The Freedom to Marry
LGBT Human Rights
Normally, I would write about literature, or literature-related fields; however, I feel strongly moved to speak out on the issue of the legalization of gay marriage that is circulating throughout various states in the USA right now. The issue of gay marriage in itself is ridiculous. It should not be an issue at all. Marriage is not a holy RIGHT. It is a CIVIL right according to the United States constitution; therefore, it should not be subject to religious judgment under the law. The separation of church and state provides freedom from religious bounds and persecution. As such, our governments (state governments as well as our federal government) are supposed to, by law, operate outside the realm, rules, and logic of religion; however, religion has been the foremost argument and tool used to ban gay marriage. Again, according to our national constitution, the people of the United States of America have freedom of religion, and to bind our laws to any form of religious morals or laws under God is a direct violation of the first amendment. The freedom to marry would not and does not infringe upon another person's religious freedom; however, the government is allowing a person's religious freedom to infringe upon other people's freedom to marry. It is unconstitutional and inhumane to continue with this denial of human and civil rights to the LGBT community. Tradition is no excuse for prejudice, discrimination, or persecution, and falling back on tradition can often times be dangerous and very harmful. It is time that the United States evolve with the times, and do as the American citizens have been promised according to the national constitution as well as the Declaration of Independence. It is not an issue of "gay marriage." It is an issue of marriage, and marriage is for everyone. Make it so.

Equality
There have been many argued points against gay marriage and against Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender relationships in general. This is absolutely unacceptable. All walks of life, all people deserve justice, basic human and civil rights, EQUALITY, and liberty. It is written in the Declaration of Independence. ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL. The word "all" is encompassing of every person on this earth. It does not carry a footnote to exclude the unfamiliar, or the diverse. It does not exclude people of varying religions. It does not exclude the unreligious. It does not exclude any race or ethnicity or nationality. It does not exclude any sexual orientation. The word "all" does NOT discriminate, and our government should not discriminate either. Which side of the debate do you fall on?
Tell us why!
Do you think gay marriage should be legalized everywhere?

Yes-it is a basic human and civil right!
tifebrown says:
Absolutely! I don't know what give anyone the right to tell someone whether they can or can't be married. If I see two people of the same sex holding hands: a)It has no negative impact on my life or anyone else's. b) It makes no difference in my life if they are or are not wearing wedding bands. Love knows no bounds.
poddys says:
When two people love each other, they ought to have the same rights regardless of whether they are both the same sex or not.
JoshK47 says:
Definitely - who exactly is it hurting?
Paige Patterson says:
I do think gay marriage should be legalized everywhere. Why is it not ok for everyone to have the chance to be happy and enjoy their life no matter what sexual orientation you are? It shouldn't matter!
ShellysLGBT says:
Yes. My wife (legally is several states and the District of Columbia but not in my state) and I deserve all the same rights as all the other families in our neighborhood. Other than the fact that we're two women, we're absolutely no different. We work, we're raising a child, we do lawn maintenance and home care...NO DIFFERENT. Why is religion dictating to government when this country was founded on religious freedom and believes in the separation of church and state?
DinaDLG says:
Yes, why not? Separation of Church and State renders using the Bible as a source for the definition of 'marriage' is something that should not be done, right?
Ricardoricardo says:
No doubt in my mind gay people should have the right to marriage.
wheresthekarma says:
Yes of course. I dont know how this can even be an issue, but being the mom of a gay son I know it is sadly. I hope the world changes and accepts everyone soon. God loves everyone and so should we. We were all created from the same universe, its silly to pick and choose who we should accept and who we shouldnt. Everyone deserves the same rights.
No-Marriage is between a man and woman only.
projectrehab says:
It unnatural.

Morals, Beliefs, and Values are NOT Weapons!
It is well within the rights of people to disapprove of homosexuality and of gay marriage. According to many people, it is in direct opposition with their faith and morals, and that is perfectly okay. Those people have the right to feel a certain way, and to believe a certain way. However, it is not acceptable under any circumstances, in any way, to use personal religious beliefs and personal morals as a tool or weapon to lead a war against any person or group of persons that does not fall in line with any specific person's religious or personal guidelines and beliefs. It is not acceptable to use religion and morals as a tool to deny human beings their basic human and civil rights guaranteed them by the Constitution of the United States of America, and it is NOT acceptable for the federal government to allow this to continue. Did YOU know?!
LGBT History Facts
The SANCTITY of Marriage
As I stated before, the most prominent argument against gay marriage is based in religion, as many claim that it is a holy union and a holy right afforded only to heterosexual couples. Based on this argument, many have continued to say that in violating this holiness by allowing LGBT members of varying communities to be legally married would further ruin the SANCTITY of marriage. However, heterosexual couples have managed on their own to ruin the so-called sanctity of marriage given that 50% of all first marriages, 67% of all second marriages, and 74% of all third marriages end in divorce (Forest Institute of Professional Psychology). It appears the sanctity of marriage only withstands as long as two people are happy, or until someone else comes along. It is not for me to judge whether or not divorce is justified, as it may well be in many cases, but just as well, it is not for religious activitists and extremist conservatives to decide who should and should not be allowed to legally marry based on such a ridiculous notion as the "holy" or "sacred", "sanctity" of marriage, as I have just pointed out that this argument plummeted to the floor when heterosexual couples made it just as common to get divorced as it is to get married in the first place. Religion VS Law
Law Evolves, Religion Resists

