This Tasty Treat is a No Guilt Eat.
Of all the pies that I have gone through and made healthier (often reducing the calories from 500 down to 150 or so) this one was one of the more difficult!
I think the reason for the difficulty was in the name. You see, it has "caramel" in the title. Oh dear.
Let's see how I did.
Caramel Apple Pie Ingredients
The enemies.
1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
2 tablespoons sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cut into 1/2-inch pieces, frozen
4 tablespoons (about) ice water
Streusel:
3/4 cup all purpose flour
6 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
1/4 teaspoon salt
6 tablespoons (3/4 stick) chilled unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
Filling:
3 pounds Golden Delicious apples (about 8), peeled, cored, cut into 3/4-inch-thick wedges
1/4 cup all purpose flour
1 1/4 cups sugar
1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons water
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
You see, not only is it caramel based, but it also has a perfect, crunchy streusel on top!
