When was the last time you saw fireflies or lightning bugs? Who were you with and what did you do?

Evelyn, you're such a Squidoo superstar! 9 out of the 10 times I click on a great lesson lens, it's made my YOU! I can't wait to teach next year and use your resources. I featured this lens on "The Best Summer Learning Activities and Projects by Subject" for parents to help their kids keep learning during the break. :)
  • poissonenciel Apr 4, 2012 @ 11:04 am | delete
I saw them last time may be 30 years ago... Nice lens, thank you
  • DebMartin Apr 3, 2012 @ 10:58 am | delete
A great lens that took me back to my childhood. The woods near my N. Ontario camp is full of them. Some nights, on a damp night, with an electrical storm in the background and a million fireflies in the woods the magic is overwhelming. d

As a southerner, I can't imagine NOT seeing lightening bugs in the yard, the woods, the fields... Shoot. They're even in the suburbs. ;-)

I've never seen a firefly, but would like to.
  • Cinnamonbite Oct 5, 2011 @ 9:56 am | delete
I miss fireflies. We hardly have them in Florida.

Nice job. I was searching for information as we have these every night here in Maine. Good info
  • Heather426 Aug 13, 2011 @ 3:00 pm | delete
Love fireflies, love the lens. I haven't seen a firefly in a very long time as I don't think we have them here in California, but we used to catch them in Texas all the time.
  • stargazer00 Aug 11, 2011 @ 10:36 pm | delete
This Iowa girl misses lightning bugs now that she lives on the west coast.
  • Light-in-me Aug 11, 2011 @ 9:49 pm | delete
We called them lightening bugs when I was a child also. I used to love catching them or just sitiing there watching them.
    Nice job, great info here.
    Robin :)
  • efriedman Jul 17, 2011 @ 4:28 pm | delete
In east Texas there were lots of fireflies (we called them lightening bugs) but they are on the decline I hear. Out west (California) we don't have fireflies. I miss them. I loved the pretty, small green ones I saw in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

I saw a firefly last week. It was all dark, and I could see see a glow in our garden. I tried to go near the bug and it just went off! Never saw it again.

  • darciefrench Jun 22, 2011 @ 10:45 pm | delete
You know... I have never seen a firefly in real life! Is that odd? Love this lens, your teaching lenses are priceless. Such a fun way to learn. Many thanks for all the hard work you put into your pages. Just lovely.

Evelyn, another fun lens on a great topic. I love fireflies and no doubt so do the children who will be taught with this material.
  • Ruthi May 12, 2011 @ 12:50 pm | delete
Love this lens and it brought back fond memories of lightning bugs all summer long! Have you seen that commercial on TV where the gal and her grandson walk up the hill in the twilight and release the fireflies into the night and they all fly up and mingle with the twinkling stars? I can't recall the product...
  • akumar46 May 12, 2011 @ 12:20 pm | delete

I haven't seen fireflies in years since we moved out of the country. I do miss those bright little creatures, and wish I could share the experience with my kids. Cheers for another fantastic lesson and lens! Thanks!
  • kiwisoutback Mar 26, 2011 @ 9:21 am | delete
This was one of my favorite summer night activities - only caught one once though. Maybe that's a northeast thing, to call them lightning bugs (I always called them that as opposed to fireflies). I haven't seen many as of late, so the population must be way down. Hm, now that I think of it, I haven't seen one in at least 10 years.
  • Heather426 Mar 17, 2011 @ 1:04 am | delete
another amazing lens! I love lightening bugs, although we called them fireflies:)

  • sheilamarie Nov 18, 2010 @ 5:30 pm | delete
I don't remember about the last time, but I remember the first time my husband saw one. He is a westerner and honestly thought fireflies were a myth, like fairies and unicorns. I was amazed at his amazement!
  • Brookelorren Sep 9, 2010 @ 1:23 am | delete
I'm not sure if I've ever seen one. Except for in The Princess and the Frog. I guess I've never lived where they live.
  • KathyMcGraw Sep 8, 2010 @ 10:59 am | delete
Having never seen a firefly this was pretty interesting....including the concept of reading by flashlight for little ones...I can picture that more than I can real fireflys :)
  • dagsmith Jun 20, 2010 @ 7:58 pm | delete
Simply awesome lens. Now I can go back outside and answer most of my daughters questions!
  • LoKackl May 23, 2010 @ 1:15 pm | delete
Fireflies seem to me one of the last untarnishable (if that's a word!) delights of childhood. Congratulations on your Purple Star!

Ah, yes -- we called this little critters lightning bugs or lightening bugs and heaven knows that I surely caught more than my share in those old mason jars. Thanks for bringing back some de-light-ful memories my dear. I sure do hope you have a remarkable journey this year. Happy new year and hugeroonies!

Oh, how sad! I felt the same way in Costa Rica. They fly around in such abundance in Vermont that it's hard to imagine that they don't live everywhere.
  • Joan4 Aug 12, 2009 @ 8:09 am | delete
Wow! Some of my earliest memories involve catching lightening bugs! And now I love watching my grandchildren chase them across the yard in the early evening! What a beautiful simple treasure!

Its always cool to see fireflies somewhere. My online persona is Firefly although I sometimes go as FireflyAfrica when Firefly is taken. I have a passion for photography and travel & tourism and have a travel and nature photographic blog called The Firefly Photo Files (http://fireflyafrica.blogspot.com).
    Super site. Well done.

Thanks for another great lens! I've missed fireflies very much this year, since we've moved to town and they seem to be absent here. Great work.

  • Tipi Jun 23, 2009 @ 11:36 am | delete
Wonderful memories as a child catching the lightening bugs. That use to be so much fun!
We don't have them here in Fargo for some reason. I once transported a bunch of them from northern Minnesota and released them hopping to see more of them in this area, but no! Some experiments fail! - Cool lens!

Good lens. I have never seen these in the Uk, perhaps they are just not native here. By the way - "Pole" should be "poll".
I will have to remember some of these ideas for activities with kids.

    A very enlightening lens. :D

One tip (from my eldest daughter) for those who catch lightning bugs: Don't catch them and release them inside your tent to make cool little nightlights or you will have little insects crawling over you all night!
  • ElizabethJeanAllen Oct 1, 2008 @ 6:59 pm | delete
Growing up in rural Minnesota, catching fireflies was a given. As an adult, I'd rather watch them dance across the yard and through the trees.
    Great lens.

We used to try to catch enough to put them by our beds at night so we could read after lights out! lol

BTW, I hope you are writing children's books. If not you should be.

I have only seen fireflies once. My husband and I were invited out to the country to a co-workers house for dinner and when we left later in the evening there was a field at the end of their road that had hundreds of them. We sat there for about fifteen minutes watching them move through the field. It was the most beautiful thing. I just couldn't believe it.