I am not against religion. I, myself, am a religious person. However, I do recognize the fact that religion and law cannot operate hand-in-hand. Allowing religion to dictate, or even affect, the government's decisions or ability to make decisions regarding the basic rights of the American people, openly displays the downward spiral in which our country is headed if this continues. The Bible has been used as a tool to persuade law for many years, and yet people continue to blindly act out of Biblical ignorance. How is it that people have yet to wake up and realize how this so-called "holy and sacred" text has been warped and used as a weapon by mankind for years? The Bible was used as a standing point to justify slavery and the killing of African Americans. It was used as a standing point to justify segregation. It was used a standing point to justify the silencing of women and the denial of women's rights. It was used as a standing point to persecute alternative religions. It was used for centuries to convince the world that the earth was not round, but was flat, and regarding this, it was used to persecute and permanently imprison Galileo for arguing otherwise. He died, a captive in his own home, for nothing more than claiming that the earth was round. It was nearly 400 years later before religious heads admitted that they were wrong, and yet Galileo was gone. He could not and will never get his life back, and lost it for merely daring to think that perhaps the Bible had been interpreted incorrectly.
What Do You Think?
Religion Vs. Law
The Bible Says
The Hypocrisy of Verse as an Argument
The Bible claims many things an abomination that the majority of Americans practice everyday, including many, MANY people of religious faith, even those who use the Bible to condemn others (eating shellfish, women dressing as men-yes, this means wearing pants and men who dress as women, liars, adulterers, the sacrifice of the wicked, the devising of folly, unequal weights and measures, arrogance, incense, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, envy, drunkenness, orgies, pride, being naked in front of family members or seeing your parents naked, among several others.) These are common practice all over the United States, including by many of the religious community who pick and choose which sins to focus on when they want to condemn others or strip people of their basic human rights. The Bible also commands that we put one another to death should be come upon each other committing various sins, including some of the previous listed. However, many religious American citizens are not out throwing stones as their God would have them do. The Bible also commands that we should sell our daughters into slavery, though that is overlooked by many. If religious activists are going to put their hands on the Bible and use it as a weapon, they must be prepared to live by what they preach; otherwise, this argument is invalid and should be silenced immediately. Fighting For Years
It is absolutely unacceptable to force LGBT citizens to suffer in waiting and hoping and praying while a civil right, which should be undisputably guaranteed, is battled out in court. LGBT citizens have to wait to attain their rights through litigation, which could take and is taking years. Some people do not have years. Some do not have months. All that the LGBT community is asking for is their basic human and civil rights-the right to be legally married; the right to all the same benefits of marriage provided to married heterosexual couples. LGBT citizens have a right to take care of their families through the same benefits afforded heterosexuals. It is ridiculous to see this struggle continuing, just beginning really when LGBT Americans have been openly fighting for their basic human and civil rights under the law since the sixties. eBay
What's hot on topic!
Your Choice, My Choice

Abortion is legal in every state, though legalized through litigation; it is a national law. It is not subject to state dictation or to a public vote of the people. At the same time, abortion is also in direct opposition with many religious beliefs and laws, as well as personal morals. I, myself, do not personally agree with abortion; however, I do support a person's right to choose. If that is the path they have chosen, then that is their right granted them by the United States government. It is also in no way any of my business. Another woman's abortion in no way alters my life or affects my decisions. It is that woman's choice. In the same way, two men or two women who want to be legally married should be entitled to that choice. It in no way alters my life or anyone else's life. It does not alter my decisions for myself or my family, nor does it have this affect on anyone else. It does not change my religious viewpoints, beliefs, or personal morals, nor does it affect anyone else in this way. So, why fight against it? What is the point? To reject our own fellow citizens? To make people feel unwelcome in their home country or their home state? To point and say you are different and as such, you do not deserve rights? All of these are petty desires based in petty and outdated fears. Immigrants can be legally married in the United States, and yet natives of the country cannot if they are gay or lesbian. Those fighting against gay rights are harming their own in ways from which many will never recover, and as such, many will take their own lives. Simulatenously, many LGBT people are being killed all over the country by religious bigots and extremists, and yet no one opens their eyes.

