Lighthouses -- Great Travel Destinations
Walking to the top of a lighthouse is usually pretty interesting because of the winding, cramped stairs. Then once you've made it to the top, checking out the view across the water and the enormous lamp is another adventure.

History of Lighthouses
A brief look at these unique buildings
Lighthouses serve as beacons to ships along coastal waters. Early lighthouses used lamps with wicks as the light source.An early lighthouse was the Lighthouse of Alexandria (coloring page below) built in the third century BC. This lighthouse stood for 1,500 years but was damaged by earthquakes. Remnants of the lighthouse can be seen by diving in Alexandria's harbor.
The first lighthouse built in the U.S. was the Boston Harbor Lighthouse in 1716. The longest operating U.S. lighthouse on the west coast is Point Pinos Light near Pacific Grove, California.

The Statue of Liberty Lighthouse
Yes, she was once a lighthouse.
According to the Hudson Lights, the Statue of Liberty originally was used as a beacon to the New York Harbor when it was opened in 1886. The U.S. Light-House Board was the lighthouse's caretaker.
The lights in the statue were never sufficient to give off enough light so the Statue of Liberty ceased being used as a lighthouse in 1902.
