Lighthouses in History, Art & Craft

Lighthouses!  Living in Michigan, I've seen lighthouses  all around the Great Lakes all my life.    The Great Lakes have LOTS of Lighthouses, perhaps more per square mile than anywhere else. But since America has LOTS of coastline, there are a huge number of beloved lighthouses three sides of the US.

As it is for other people, its a sadness in my soul that they've changed so much, even become irrelevant to navigation.

When its dark on dangerous and cold waters, the presence of a lonely and cold lighthouse makes one feel like they have company, a reference point, something comforting in dark places.

Lighthouses are beacons- a symbol of hope in dark and dangerous times. They are romantic, life-sustaining, beautiful, private. There are few other architectural buildings that bring out so much of the depth of our souls!

Beautiful Lighthouses

Nasa: Pigeon Point Lighthouse
Explanation: This spectacular sky is mostly human-made. Once a year, the Light Station at Pigeon Point near San Francisco, California, USA is lit as it was over 100 years ago. During this time, light generated by five kerosene lamps pours through 24 rotating Fresnel lenses, warning approaching ships to stay away. Early last week, light emanating from the Pigeon Point Lighthouse was particularly picturesque because of a thin fog, also blurring the distant Moon. During the latter 1970s, the lighthouse was guarded by an 800 pound pig named Lester. In modern times, the light house is still active but has been supplied with a more efficient flashing aerobeacon.

Some lighthouses ARE lengendary, for reasons of safety, for reasons of beauty, for reasons of history, for reasons of ... hauntings?

This is a wonderful set to show off ALL the most legendary of lighthouses, a gorgeous family trip right at home.

The Haunted Presque Isle Lighthouse

To this very day...

This lighthouse, built in the 1800's, had a couple who lived there. The poor wife actually went insane- who knows why, and was therefore locked up in the tower. It had the old style yellow light, which worked only for 31 years, before being replaced. During this time, the madwoman died. Her screams can still be heard, particularly during bad, cold weather and windy nights.

By the early 1900's the lighthouse was sold to a private party, and thereafter turned into a museum. In the 1990's, George and Lorraine Parris moved into the lighthouse keeper's cottage as caretakers. Since there was no longer a need for the building to serve as a lighthouse proper, the electricity was disconnected from the lighthouse. Some years later, George died of a heart attack and Lorraine left the property for a while. She was convinced to return to the caretaking duties, but while approaching the compound, saw the lighthouse glowing yellow, as would the old, original light. Since it was impossible, she kept the repeated sightings of the yellow light to herself, until the Coast Guard reported it too, and came to investigate. Coast Guard officials even removed the lamp entirely, yet the light continues to shine.

One young visitor reported seeing a man there, and when shown a picture of George, said it was him, only a brighter white! Other visitors have reported someone brushing their shoulder with a hand, while there is no one there that they can see!

To this day, the yellow light comes on at dusk, and goes off at dawn. The Coast Guard classifies it as an 'unknown light.'

Everywhere, on the water, the beacon home!

Every country that has borders on the water has an inheritance of lighthouses.
France Sees Its Heritage in Its Crumbling Lighthouses
It was a Frenchman, after all, Augustin-Jean Fresnel, who invented a crystal lens for lighthouses, and another who thought to rest the turning lamps on a pool of mercury, which conducts electricity and moves with the earth.

About Margaret_Schaut

Squidoo is so addicting, I can't stop! A 'retired' and this month a 'returning' Citizen Squids, blogger and group master, I've enjoyed this special site so much!

I qualified as one of the top 100 Club Giant Squids, and have 4 pages that were honored with Lens of the Day

Michelangelo's David is one of a very few pages that has achieved #1 Lensrank!! NumberOneLensrankBadgeWorldClassMasterpieceBadge#1 Topic Badge

Other matters: I was honored to give a speech at the Vietnam Veterans Moving Wall Memorial, which you can see on Eccentricity at the bottom of the page, above the guestbook (if you want to see what I look and sound like in high winds and from the side...

I have started a new squidoo-helps for small business owners blog Squidoo Web Companions blog

A personal blog Margaret Schaut blog which is guaranteed to annoy at least some of the people all of the time!

I travel and as I am able to, share the information I have researched and learned about those things, most notably Michelangelo's David statue so far, nominated for Lens of the Year in both 2006 & 2007! It also finally achieved #1 Lensrank- one of only a VERY FEW lenses that have done so.

Finally, I can't have a general bio that doesn't mention my beloved bulldog, Thor.  He has a couple of his own pages, here and elsewhere, and his own blog.  If you would like to have an enjoyable few moments,  check out his hilarious page The Thoracle.