Same-sex Couples Can NOT Produce Children!
The Issue of Procreation
Another major argument against same-sex marriage is based on the issue of procreation. It is argued that same-sex marriages should not be made legal because marriage is for procreation, and same-sex couples cannot procreate; however, marriage is a legal right afforded to heterosexual couples who are infertile, heterosexual couples who conceive artificially (the same as many homosexual couples who are not legally allowed to marry), heterosexual couples who are unable to reproduce due to age, and heterosexual couples who are related as closely as being first cousins whose children carry a greater risk of mental handicap and genetic mutation/disability. (Not to mention all the heterosexuals having children outside of wedlock and due to drunken one-night-stands, etc.) It almost seems this argument is one made out of sheer desperation to deny a minority their rights, seeing as how so many heterosexual couples who fit into the category of being unable to reproduce are afforded the right to legally marry. Some even go a step further and say that due to same-sex couples' inability to procreate, the legalization of same-sex marriage is a hazard to the continuation and survival of the human race. Again, this is reaching, and here's how:1. HOMOSEXUALITY IS NOT CONTAGIOUS. Allowing same-sex couples to legally marry will not suddenly cause heterosexual couples to turn gay. People will not be turning gay in order to be legally married, because homosexuals are the only consenting human adult couples that are exempt from the right to marry. Everyone else already has this right!
2. BANNING SAME-SEX MARRIAGE WILL NOT CHANGE HOMOSEXUALITY. The gays will still be gays. If marriage is denied to same-sex couples, they will not give up and be heterosexual just for the right to marry. So, how exactly will allowing them to enter into a legal contract with one another lead to the extinction of the human race? It is a title and benefits, and even without them, homosexuality exists. If domestic partnerships and civil unions aren't going to end human life as we know it, then I think marriage is safe.

The Most Important Thing
What is your prediction?
How many years from now will it take for same-sex marriage to become legal in all 50 states?
Whether it is legalized individually in each state or if it is legalized nationally through litigation, same-sex marriage is quickly become a reality through the U.S, and many are predicting it won't be long before same-sex couples nationwide are afforded the right. What do you think? 5-10 years? 10-20? Or do you think same-sex marriage will never be legal nationally?

Chrmdpoet predicts:
5-10 years

tifebrown predicts:
It is unfortunate that it isn't already legal. I say realistically... 10-20 years before all states allow gay marriage. I just have to say, it's good to be Canadian!
poddys predicts:
I doubt it will ever happen. Too many religious fanatics around.
justonebook predicts:
5 years. Fingers crossed!
Paige Patterson predicts:
I hope 5-10 years if we are lucky.
DinaDLG predicts:
5 - 10 years. They are starting to get their crap together now, plus all the older rule makers who are against it will retire or die in that time.
dannystaple predicts:
5-10 years unless there are more setbacks by religious right organisations and governments gaining power. The US is in danger of putting itself far behind other nations in this regard because of how far right its politics is swinging. Heil Palin and the Tea Party Reich (anyone got a little Chaplin Tache for her yet?)

- Great lens! I can't understand how or why some people are so narrow-minded and so threatened by the idea of gay marriage. Consenting adults should have the right to marry whomever they choose. Legally binding together two loving adults doesn't hurt anyone. How can committed love be wrong?

- This was awesome! One of the best lenses I have seen so far. It is a shame that there is so much ignorance in the world. My best friend and his boyfriend (well I guess fiance now) are getting married next year, and I really couldn't imagine two individuals better suited to be married. Keep on educating the ignorant, you're doing a great job!

- Well I am not gay, but I don't think that we ought to deprive anyone of the right to happiness and to show their love for their partner. Whether this means the ability to commit to each other in a marriage ceremony, or tax laws that benefit married couples, things ought to be equal for everyone.

- I'm straight but I think this lens is spot on. I have only one objection to different forms of marriage; I don't think there should be a tax benefit or disadvantage for any couple, whether in a traditional marriage, a gay marriage, or two people just living together. That aside, you have as much right to personal freedoms and to be happy as the rest of us. IMO far right-wing christians aren't.

- You can probably do a bit more to get rid of the default module titles, like "New Guestbook" etc, but this lens has come a HUGE way from where I first saw it. A really good improvement. I've started changing the TOC styles to the compact version (and may need to update my TOC style lens on this), you might do so too, so the content isn't dominated by the TOC. Good use of pictures, polls and other modules. The history part is also great. This lens is worth a blessing - thoughtful and you've spent time getting the style good.

- it seems such a simple issue when you strip it down to "All men are created equal." " The word "all" does NOT discriminate, and our government should not discriminate either." well said. if that's the premise we're standing on in this country, how can anyone argue against granting everyone the equal rights with which they were born?
