gift packages (the ones that look like books?), I hardly see Lifesaver candies anymore. Nice reminder, thx.
